I like that trade off. If you have to catch an opponent with extended prep, its better to be an NFC opponent. And it’s nice to catch an AFC opponent after a bye as well. -

AJ Green to Jets Trade rumor chatter on Twitter

I’d rather them get Greene and the 11th pick than a stud, franchise level defender with the 3rd overall pick. -
He also plays Aberama Gold in ‘Peaky Blinders’.

Are you under the impression that I somehow don’t like Metcalf as a prospect? Well, I do. What i don’t agree with are the comparisons to Calvin Johnson and the suggestion that Johnson was somehow limited in his route running ability so we shouldn’t be concerned about that in Metcalf. Other than size and speed, there are no comparisons to Johnson coming out of college.

Nice, but it says 2015 route percentages. That’s not his career. And again, I don’t blame the Lions for having him run nines to clear out coverages. But that’s not the same as saying he COULDN’T run quick cut routes and, as I’ve said, it was his complete route running versatility that made the nines that much more effective, not just his speed and size. I actually just read an article from a Lions insider in 2008 that says one of the reasons Marinelli fired Martz and went to Jim Colletto was because he wanted to use Johnson more on shorter passes vs. so many long routes in order to get the ball in his hands quicker to make plays. It would be good to see a route breakdown like the one above from when Colleto called the plays.

Did you miss the part about creating separation on short and intermediate routes as a “speed cut” runner? If you don’t think running short and intermediate quick routes, IN ADDITION TO running 9s, doesn’t mean the bulk of route tree, then you’re just being obtuse and it’s not worth the discussion. I like Metcalf as a prospect, but he’s no Calvin Johnson coming out. However, if you want to find me a scouting report that ALSO mentions Metcalf’s ability to run quick cut routes in addition to goes and slants, I’d be happy to read it.

It’s not about what the Lions asked him to do, it’s about what he was capable of doing. He ran a ton of go routes because it complicated things for the defense and made it easier on other offensive players. That’s a good strategy and I could see Metcalf fulfilling a similar role. But one of the reasons his nine routes were so effective is because defenses had to respect his ability on digs and other quick cut routes as well. I just read Brook’s scouting report on Johnson coming out and he mentions his route versatility. There’s a reason Johnson was the number two overall pick (some projected him number one overall) and it wasn’t because he was a limited wideout. He demonstrated his versatility throughout his college career and won the Biletnikof as a result. This takes nothing away from Metcalf., who’s a fine prospect in his own right. But these comparisons to Johnson are simply out of line. It’s like people have to convince themselves about Metcalf by diminishing Johnson somehow.
