Arians: Best QB Class In 15-20 Years
BigBuff423 replied to Jamie Muellers Ghost's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
And you may very well be right...for me, and if I had to make that decision, he just wouldn't be worth that kind of risk. Luck would have been, but he was a senior and had developed as far as he was going to in college. Rosen may be the best QB to come out in a long time, but some information - not sure of its veracity - indicates he doesn't "love" football to the extent he's willing to put all of his hours, heart and soul into becoming the best he possibly become. If the Bills were to get that kind of vibe from him during Combine interviews, that would definitely make me NOT want to move up to top 3 for that. JMO, but I do respect yours and I can't argue hard against doing everything to get that guy....I'm just not sure I'm sold on anyone being worth that kind of sacrifice in this year's Draft with the roster in its current state. And similarly, I understand your perspective as its a highly shared one and I thank you for discussing this respectfully and maturely. However, I do disagree because unless the Bills were to do whatever is necessary to get to #1 - again doubtful for a variety of reasons - you could make that leap any year for any player you feel is truly worth it. The years when Eagles and Redskins made giant leaps to get up to 2, they gave up the following year's #1 and got their guy. But, in a year where there is a real good pool of QBs, why use so much Draft capital in a year when you REALLY need alllllllll of it to make a good roster, and a good to great QB comes to you?? That's just my perspective, but of course if the Bills use every pick they have and get up to #1 or #2 and Draft Rosen, it's not like I'm going to be rooting against the guy. I'll love him when he puts on the Bills uniform just like any other player and give him the same room to grow and show his worth. -
You pick the curve... (OBD will be behind in '18)

I chose Trading Away a Core Veteran, but I don't see that as a "gaffe" despite the title. To me, it's Beane's interest in re-making the roster the way he and McD and their FO believe it needs to be so they can be competitive and have the right group of guys in the locker room. Everyone roasted Beane for the Watkins trade until months later Sammy made statements about his selfishness, hence the trade and the kind of atmosphere McD and Beane want in the locker room. Reading an article about Belichick and how many UDFAs he gets and how many 1st round and early round drafted guys he cuts or trades, you see how important it is to acknowledge when it's time to move on. We don't like to give Belichick credit, but if you're a football fan, you have to respect his accomplishments and how he's achieved them, not to say you like him as a person or the Pats. With that in mind, I think we're seeing how much more important it is that a player fit within the larger system rather than just getting a guy who is supremely talented and assuming he'll make a difference. To that end, I think Beane sheds a few Vets one way or another. -
Arians: Best QB Class In 15-20 Years

