Just like when QBs get most of the credit when the team wins, they get much of the blame for when they lose - and neither makes sense. Tyrods mediocrity as an NFL QB does not mean the team is mediocre in all areas. And a losing team does not mean the QB is a loser or failure. See some of the greatest QBs of all time in their first season or two - the records were bad, but there was no mistaking they had the goods of an NFL QB, while their team was built and coaching staff changed the culture.

I'm glad the Bills are winning....no fan is ever going to hope for their team to fail. But if you think I'm eating any kind of crow or humble pie related to Tyrod's playing abilities thus far, then you and I are watching different games. He continues to do what he's done well: be an incredible athlete and quite good at throwing downfield. What doesn't do well is stand in the pocket and make the passes, anticipate and throw receivers open, consistently make the throws I would expect an NFL QB to make such as the last few games having wide open receivers and not even coming close or asking his receivers to dive for the ball when it should have been at least within arms length of making the catch. I can't fault him for the lack of audibles - initially I did and then I read last week where Rico is not giving him that freelance ability, so no fault of his own, but he is otherwise a great athlete and pedestrian NFL QB. He's better than what is out there, but his development thus far is very minor. We'll see how he does the rest of the year, but I for one think he's still basically the same QB. His Defense has been outstanding - that's what has won the games and kept them in the game against Carolina where if he had just made a better throw, the Bills could very well be 4-0. However, he's overall done enough so I'm not complaining....but don't mistake silence for outright endorsement. It means, he's ok for now....but dear God, not the future.

McD's worst decision this year...

Honestly, to me its more about Taiwan Jones...meaning, hes a gifted runner and has time to learn Offense since they got him, give him a chance to run the ball. -
McDermott: Bills Need More Urgency from Dareus
BigBuff423 replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Dareus has not been the same since he got his new contract....some people can handle the big money and some people can't....I said at the beginning of the Off-season that no matter the status if the player doesn't fit the mold, they won't be in Buffalo....Watkins has been traded, Ragland has bee traded, Darby has been traded, Gilmore is gone, etc.....Dareus' contract and cap casualty is the ONLY reason he's still in Buffalo....and I think Beane will find a way to move him in the Off-season presuming he doesn't get it together and demonstrate his true desire to be a part of this team and the Buffalo community as a whole (One Buffalo). -
which is why I added the caveat that "I think it could be done", but it requires all systems to operate at optimum speed, meaning players, ball placement by officials, getting play called, etc....and to "assume" that would happen would benefit the team who did nothing wrong other than stop the player short of the goal line and then the officials decided to replay the score (or i guess now all scores are replayed)....again, it sucks, but I understand why the rule is there....this just happens to fall into that narrow .01% of incidents where the rule applied really doesn't apply and in fact hurts the competition of the game
-
It doesn't seem exactly fair, but with 8 seconds left on the clock, the officials / rule book determine that it would be wholly unfair to have the replay and give Detroit enough time to concoct a play, get to the line and snap the ball when in 8 seconds it's almost impossible although I think it could be done. So, putting the time on the clock, essentially would have given Detroit an extra TO and more time to get organized which is certainly an unfair extension. Just unfortunate wacky thing....

I hope for the best, and of course I really want the Bills to win...but the Offense has yet to establish itself and while I think the Bills' Defense is better than we anticipated, we are just 3 games into the season. If the Offense could have done more against Carolina, 3-0 would like real nice, but alas....so, I'm hopeful as always, but still can't see how the Bills come out of Atlanta with a W given the Offensive woes for the Bills, more than anything else....

I'm Surprised by Zay Jones' Slow Start
BigBuff423 replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I understand your point (i think), but it is a rare thing for a Rookie WR to come in and make an immediate impact. It usually takes one year in the NFL, to stay healthy and have the same Offense at that, to really see the stride we want in terms of production. I'm not going to turn this into a Tyrod bashing thread, but Zay is open on a number of occasions and he's not getting thrown to....it's hard for a pass catcher to make just one or two catches a game, he's got to get 5-6 targets at least to give him some confidence and feel for the game / ball. -
I did not believe the Bills would win....so I'm happily choking down the bird. However, my opinion on Tyrod remains the same. Great Defense by the Bills and my opinion of TT notwithstanding, great mental fortitude by the Offense to keep plugging and fighting. To me that reflects coaching as much as anything else, which bolsters my guarded positive opinion of McD. **One thing to nit-pick: time management, needs to get better, but considering all things, this team is playing like....a team. Been a long time for that to happen and it's refreshing.

Consider the Defenses yet to be played: Denver, Atlanta is pretty good and in some ways underrated more by reputation, Cicinnatti's issues are Offensive - they're Defense has been very good so far, Tampa is a beast - really one of the best in the league now, Raiders, Chiefs, and Dolphins twice...then add in Patsies who use their Offense as Defense, and that is one hell of a tough road to go for Tyrod who is NOT good enough to carry the Offense. Sorry, but enough with the apologies for his QB play.

