Marquez Valdes-Scantling meeting with the Bills (UPDATE: Signed)
NewEra replied to HappyDays's topic in The Stadium Wall
It was astonishingly bad defense. And again- We were missing our two stud Lbs that were the pulse for our defense to start the season. our mlb and player that gave up 2 TDs, was on the couch every Sunday a month prior. We were missing both of our starting corners and Douglas had an injured knee. Our biggest investment on D (von) was useless. Our biggest offseason acquisition (floyd) played 38% of the snaps after having already run out of gas in week 11. Our 2 best DL (Rousseau and Oliver) got dominated in their one on ones. our starting safeties - 1 signed for 2M. The might be retired. But yeah- Stop Mahomes and Kelce. More importantly, stop them with AJ Klein covering Kelce. -

Right, in games where we had no defensive lines and no pass rush. He needed more pass rush talent because Beane invested in the wrong guys. (Murphy, star, Addison, butler). We had one starting caliber DL, Jerry. You know this. We all know you know this. We’ve all read your posts stating how Beanes poor allocation of resources into our DL has cost us big time. Every offseason we talked about how we can fix our pass rush because Jerry wasn’t enough. Ed oliver to the rescue. Rousseau, epenesa, Basham all drafted to fix the problem. That didn’t happen. So we break the bank for Von Miller. And that actually worked…..until that unfortunate Thanksgiving day that we lost von for the next 2 playoffs (and maybe his career). so McD is supposed to stop KC and Cinci with addison, Shaq, butler, settle, always injured Phillips, star, Murphy, Basham and AJ rushing the passer. Got it. Rousseau is a very good DL, but only a slightly above average pass rusher. AJ is solid. Floyd and Miller were nonexistent in the playoffs. Ed is great, but was completely shut down vs KC in the playoffs- as he had to play 80% of the snaps. Mcdermott couldn’t find a way to stop Mahomes and Kelce with AJ Klein out there the entire game with no pass rush. Talent matters…..just like it matters for playmakers offense. How many super bowls are won by teams with no pass rush and a crap DL? Not many. That said, I don’t think McD is without fault. He has been part of the problem in season ending losses. Other parts include injuries, offensive/defensive game plan and execution. -

lol, yeah it was 2021 that had the delay. We had our way with them, partly because Chris Jones didn’t play due to injury. -

Right. As if Von Millers injury hasn’t thrown a massive monkey wrench into our defense for the last 2 playoff runs. As if missing 2 starting corners doesn’t matter. As if missing all of our starting LBers hasn’t mattered. As if our best two DTs being injured vs Cinci didn’t have an effect on our D (plus von miller). all this talk about us not surrounding Josh with enough weapons every year (and I agree, I wish we had invested more on O)…..we can’t get it done because we don’t have enough talent on O…..yet McD is supposed to stop Mahomes and Burrow in the playoffs with even lesser talent (due to injury) than Josh has on O? If we had added hopkins last offseason and he and Kincaid would’ve gotten injured, that would’ve certainly been one of the factors that led to our season ending. That’s what’s happened to our D. Every season, our biggest investments and key players have been getting injured and missing the playoffs. I’d love to see KC win the SB without Chris Jones. If he had torn his acl late in 2022, they wouldn’t have won the last two SBs. No one could convince me otherwise. Was that the rain delay game? Or was that 3 years ago? -

And the defense is missing several key players every year in the playoffs. Not 1 or 2 or 3 players on d. 3,4,5 key players/investments. what was McD supposed to do last year when every DE got shut down by the KC OL? When AJ Klein is out there in coverage vs Kelce playing 98% of the snaps because the teams 3 original LBs were out with injury. When Douglas was out there on one ankle while Benford and Tre were already out? Leonard floyd gets injured (38% snaps), miller injured and useless. we held top 5 O Miami to 20 and 14 points. We held KC to 17. We the top scoring offense in Dallas to 10. We CAN. I maintain that we just need to be relatively healthy, game plan better and execute. We don’t NEED a top 2 offense to win a SB. Sorry, I just don’t think that’s the reality. -