JMO, but to me what you named: LB / DT / RB is exactly where I think the Bills need to go most, except for QB. WRs are a dime a dozen in the NFL these days, and if they don't get a high priced QB, there's money for another decent WR, plus obviously it's also all about where in the Draft you're getting those guys. People will shout me down and throw insults, but I would trade Shady, sign Crowell and Draft a guy like Sony Michel or Ronald Jones in the 2nd. I would sign Paul Richardson or Brice Butler, Tahir Whitehead for LB, Bodine for C, Bromley for DT, Andrew Norwell for Guard, Lawson as a CB and use the picks for QB, DT, LB, RB, LB, CB, DE, DT, WR. And that's assuming the Bills don't trade Tyrod for a mid round pick, or Hughes...I would like to keep Glenn if possible, but I would move him to LG which is where he was projected by a number of "experts", and only because Dawkins is younger and hasn't had the mobility issues Glenn has had with his feet recently. Point being, the Bills have FA money and will have more if / when they trade Tyrod and Hughes. And I know I'm alone, but I think Beane makes more "surprising" changes this Off-season than people expect. -
Arians: Best QB Class In 15-20 Years
BigBuff423 replied to Jamie Muellers Ghost's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Of course only time will tell whether Arians' statement proves to be true, like the 2004 and 1983 Draft class, but when you look at history, it does suggest this year is a year in which the Draft is "due" for a great QB class. Also, since we have no way of knowing the future (unless you're Dunkirk Don) there is no "sure thing", no guarantee. Heck, even Luck was a "sure thing" and while he was amazing for a few years, injuries and coaching have sidetracked his trajectory, but not derailed it. So, I like Rudolph where the Bills are and Mike White for their choice in 3rd round should he last that long. Honestly, Darnold may evolve into something fantastic, Rosen may be the "chosen one" and Josh Allen might very well be the next John Elway (based on arm strength alone) as Jackson might be the next Vick. But, trading UP in a class with a breadth of talent and not necessarily a single elite talent, does not make sense to me and it gives away the Bills' strength this Draft: quantity. Bills should make that quantity work for them and utilize all of those Draft choices to re-make the roster AND get their QB. You just don't trade up....and in THIS class, I don't think you need to unless 5 QBs go in the top 10....which is possible, but unlikely. One thing us fans should keep in mind, the Draft NEVER, EVER goes the way everyone *thinks* it will and prospects fall and slide. -
Hate to say it...Tyrod will be back
BigBuff423 replied to Hebert19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Obviously, no one really knows what's going on behind the scenes and therefore, until something happens....anything is possible. However, listening to Beane's comments about what he wants out of a QB and listening to McD's non-committal statements regarding Tyrod, I think those two things add up to Tyrod not being on the team next year. I do understand the lean toward wanting to bring Tyrod back because he's been better than what the Bills have had, except for one good year for Fitzy, since Bledsoe (YIKES!). But to me, this is like keeping the quasi-ugly girl as your girlfriend just because you're not *sure* the girl you REALLY want will go out with you and well, you need to get it from somewhere and she's a guarantee a few nights a week. Problem is....that same girl.....you don't marry her. You move on as soon as you get the chance. However, in the football scenario you don't get 10 to 15 years to get it right, so if you don't make the move - you're just done. No chance, no figuring it out....just left out. Bills need to make their decision on 2 QBs they believe they absolutely MUST have, and then execute the plan to obtain him. Final answer, game over. -
I chose "Other" because Trade Up is a bit nebulous but I'm assuming Trade Up means into top 5 and that is far too rich in Draft capital for my blood....if this were the 3rd year where Beane an co. had a chance to truly acquire the players they need for McD and the Bills were basically a QB and couple pieces away from being a true contender for the next decade, I'd say trade up. But, Bills have multiple holes for starters and lacking depth in almost every area. So, I'm with a sign a Vet as insurance and then Draft a guy like Mike White in the late 3rd to be your Rookie. Have said Rookie, ala White, compete with Vet and Peterman and may the best man win. This allows FA to be for trading Tyrod for say, a 4th, and Glenn and Hughes for let's say mid round picks or other valuable depth or role players or a combination thereof, and then using FA money on 2 OL, 2 DT, 1 OLB, 1WR, 1RB, 2CBs. Then, you Draft bascially the same thing but not in that order and actually they would need to Draft 2 or 3 LBs compared to 1 CB. This way, you have given your team a totally new roster within a couple years and by next year if Rookie / Peterman / Vet put out the same productivity as Tyrod did or worse, you have secured a load of talent for when you do need to go up and get "your guy". For full disclosure, I was ALL IN on the Trade Up scenario until Darnold sucked it up in late season, Allen was my guy going into 2017 and we know his year, and Rosen is still so young. Mayfield.....not for me. That means that only guys who have shown they are Seniors, leaders, accurate, good enough arm talent, and production are Rudolph and White. Falk is an intriguing guy, but a 5th Rounder to me. And, if I have to essentially take a guy I don't absolutely LOVE in the Draft, I'm not using a 1st Round pick on him. Rosen is too inexperienced despite his talent, Darnold has some giant warts, and Allen can't seem to be consistent enough for me to fall "in-love" with my decision to Draft him early. These are the reasons I chose, "Other". And Cousins, takes all the Cap space, not allowing the team to really address a couple key areas in FA - and I don't mean big name, big money FAs - just that the Bills need so many of them. For the record I'd take Andrew Norwell for OG, Bromley for DT, and then Bennie Logan for DT, Bodine for C, Okafor DE, Paul Richardson WR, Isaiah Crowell for RB, Tahir Whitehead for OLB, Nevin Lawson Detroit and Kyle Fuller Chicago for CBs.

NFL is always unpredictable.... It also means Skins are going QB early. Gives them what Bills wanted - a bridge to long term answer. -
Eric Wood's contract still in limbo and then they fire Byrd....Ralph is cheap.

