Not from the Sabres. I’d do it if I were another team, though. Why not? He’s an elite player. But I suspect he will re-sign with the Leafs on a deal structured like Matthews’s. Gonna take a lot more than Risto, but that’s a starting point. Hall entering free agency is risky, but I’d still take the chance a la Skinner. I can’t recall if we were in discussions with the Oilers before they traded Hall to New Jersey.

Greatest Musical Composers in Rock/Pop/Country/etc

Whether we like his compositions or not, doesn’t deter from the sheer complexity of some of the works he’s composed for symphony orchestration. All the great classical composers had a clunker or two here and there, too. Their contemporary audiences were just as finicky as we are today. -

I’m sorry, but I can’t tip my hat to Patricia for stopping Allen from running wild on them. 99% of Allen’s rushing yardage during his three game hot rushing streak were from breaking pocket containment and taking off at the drop of a hat as the pocket collapsed around him. Football 101 says maintain your rush discipline and keep a good running QB in the pocket, so Patricia gets no points from me for on that score. And giving him credit for that like it was something extraordinary is absurd. Allen certainly burned him from the pocket when it mattered though. Was the difference in the game as it turned out. -
Good stuff. Thanks for posting. Can’t wait until Allen and the offense routinely read what the defense is giving them because once they do that, they can start taking what they want more regularly.

Agree entirely. But while Williams is a modern composer, I don’t put him in the pop category as mentioned in the op. -

I think it’s because every ex-Patriot*** coach who worked under Belichick has gone on to great success as a head coach. When the push back about Patricia “bringing it”against us last season turns into he meant bringing it defensively, well, that is not true, either. Sure, it was a defensive battle, but ours was every bit as good that day. And I guess Patricia didn’t “bring it” when it mattered most in the 4th quarter when Allen torched him with a 42 yarder to Foster. I’m sure that made Belichick proud. -
Any relation to this guy:

I don’t think so as I’d agree that Joel’s or perhaps another pop composer of a single composition might, might, compare favorably to a short, piano solo composition like Fur Elise. There’s just not much to it in terms of notation and pages needed. I’m referring to a classical composer of music for full symphony orchestration. Even if it’s a shorter symphony of say 20 minutes, every piece in the orchestra is notated, upwards of 100 in most full symphony orchestras. Then there’s the behemoths of classical compositions like Mahler, of over 90 minutes. Again, with every piece separately notated. If there are pop composers doing that kind of stuff today, I’m willing to give them a listen. I just haven’t heard that level of complexity in pop music to this point. That’s not selection bias, it’s lack of experience. -

As I said, I don’t think modern pop compositions aren’t often complex as compared to each other, but they simply do not possess the level complexity of a composition written by the great classical composers for full symphony orchestration. And I certainly don’t think the great pop composers of today are bad. Quite the contrary. But the OP postulated the idea of whether or not today’s popular composers in rock, c&w, etc., could be in the ranks of the likes of Beethoven or other great classical composers. I’ve yet to hear anything that would qualify. As good as it may be or as superior as it may be in its genre. -

More power to them as I don’t think it detracts from their musical genius or the mastery they achieved playing instruments or singing. Some great musicians invented their own forms of notation as well, so I just can’t hold a lack of formal musical training against them, either. But classical composing is just a different animal entirely vs. pop music constructs, even though some pop pieces are far more complex than others in their own right. But it’s like comparing a Renaissance art work to a paint by numbers. -

I mean no disrespect to modern age pop music composers, but let’s face it, they aren’t composing pieces with anywhere near the complexity of classical composers. It’s night and day. So no, none of them should even be considered in that realm. Relative to each other, yes, there are better ones than the other. -

I disagree it’s a 4th year for the administration. For the Pegulas, certainly. For Mc Beane and the vast staff tneh assembled in football ops, it’s year 3 coming up. Regarding the patience of the Pegulas, I agree. But unless it’s an absolute train wreck with regression everywhere and not just in the win column, accompanied by the childish infighting and bickering we saw when their first coaching hire went south, my hunch is they will get more time. Hopefully, it’s a moot point come season’s end, but we are a team still in transition with a ton of new moving parts that need to coalesce on and off the field, so I expect some bumps in the road along the way. Edit: got my thoughts crossed on the Pegulas and McBeane. -

So it’s all about no regression in the win column without extenuating circumstances then. As a fan, I can respect that. As someone who realizes football administrations don’t think like fans, I think McBeane get a 3rd year, regardless. -

This is year two and, again, if there is a gross regression from year one, it will depend on the nature of the regression. You and others have previously and fairly pointed out that extenuating circumstances like injury, etc., would add a context to consider in the discussion. But imo, McBeane get more than two years, regardless. This roster, while improved on paper with an infusion of free agents and promising rookie draft picks, is still a work in progress and not complete. There can be marked improvement that doesn’t necessarily manifest in wins, too. And while wins are certainly the ultimate yardstick, I can see ownership not clearing house after year two if they are satisfied that they are on the right track. Me, you, and the fan base may not appreciate that, but I can see a front office and football administration buying into that. Kind of like ‘87 and year 2 of the Kelly era, when they finished under .500 but were clearly on the rise. -

Depends on the nature of the regression. If a new regime inherits an already maxed out roster, especially at QB, and determines that 9 wins is the absolute ceiling before that maxed out roster declines, it’s understandable why they would seek a new start and go in another direction. Again, especially at QB. Shorter term pain, for longer term gain. And if the new regime can convince ownership that’s their best current option, more time and patience may be allotted. That said, a drastic regression in performance and wins without legitimate reasons for either, would certainly be open to new analysis. -

And that 3rd rounder acquired for TT was used to trade up with Baltimore to get Edmunds. The TT trade helped us enormously. -

I hear ya, but the key word is “results.” Had EJ developed and Sammy became an All Pro, we wouldn’t be saying he gave away the store. Oh, there might be a few stragglers clinging to the idea that Whaley gave up too much, just as there were after Bennett became a star back in the day. But I submit we’d all be pretty happy if it worked out.
