ESPN cutting hundreds of jobs
Just in Atlanta replied to Just Jack's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
The purpose of a business is to make money for stockholders, not to employ people. It's a cold fact of life. But the alternative system is far worse. That said, I echo nearly everyone else: ESPN is near unwatchable. -

Are You Excited About The New Bills ?
Just in Atlanta replied to Owen's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I expect an exciting offense, and an aggressive defense. For that I am excited. But I have no expectations of a lot of Ws. Last year's team in the offseason looked hella good...and we were terrible. Complete coaching overhaul, new systems on both sides, a lot of rookies, likely a lot of mistakes...likely a similar record. But yeah, I am excited. I was last year too. I've learned, as most here have, to temper expectations after 13 years of drought. -
Fixed. Commonly-accepted style is to capitalize the first word after a colon if the phrase can be used as a full sentence. And what he meant to say was everything, except one, was correct. But even that was intended to show the absurdity of bashing someone's spoken English, which often doesn't translate well to paper. Mr. Tolstoy, who professes to be a writing instructor or something, is living in a 1950s 4th grade grammar class. People who get paid to write for a living do pretty much everything opposite of what he says.

Mr. Tolstoy kind sir: Well, good one on whether. Not how I use it for sure, but it is technically correct. Nonsense on the OTAs. (Chicago) allows for an apostrophe "only when an abbreviation contains internal periods or both capital and lowercase letters." AP--which 90 percent of publications worldwide use--says no way. Plus, it just looks weird. Weak sauce on the fragment, but I know (hope) you're kidding. And double spaces suck yak balls. But you'll always find one person out of a thousand who loves yak balls. JIA 1 million Tolstoy 1 Edit: Marrone 2 million. (I think he sounds fine.)

Since we're into grammar and all: Quoted on Buffalobills.com, when referring to the need to institute blitz packages as early as OTA's, OTAs, here is what the head-coach head coach of the Bills said: Fixed. OTAs -- not a possessive or a contraction. Head coach is not hyphenated. And... Whew. I can't follow that. We could be in for some painful post-game press conferences. But, I suppose that doesn't really matter. If he wins, I could couldn't care less whether if he puts a grammatical sentence together. You're saying you actually care. And whether x or y. You have no y. Something has to give. Further, it'll be a long season with two spaces between each of your sentences. One space is accepted practice in business writing, the Internet and most of civilized society. Even Marone knows that.

Miami writer: Stevie Johnson's a No. 2
Just in Atlanta replied to GOBILLS78's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Whatever. No. 1. No. 2. He's solid in short and immediate ranges. Elite in terms of route running/elusiveness, actually above average in drops (check the stats...despite the big ones he's dropped) and a little below average in speed. Regardless he's above average overall and I'm glad he's on the team. -
Is anyone else worried about Da'Rick Rogers
Just in Atlanta replied to bufffan031's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
We're all hoping he's not a da'nger to this team. Or a da'mn disappointment. Otherwise he'll be cleaning rooms at the Da'ys Inn this fall. In all seriousness, though, I think he's a da'rk horse candidate for the No. 3 WR spot. He's got da' skills. Even as an unda'clared agent. OK, the last one was pushing it. -

Poll: Should the "Redskins" name be changed?
Just in Atlanta replied to Just in Atlanta's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Bigot: A person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices;especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance. Thanks to the overuse of this word, and the R word, it has no real meaning anymore. -
Going for it and clock management
Just in Atlanta replied to Harveyj001's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That's a statement in a vacuum. I don't remember that call specifically, but who's to say they weren't put in the position of being so close because of going for it on another 4th down? Whose to say they didn't win two games for going for it more often on 4th? I'm not saying you're wrong, or right. But your statement solidifies why coaches are so ultra, ultra conservative. Fans look at one instance in a vacuum, and forget the body of work. All it takes is one loss and many fans forget the many wins.