James Washington = Lee Evans Reincarnate
BigBuff423 replied to H2o's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I agree....he's a great receiver, but he is much thicker and while he's fast, he isn't long-speed fast....he has an agility and step that help him separate but when watching the long TDs, he certainly got NFL speed, but he's not pulling away from guys like a Lee Evans / Chris Johnson type of receiver. To me, he is the ideal slot guy...because he's a bit thicker, has the step and agility I spoke of and yet still can take it to the house, he's a great guy for over the middle / underneath routes. Washington is a great receiver, but when you watch the two highlights, which in your opinion shows the similarities, I see the differences. Evans would get a ball and immediately separate through his speed, if he got a step he's gone. Washington creates the twitch and shift to get that separation and if it's too long of a run, you can see Defenders slowly gaining ground and in one of the highlights you provided, Washington almost doesn't make it to the endzone despite 20-30 yards of green in front and a Defender a couple yards behind him. If that were Evans, by the endzone no one else would be in the picture. Again, I think Washington is going to be a really good WR for someone, and it'd be nice if it were the Bills, but I don't think he's the speed-ster type like Evans. I think at best he's the possession type on the boundary, but probably best in the slot where he can use his quick step and twitch to get that separation and then allow him to make some extra yards with his footwork and size. -
Best Bills-Related Twitter Follows
BigBuff423 replied to ndirish1978's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I agree, these two are great. I love the Quinn and John Wawrow back-and-forth....really, jw has been a bit of a douche with Quinn...there was some good natured ribbing by Quinn and jw took it and ran with it, dating back to Milano's Drafting and the questions that followed.....goes back to at least May of last year, maybe sooner....but these two are good guys that put out some good information. Credit to both of them. Chris Traspasso also...like his stuff and he seems to be even-minded and can handle some of the Twitter jerks that attempt to bait him into debates. He's a good follow....also, fwiw, for Traspasso who does a lot of Draft stuff and bringing in good information for years now, Rudolph is his QB1.... -
Look, I was all for giving Nate a chance, I went on record and I'm not going back on it just because he had one of the worst halves in all of football like, since footballs were oblong... I think McD's decision has to be taken in context of Tyrod's abysmal play for two weeks and the season seemed like it was slipping away, so he made a bold move. Something for years the previous Bills' coaches would not have done. I don't have any problem with it. And I too think Nate redeemed himself, just a little bit - let's not get crazy, with his snow-ball game and utilizing Benjamin. So, I'm intrigued by his possibility with a better OC and hopefully a better QB Coach. But....and this is a giant backside BUT, I'm not comfortable pinning all the hopes onto Peterman. I no longer want Tyrod at QB, and hope the Bills can trade him for something like a plate of brisket and some condoms (what? both are for slow burning meat), and that there is still a way to get a guy like say, Alex Smith to be the Bills QB as the quality Vet for the team. And, I want the Bills to draft a guy....I personally would prefer them NOT to trade up, but if they do - they need to go all in and get into top 3 - if not (and this is my choice), you take value at 21 / 22 and trade back if at all possible out of one of those spots getting DL / LB / WR / OL and Edge, and taking a guy like White in mid-rounds, i.e. 3rd / 4th depending on how the Draft falls. Then if Peterman is everything you hope he is and I can hope too, he will beat out A. Smith, the rookie QB and anyone else that shows up to challenge him....the best QBs have done just that: demonstrated they have the goods and no one can take it from them.