It’s not really a check book though. It’s a salary cap thing. Trading him this year would be one of the dumbest moves in team history as we just rewrote his contract. We would’ve had less dead cap if we just kept it as it was. So trading him, we’d have to restructure someone else to free up 16M and kick another 16M down the road. Just doesn’t make sense. -

This is ridiculous. We need to get some stops….like every Super Bowl winner gets. The last 11 super bowls, only 3 champions have given up 25 points or more. In the last 6 super bowls, the winner has given up 22 or less in every game except KC vs Philly. Stay relatively healthy, game plan properly and execute. Having a top 2 O with a below average D = no championship. 9/10 times -

According to his new contract, this is DEFINITELY not the case. unless you’re talking about next season, which we’d have to pay 3M more than his cap hit if we moved him. This year….we’d pay over 16M more than his current cap hit. He’s a bill in 2024 💯 -

No they dont- they just have to be healthier than last year, have a better game plan and execute. everyone likes to talk about the roster as being the basis of winning or losing. The chiefs were a lost cause in December of 23. Everyone said their WRs suck and that KC left Mahomes out to dry by not giving him proper weapons. Then they win the SB. Why? Because they were healthier, well coached and executed when they had to. That’s what we need. The best roster in September rarely wins the SB imo. -

Gtd $ 1.2 vs 3 bonus up to 4.5 vs up to 8.25 almost the same = over twice as much? -
As bad as this looks now, just wait til Ben Johnson leaves after the season.

He doesn’t drop all of them. He came up big for them en route to the Sb -

I’m one of his biggest detractors. That said- he made some huge play last post season. I’m sure he’d revert back to the unreliable version if we signed him, but he’s worth a shot considering our current WR5-6. He’s brings us a deep threat -
Definitely hard to project. I just think that 12 will be part of our identity. 50% or so is my prediction

NFL Ref John Parry joins NFL team (Update: It’s the Bills!)
NewEra replied to Einstein's topic in The Stadium Wall
Good. He doesn’t count on the cap….why would anyone not like an additional perspective? -
I’m with this, but I think it could be 45-55% of the snaps. His new contract all but guarantees him to be a bill this year and next. I think 12 personnel will be used more than some would like/prefer.
-
I just mentioned shorter because he’s a 2nd year draft pick like Bernard was. I’m not a fan of the football player and think that Shavers may take his spot
-
A guy that had shown nothing turned very good starter- I don’t think we really have that. Edwards, Edwards, Rapp, Benford have all started several games prior to this season. I don’t consider them to be the same as Bernard. Benford had his coming out party last season, just like Bernard did. Closest I can see on the roster would be Dewayne Carter. Also a 3rd rd pick, may not start but could get 50ish% snap counts and I think he’ll be a plus player. Not great, but I think he’ll emerge as a core player over the next 4 years, starting in 2024. Elam would be up next, but I have lot more confidence in him becoming a good starter at this point then I had in Bernard last season. shorter, shavers, hamler, morris could be considered but I don’t see any of them becoming nearly as good as Bernard. I’d give Morris the best chance once Knox inevitably gets injured.

Tommy Sweeney signed with Bears after tryout.

Tommy? -
To my eye, Davis was a better RB than Moss in college. Much better lateral mobility, better burst and hands. I think moss may have brought slightly more power, but I hated that pick when we made it. Surprised that we went RB in rd 4 (was hoping rd 5), but I like the player that we drafted and I think he’ll be our starter going into his 3rd year
-
He knows. Everything. If ya don’t know, know ya knowwww

I think Hollins > Claytool based on their contracts. Hollins making over 2x the $ and has a 1.1M dead cap. Claypool 25k. If I’m wrong, then that’ll be a great thing, as maybe he has figured out how to be a pro. I’m happy that we rolled the dice on him based on potential.
-
I think he’s likely to be top 3 in targets. Doesn’t really matter if he’s a starter or not. Within the first month I think Keon will have a similar snap count to Gabe based on his run blocking but I think Shakir will get more targets. I expect a continued high use of the run game Barring injury, in order of targets, I’ll go: Kincaid Shakir Samuel Keon Cook Knox Hollins Davis