I've been done since about halfway through his first season....have said it all along. He's tremendously gifted athlete, but he is not an NFL caliber QB....the last dual threat to be good for any length of time was Michael Vick. Russell Wilson uses his mobility to pass the ball and no one is going to confuse Tyrod with RW...other than that, all GOOD to GREAT NFL QBs are pocket passers (primarily) and yes in my mind Aaron Rodgers qualifies because he moves within the pocket and buys time for the purpose of making good / excellent passes and takes the hits while throwing....the next Tyrod completes a pass in the pocket while the pocket collapses, will be his first time. I have no idea what the Bills have in Peterman, but I'd rather watch him for the rest of this year in hopes the Bills hit the lottery than not knowing going into the Off-Season with the Bills hell-bent on Drafting a high 1st Round QB while STILL not knowing if Peterman is already dead man walking or a year of development away from being good and the long-term solution.....and for all those who claim you or the Bills already know, please see recent examples of most everyone getting it wrong only to see a good QB emerge....Prescott, aforementioned Russ Wilson, Trevor Siemian is still developing but he just carved up the NFC East Champs and yes the Denver D won that game for them as much as their Offense did, but have to give credit where it's due and that dude was a 7th Rounder....I digress....sit Tyrod, and let the chips fall where they may.....

There are good and fast WRs on this team, you don't need elite speed to have a deep pass. All across the NFL you'll watch highlights of deep passes on fast but not elite fast type WRs who make these types of catches. It's not about fast per se, it's about scheme and design.
-
I feel like this was the kind of game where the passing game had to set up the running game. And, we know what happened - I'm not a Tyrod fan and have said as much often enough, but this was a tough Defense. Honestly, they need a big pass play early to get the D to relax off the line a bit and then use Shady in slot and Tolbert in backfield.

RD 5, Pick 171: Nathan Peterman (QB) - Pitt
BigBuff423 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Time will tell but I like the potential Peterman has in this system... -
If we're counting trades, Lynch has to be near the top...I know he was a single law enforcement encounter away from a nice suspension, but the history remains a bitter pill to swallow especially given the 4th round return.

Jeremy Maclin (Agrees to 2 year deal with Ravens)
BigBuff423 replied to BillsDiehard's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm not picking here, but this appears more to the point you don't like the Ducasse signing regardless of where or when they got him, or so it appears. Fair enough, but I think it clarifies your argument a bit - or does so IMHO. -
Jeremy Maclin (Agrees to 2 year deal with Ravens)
BigBuff423 replied to BillsDiehard's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't think they should release Ducasse given the dearth of depth at the O-line. As for Holmes, I think he fits the big bodies WR McD came to like in Carolina. Releasing another WR makes sense of course...but I think I'd rather try to use his size in certain situations since there isn't much of that for Buffalo. -

Rumor- Bills will entertain trade offers for Watkins?
BigBuff423 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
What I continue to fail to understand is that people keep thinking this is the 90's NFL...take a look at the Super Bowl contenders and winners over the last 5-7 years. UDFA and late round Drafted WRs....it takes a really good to great QB, solid play elsewhere, i.e offensive line or defensive line play etc. and the RBs and WRs tend to be role players. So, yeah - I'm good with it to get more important positions as a whole given better talent such as Center that is going to be a real issue next year or DE... -
Rumor- Bills will entertain trade offers for Watkins?
BigBuff423 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I know this will incite quite a response - but I would be in favor of it, because I just don't think Watkins fits McD's plan for the long-term....I've said it before, if he plays for them this year, I think they move on. -
Don't blame you at all - but it is in Deep South Georgia. Lived there as a kid over the course of several years - a really deep pool of talent in the high school ranks. As I noted earlier in thread, Sports Illustrated did a 12 page spread on the Lowndes County (Valdosta) high school football team.

No sure fire Franchise QB's in 18' draft class
BigBuff423 replied to KellyToughII's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm not sure where the Bills will be Drafting next year of course, and we don't know how the college season will play out leading to the evaluation of QBs, but one thing I do know is that the Bills have accumulated a nice group of talent evaluators and trust if they were to ever to get it right since the Kelly era, I believe this is the group to do it...so, let's see what happens, but it currently appears to be a good year to have TWO 1st round picks, more so than some other years. -

Beane assembles "all-star" staff
BigBuff423 replied to papazoid's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Of course every one of us have the right to think / feel / believe what they'd like....for me that's not the issue. I do understand the pessimism, I've been a fan for over 30 years during the great years of Kelly and the worst years since then, but at some point if all you have interest in posting on this board is effectively drizzling the steaming pile of donkey poop on to another person's optimism, I have to question your purpose. It's not like this was Buffalo Bills propaganda, this source and a number of others have pointed to real change at OBD and it is showing in who they hire...that's all they can do right now...there are no live practices, pre-season games or real games....so that's all there is to go on, promise and speculation. Someone doesn't like it or agree, yes it's their right to disagree - but does it really warrant the time and energy to come into a thread that is relatively optimistic and generally based in "Hey, this looks good, let's wait and see what we've got here", and dump all over it?? At some point the culture needs to change with the fans as much as it needs to with the players....and yes, we all want proven winners BEFORE we give hope a chance, but that's not how change works....