Bills still making Bad Contract decisions
BigBuff423 replied to MAJBobby's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Only in a Bills fan's world could a guy who has held the Center position for going on ten years, done wonderful works in the community he has learned to call home, been by all accounts a terrific teammate and a decent but not great player, while enduring nearly a decade of misery on God-awful teams, be called out for a "bad contract" while simultaneously bashing the Bills for doing the deal. So, it's the Bills' fault for not knowing, or it's their fault for knowing and offering him a contract anyways, or it's Wood's fault for taking the contract knowing he had a degenerative disease....wtf?? Seriously Bills fans, what has happened to some of you? This man has played through TWO gruesome leg injuries, reached the Pro Bowl, been a gentleman in the local community, has been a good teammate and professional all the while showing moments of transparency during one of the all-time worst playoff droughts in all of American sports, and there's questioning of a contract?? Count me among the ones who will take Wood at his word and say he didn't know, his family didn't know and for f-in sure the Bills didn't know when they made the contract extension that Wood had a degenerative disease such as this. I'm no doctor - obviously - but I'm going to say that if by now there is no counter medical opinion to Wood's statements thus far, then this is all possible and therefore based on credibility earned by Wood, probable. I also find it hard to believe that Wood, and maybe more to the point his wife (would allow without much protest), would willingly take the field knowing his entire life as he knows it could be over with one damaging hit...and he doesn't play WR, he gets hit on every.....single.....play. Folks, lighten up...it's unfortunate for the Bills and their cap situation, but the bigger issue is Wood's health and his family and the fact that we now get to see another side of Beane and his staff: can they adjust to major changes otherwise unforeseen. -
Tanner Lee is a dark horse QB to keep an eye on
BigBuff423 replied to SaviorPeterman's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Round 3 is the biggest reach since Akili Smith.....Tanner "The Turnover Machine" Lee is not getting Drafted....I don't even think the 7th round could save him...he's an UDFA and ends up with a team who has the interest in letting him get 3 years on the bench...so, Seattle or Rams or Bucs? All teams who have NO interest in actually getting a QB but need someone to throw the ball in camp...then he's on practice squad for a few years and at that point, he either has drastically improved or he's released and probably doesn't end up on another roster. If I'm wrong, please save this and remind me and I don't mind chowing down on humble pie with a side of crow. -
First, on all the observations regarding the "top 4" QBs, I would concur almost to a "T"....except, I do think Rudolph can be good in the right Offense. He would need a Pittsburgh type of Offense. At first I thought a WCO, but the more I've seen of him and the more I've gone back to re-watch his "highlights", the more I think he would do much better in a vertical offense that stretches the field. On everything else, again IMHO (for whatever that's worth, which according to my wife, isn't much) I tend to agree. As for the bolded portion, it could be he won't learn to adjust or adapt to the NFL speed at all, making him incapable of becoming a good or great NFL QB. However, as I mentioned earlier, he didn't even start playing the QB position until his Senior year in high school and then was thrust into the starting role at USF. He transferred to WKU and purposely wanted to red shirt a year so he could learn, and his Junior year showed the results. I think if he has a year - and just a year - to sit behind a Vet, can carry clipboard, sit through meetings, go through Pre-Season games but NO mop-up duty, I think he has real solid potential. With Daboll, I have far more confidence given his resume and recent work, to see the kid's strengths and weaknesses and utilize him appropriately. I do like this kid, and the more I see, the more I believe he'll be a "find" if he makes it past the 2nd round.
-
The more I see of White, the more I like him....and while originally I stated "4th round", as the place to get him...I'm thinking now it might take a round earlier, like the 3rd. I know what's being bandied about is trading up, or taking Rudolph and I like Rudolph if he lasts to 21....but given the Wood news, I think more realistically, the Bills will need to wait to get a guy like White. I think White needs to sit for a year if possible, but I don't think more than a year is healthy any more for QBs. Recent information suggests that the time when a QB would sit behind a Vet for 2 to 3 years, are gone. Moreover, Daboll and so many like him, are adapting the game - the fans' knock on Dennison is being stubborn to stay with his antiquated WCO. I really like the idea of Smith as a bridge QB to whomever, unless the Bills trade way up and then you start the guy and take your licks.
-
I’ll take White...the more I read of him and how he did through Senior Bowl week, the more I think he still has a great deal of potential. He did even play football and QB until his senior yr in high school - and had a 90mph fastball as a pitcher. On the subject of plan C, the aforementioned White in 4th, Peterman, and Smith for 5th this year (nothing more - unless a player for player is included ala Hughes and 5th for Smith and C. West)....if no Smith then I think honestly the best option is simply taking a flier with Tyler Bray and letting all 3 go earn it.
-
Any deal that requires the Bills to surrender a 1st or 2nd Round pick in 2019 is a terrible one. Bills will need all their picks again next year as roster overhaul continues and hopefully starts to round down more into maintenance than total dissolution.

Here's a link to FA Centers for 2018 - before any re-signings. http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/center/ Out of that list, Bodine and Richburg interest me the most...and I think if the Bills Draft a Rookie QB to start, you have to invest in a Vet Center. -
Eric Wood has career-ending neck injury; will retire
BigBuff423 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Eric Wood was always a great guy for Buffalo and played his heart out despite a couple of season-ending injuries in years past. The irony is that he played 100% of the Bills C snaps this year, only to have this....I sincerely wish him and his family a very long life of health, peace, and contentment. As for Wood the player, he was a very likable guy, and you rooted for him ever since he put on the Red White and Blue uniform....but, I also think the Bills could use an upgrade at Center, now is not the time to think about that...I'm merely saying there is the human side (see above) and the football side. Humanity overrules anything else, but planning for next year is a relevant topic given the sad news. -

This feels much like a morbid version of the Super Mario day when the board nearly crashed....whatever it is to whomever it is, I may or may not like the player for the Bills or believe their value is relevant to 2018, ie. Tyrod, but regardless, this is still a human being with people who care and love him and I hope it is something that while ends a career, is not something that alters the person's ability to live and enjoy the things that truly matter. -

Well, I'm assuming it's an injury of significance to a person of significance....but, then again, I'm just guessing like everyone else. You're right...entirely possible.
