Too bad we already have a coach... -
Modrak gets endorsement from RW & Buddy Nix
BigBuff423 replied to The Senator's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Why I think this article is important in that it points to other decision makers and NOT Modrak is that it may also lend some insight as to why the later draft picks and UDFAs are working out better. Jauron, Brandon, et. al, would have a greater investment in the top round picks, ala Maybin, and exercise their authority on getting who they want but when the later round picks come up, rely more heavily on the Scouting visa via Modrak and company. I sincerely think the Bills are heading the right direction and while the jury is still out on last year's draft class, I give it to Ralph coming flat out and stating that they have made many draft mistakes but that they don't necessarily directly reflect on Modrak. It does answer some questions regarding our previous drafts and why our drafts have paled in comparison to those of the Patsies, Jets of recent years, Packers, Giants, Ravens, and Colts who have perennial stellar drafts....all these teams have a true GM and football guru running the draft and have a great eye for talent overall. I think Nix and company are getting the boat turned in the right direction and another year will pass before we know if they're hitting true gold or fool's gold. But so far, I say Nix has a resume that presumes long-term success, let's give him and his staff a few years before we start pulling the "Spiller's a bust" bull ****. Give them time, I know it's painful and it's aggravating because we've been doing that for over a decade, but now with a true GM, a great Pro Scout and up and coming GM in Whaley, Gailey correcting the offense (with an immeidate impact for the better) and now with the hire of Wannstedt, we're moving in the direction of competency. Hands of the triggers fellas and let's see what shakes out before we go blowing a hole through our heads... -
The (Now Infamous) Bart Scott Post Game Interview
BigBuff423 replied to DrDawkinstein's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Gotta love that kind of intensity! Hope the Bills graduate to that type of intensity in the coming years! Love it! -
I was thinking the exact same thing as I watched McGahee run for that touchdown! I started thinking about all of the former Bills that were currently in the playoffs: Jim Leonard, McGahee, Lynch, Peters, Greer, Johnathon Scott, Sam Aiken (if he's still with the Pats), and there may be others that I'm not thinking of, but that's two running backs, a Pro Bowl LT and starting CB and Safety and reserve/Special Teamer and starting tackle for the Steelers. That's a lot of talent, and this is of course not mentioning other talent that's starting for other teams as some others have mentioned Winfield and Clements. And except for Scott (at least to my knowledge) those are players that the Bills either out-right drafted or got as UDFAs meaning that scouting can't be all of the problem there has to be some other dysfunction on draft day when you look at the Aaron Maybins, Donte Whitners, and Mike Williams of the Bills over the last 10 years. Disturbing...especially considering we are "building through the draft"! Which, I fully agree with in principle, but I also believe that you have to get at least a few impacting FAs that can contribute immediately while you "build through the draft". I don't want to be the Redskins but it would be nice to be someone like the Eagles who "build through the draft" but also get guys like Peters and Asante Samuel to contribute in the necessary areas of weakness. Ho-hum....I guess we'll see.

I don't think the Bills will go OLB with first pick. I could see something like Nick Fairley but given what the draft has to offer, I think if the Bills go LB, it will be in round 3. In early part of the season, for what it's worth, Ralph said that getting a franchise QB was job #1, and while I like Fitz, that still seems to be priority number one...until Ralph comes out to say something different. I would prefer a big DT like Fairley or Marcel Dareus (if he comes out) but could hardly argue with virtually any position they draft except WR, RB, or DB (which includes Safeties). I realize there are many people that will flame away at this notion, but I would really like to see the Bills try and draft Delone Carter as while Freddy has been great and he doesn't have a lot of yards on his legs, Carter is the prototypical hard, straight line runner that is a balance to Spiller's "shake-n-bake" style of running and he would have a little time to develop as Fred is good for at least another year. QB should be addressed at some point, but don't forget that Gailey mentioned after last year's draft that they liked Levi Brown and wanted to work with him to develop him for the future...now that he's actually ON the roster, maybe that is still the plan. Either way, after today, I think we'll have a better idea of what they're actually thinking....and if Brohm bombs out, all the more!

Anybody feel like owning up...
BigBuff423 replied to SageAgainstTheMachine's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I didn't make any specific predictions regarding how many wins the Bills would have but knew that this year was going to be brutal. I had no idea they would be as bad as they were in the first half of the season, so seeing them come on strong in the second half has been a very pleasant surprise. However, I have to disagree with a previous poster, I don't think Fitz is the long-term answer. Make no mistake, he's better than advertised and he's done a remarkable job given what the circumstances have been AND I give him most the credit for the O-line not looking as porous as they did last year. Having said that, he had no business making a few of the throws he made. Not because he's not talented or confident but because they were textbook examples of bad decision making. The TD to Nelson was a terrible decision and IF Dansby had been watching Fitz instead of Nelson, there probably would have been an INT and we would be flaming away at such a bad decision. And then the catch to Roosevelt, great job by Roosevelt who also looks like he can play and we haven't even seen Easely yet, but that was another bad decision. And then of course there was the INT....in other words, he's certainly better than most of us thought and he can hold the reins for this year and probably next, but to say that he's the QB of the future would be a mistake. Even though Chan seems to hold Fitz in high regard, I think Fitz is just a stop-gap, despite what Chan has said recently. -
Big props to you for being man enough to re-post your apology. Well done good Sir. More of us should take your example and make just as much noise about our apologies and wrong perceptions as we do pontificating about our opinions of the moment....hats off!
-
The problem with this assertion is that Nix has stated that he doesn't believe in signing top name FAs, but rather bringing in guys that are complimentary, good but not great players. He believes in building through the draft and it's hard to argue with teams that have taken that approach, ala Patsies, despite my disdain for them and their organization - it is hard not to respect how they go about their business and keep building the depth of their talent.
-
I don't have the answers and God knows, this team needs playmakers on Defense but I can see the merits to drafting a quality QB to groom. The only problem I have with your argument is that if the Bills truly believe that Fitz can carry the QB position for the next two to three years or longer, you're going to have a problem drafting a QB in the top 5 and paying him that kind of money to ride the pine for three years. And what if Fitz does so well that you just can't justify moving him out of the lineup? Then you spent a top 5 pick that you never play. The truth is that with Levi Brown, whom Gailey said they got for the purpose of grooming him, and Brohm as backups with Fitz playing well, Defense needs the attention. Does anyone really question that if we had last year's Defense with what the Offense has done since Fitz has been the signal caller that this team could very well have a reversed record than what they have now? Not that I'm against the transition to the 3-4, just that Gailey has used virtually the same personnel and gotten A LOT BETTER this year, while the Defense is the side of the ball in greatest transition. So, maybe take a QB in the 4th that is raw and needs work, but DL, LB, and then either another LB or D-lineman depending on what Free Agency produces should probably be the order. Offense has not been the problem since Fitzy has been under center and the most difficult transition has been on Defense because we don't have the necessary personnel. Just my two cents...all of this depending on how Fitz does the rest of the season, if he regresses then a 1st round QB is necessary but if he continues.....well....I guess it would be a good problem to have.
-
Okay, first, the trade deadline passed for this season so that would mean trading for a player next year....that's just freakin stupid. Take your Prozac and go back to bed......
-
Truthfully, there's too many variables at this point in the season to answer the poll effectively. I do understand why we're having this discussion, however, we really can't discuss this point effectively until the season is over and some other important questions are answered. A few of them would be: a) what's the Bills draft position? b) who has declared for the draft and who is staying in college? c) how has Fitz finished the year? d) how has the Defense finished the year? e) and what FAs have the Bills brought in?.....etc. But, overall, a good debate, it will just continue until draft day....and probably thereafter given that at least 50% of those on this board will most likely be disappointed with the Bills' draft
-
I think one of the good things that could come out of the Merriman signing, assuming he doesn't re-sign with us next year, is that we could find out if a good LB will make THAT much difference in this scheme. Now, before you say, "Well, duh?!!", what I mean is it might make it a little bit easier for the coaches to identify where the truest need is: DT or LB in order for this team to get significantly better on Defense. I realize we need both, but when it comes April and the draft is rolling around a conversation in the War Room might center around how the Defense either did or didn't improve with a solid LB and where he played. Because much like the O-line vs. QB quandry of what comes first, the chicken or the egg, often the question on Defense is: is the Defense line so bad that the LBs look like they're constantly chasing their own tails or are the LBs so bad that they're not keeping their assignments which means the DT are constantly being over-maned and overpowered?? Again, that isn't to say that we don't need both, because we do. But by having Merriman in here and even if he only playes six games the rest of the year it MAY help to know where this Defense is truly deficient. Just a thought...

I'm Glad Shanahan Did Not Want To Come Here
BigBuff423 replied to BuffaloBillsForever's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Honestly, I was one who wanted a "big name" coach to come to Buffalo, just because I wanted to have faith in the management of the team again after limp Dick ran this team into the ground. I realize he wasn't the only one to blame, Levy and a lack of a real GM certainly exacerbated the problem. But Jauron's lack of discipline and coaching savvy showed up on game day, regardless of whether the players liked him or not. However, I have to say, the Offense was in total disarray last year, they were absolutely HORRIBLE, and with Chan's propensity for making an Offense better, he has done just that. With many of the same players, he's getting the most out of them and they are playing much better since Trent has been run out of town and the Offense has had time to gel a little bit more. So Chan has been as advertised, and the Defense has been atrocious, but did we really believe that the Defense was going to get better or even stay the same in the first year that we changed to the 3-4?? I'm no "guru" but absolutely knew that the Defense was going to get worse before it was going to get better, simply because it was a new system and we did not have the personnel to play in such a scheme. But we're not building a Defense for THIS year or even NEXT year, but rather for the future. So it will take time for the Defense to get into proper game day shape and form. As for the Offense, we need to continue to improve in many areas but it's hard to complain with the results since Trent was let go seeing the likes of Parrish and Stevie J used more and in ways that they COULD have been used all this time. I think the remaining elements of the Offense such as the running game and getting the TEs involved in the passing game will come with time, hopefully by the end of the season. But folks we knew this was a rebuilding "process"....as for Shanahan, to hell with him!! If this is how he runs a locker room and throws his players under the bus, then let him stay in D.C. and he and the owner deserve each other. As for Chan...jury is still out, but looks like things are getting better, slowly, but getting better. -
are we done talking about fitz!!
BigBuff423 replied to 13player's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
No, we're not done talking about Fitz. We won't be done with talking about Fitz until the season is over and we will have the whole season to evaluate his contribution, be it good or bad. The truth is that so far I've been pleased with Chan's Offensive improvements, but I had some real problems with his play-calling at the end of the game and in OT. Honestly, I could NOT understand why they didn't run the ball more at the end of the second half and in OT. That plus they continued to try to run the ball on the outside despite having success running the ball between the tackles. That, plus our Run D is horrendous. However, I don't blame George Edwards the way some have, I still think it's too early. And to answer any smartass comments about how long you give Edwards to show whether he's competent or not, unfortunately I think it will take two whole seasons, this and the next. In large part because we're still acquiring the talent to play the 3-4. As for Fitz, not a fan, but not a detractor either, would just like to find out if he can carry the team long enough to determine if QB play is the biggest issue on Offense. There is still the debate regarding the Offensive line and what comes first, the chicken or the egg. Does a good QB hide O-line deficiencies or does a good O-line cover for a marginal QB? Of course we need a QB of the future, but Chan said it after the draft, Levi is guy they feel they can work with. If Fitz does "well enough", they may take the next year to shore up the O-line and build the Defense before they take a QB with a high first round pick, to hell with the "money" issue, I just want this team to be able to compete and win some games, without leveraging the future. -
Prediction: Chiefs 27 - 13 Offensive Enthusiasm Ends
BigBuff423 replied to box0life's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Even good Offensive Teams such as Indy, New Orleans, Patsies, etc. have bad Offensive games, so one bad or even two bad Offensive games does not a poor Offense make. Such as the last three good Offensive games for the Bills does not necessarily mean their Offense has turned a corner. Truthfully, it will take the rest of this season to discover whether or not this Bills Offense is for real or not. They need to do it in adverse weather, at home and on the road, against good teams (to prove they belong) and against bad teams (to prove they can focus when they need to and to finish a team off), they need to do it with the running game, they need to do it with the passing game and most of all they need to demonstrate they CAN WIN. All that said, I'll be the first to say that I'm encouraged by the demonstration of Offense over the last several weeks, but it will take the rest of the season to know exactly where this team is. -
Nix said it all when he said that they wanted to see Edwards for themselves. Honestly, it is not an easy thing to hear because most of us on this message board saw that Trent had all that unrealized potential but couldn't harness the necessary focus to be a gamer in the NFL. But Nix went on to make a good point that I hadn't heard anyone make on this board: he said that the NFL is riddled with good players that used to play in Buffalo and they didn't want to see another guy be cut or traded from this team that is playing well for another team that COULD have played well for the Bills. In other words, they wanted the opportunity to evaluate his skills and game playing ability BEFORE they made a rash and hasty decision. And not for nothing, but had they cut or traded Trent and IF, big IF, he went somewhere else and played lights-out, this board would have been the FIRST place to torch Nix and Gailey saying that they couldn't evaluate talent, that they should have worked with him more, yada, yada, yada....I didn't understand it at the time and wondered why he would be cut two weeks into the season, but having heard the explanation it was Nix's way of saying, "this is the year we take stock of our team for ourselves", even Gailey said about Stevie J in his recent press conference that he was led to believe that Stevie's talents and abilities were NOT to be counted on but that he made up his own mind and lo and behold, Stevie J can play! Need I say more about Parrish's recent emergence into this Offense?! I don't think so....they wanted to decide for THEMSELVES what they had and what they didn't. We knew this was at least a 3 year process....so here's year 1 and the Offense looks better than we thought, AND we focused on FA and the draft on Defense and most people here flamed away at Nix and Gailey and six games in after Fitz was named the starter, oh geez, it's the Defense that is leading to the losses, at least three of them thus far....so, here's to another week of clarifying the needs and deficiencies on Offense, Defense, and Special Teams. Ladies and gentlemen this is a year of EVALUATION, nothing more....
-
Actually, if Fitz continues to play at this level I would rather see the Bills use Fitz as their stop-gap and groom Levi for the QB of the future. I know he was a 7th round pick, but so what? During the games of the Pre-Season some of the analysts were saying that Levi had the best arm and size for a QB on the team but needed to grow into the position. Well, if Fitz continues to play well and the Bills can win some games, that would buy Levi this year and maybe another two to "grow" into the QB position, and imagine this....keeping the same freakin offensive system that would allow Levi to mature into it and take the reigns in a few years. Just a thought...especially if the Offense continues to play at this level, that would mean with Easely returning next year, and David Martin and Shawn Nelson along with Stupar, that O-line depth is needed but that the real playmakers needed would be on Defense; gap eating NT, DE and a couple of stud LBs....time will tell

Chan Gailey as advertised?
BigBuff423 replied to drinkTHEkoolaid's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The honest reply to this post is that while it's obvious that between the change in QBs and the fact that Howard appears to be a significant upgrade over Green, it is still too soon to tell. I'm also encouraged by the fact that almost all the same pieces are in place from last year on this offense and yet it is already showing signs of vast improvement, that leads me to believe the major difference is Chan. Think about it: Parrish was here for how long and just now we're seeing him being used regularly in the passing game, Stevie J was here and only got in the game occasionally, and except for Howard the Offensive line hasn't changed that much and they're showing signs of improvement in just 6 games. All that being said, I look forward to see what Easely can do next year, and what a true franchise QB can do, but maybe, just maybe, the Offensive line isn't as bad as we thought especially with Wang getting healthy. Two separate regimes have seen the potential in LT Bell and hav stuck with him and he is finally getting healthy with some experience, so let's just wait and see. But with all the potential Offensive woes over the last few years we've grown accustomed to second guessing whether our eyes are deceiving us, but right now, it looks like the biggest issue is the front seven. Ironically it's what the Bills spent two of the first three draft choices on, and got TORCHED on this very board for those decisions and yet here we are with most of the same players and the Offense over the first 6 games has out performed the Defense....as for the draft and FA, who knows what the rest of the season will reveal but as of right now, it appears that Defense may take the most FA and draft choices with maybe a QB being the first pick and then front seven Defense with some FA DBs, LBs and depth at the O-line...again, time will tell. -
Where do Good QBs Come From?
BigBuff423 replied to NaPolian8693's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The problem with this is that there are many other variables not discussed, simply the draft order of the QBs. Take the Jets for example, a few years ago they took 2 Offensive lineman in the first round, D'Brick and Mangold, and THEN got their franchise QB, the Rams took their LT two years ago, the year BEFORE Bradford, and that's not to say that the Bills shouldn't draft a QB, but all of the facts have to be put into light along with when a QB was drafted. The truth is the teams simply went about drafting QBs in different ways based on the team direction and their needs. As for Vick, he may have been a 1st round talent, but hardly a 1st round QB as evidenced by his recent play being that of a true QB before that he was a great athlete, but more of a QB/RB, if he couldn't read the Defense, he just ran it. Flacco had a great O line and ground game to help him in his developmental year, Rivers already had a solid O line in place when he took over, the same for Favre, and you list other potentials, yet Stafford with a great tool set, can't stay healthy cuz that Detroit Offensive line can't protect him. And to be honest, that would be my biggest concern in drafting a QB top 5 overall, sure we get the talent, but will that talent last and stay healthy if we can't keep him off his back or running for his life?? That doesn't mean to draft Locker by the way, just that I would be fine with either O line or D line, needing a true Nose Tackle, in the top 5 as much as I would be fine with getting a QB...as we can look at the examples given by the Poster, Kansas City is another example of where they went with Dorsey and Jackson two consecutive years in their rebuilding phase drafting in the top 5 and then got Cassel, a guy who didn't even start a single game in college, for a 2nd round pick and between great running, an improving Defense and a smart QB are starting to make some noise. That could be short lived but we have to admit right now, they look light years ahead of the Bills....just sayin. -
The Patriots have routinely used marginal WRs and TEs to win ball games, they have only recently had the services of Moss.....and LOST the Super Bowl. When they WON the Super Bowls that they did, there were no big name receivers on those teams. They were good, but they were good because the Offensive line could give Brady time and Brady could make the throws with good, but not necessarily great WRs. Did anyone remember that our Steve Johnson had 2 TDs on Sunday? And that trading Evans for a third rounder that could potentially be a starter on either Offensive or Defensive line is a good place to start. And IF, that's a big IF, Marcus Easely is the other outside starter than our WR position would not be in as dire straits that we may all think. With Parrish and Nelson playing well at times it begins to look like the best thing to do is Line, QB, and LBs as priorities. But hey, I guess we'll see what happens....

PLEASE come out Andrew Luck
BigBuff423 replied to John from Riverside's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
While Luck may look good, Nix stated that the Bills will be looking to draft players with a lengthy collegiate resume. QBs are especially prone to ups and downs in college, so the longer the resume and body of work the better your chances are of finding consistency. I would be opposed to drafting any QB in the 1st round, simply due to the fact that the likelihood of drafting a QB who can be successful at the NFL level with such a high investment such as a top 5 pick (which I'm sure we'll have) should be spent on the O-line, unless Bell really develops and demonstrates his ability to be a high quality LT. Again, look at the Dolphins a few years ago, Jake Long, the Browns with the third overall pick, Joe Thomas, both guys have gone to the Pro Bowl, and Thomas has gone a couple times. Detroit took a QB, and they can't keep him healthy due to protection issues, and with Bradford, we're only four games in and while he looks good in some respects the Rams also spent their last several high draft picks on offensive and defensive linemen. In 2005 it was an OT, 2007 and 2008 it was two DT, and then in 2009 it was their LT, THEN they picked their QB. I'm certainly not saying that the Rams are the franchise by which we should model ourselves, but if they are able to finally turn things around it will be a five year plan of using most of their high draft choices on the trenches, even this year in the 2nd round they took an O-lineman. Point is that this franchise NEEDS a long-term answer to QB but this league is riddled with QBs who have been successful and not taken in the 1st round. I'm NOT saying that we shouldn't spend a high draft choice on a QB such as in the 2nd round, but I also think that you may find a great QB anywhere in the draft and that you just have to realize that this team NEEDS nearly everything and it is a TEAM game, so I am also ok with being patient and seeing in the next 2 drafts where the best QB can come from assuming we're drafting offensive line, defensive line, and LBs and using the FA pick ups for things like TE and WR. Hate to say it, but another successful franchise has done just that, the Patsies. Anyways, right now, there's NO QB that has me salivating at the thought of throwing in the Red, White, and Blue. Just as a supplement to this post some of the QBs that were NOT taken in the 1st round and are starting (some doing well, and some not) are the following: Tom Brady, Chad Henne, Joe Flacco, Jake Delhome, Matt Schaub, David Garrard, Kyle Orton, Matt Cassel, Tony Romo, Kevin Kolb, Aaron Rogers, Brett Favre, Jimmy Clausen, Drew Brees, Matt Hasselbeck, and (for this week) Max Hall for the Cardinals. There are some pretty good players in this bunch, you may want to pay attention to these! -
I would have probably jumped on to this bandwagon a week ago, but when Nix gave some explanations I think we can take a few points from this as I counter point to your argument in the following manner: 1. regarding drafting Spiller with Lynch and Jackson on the team, I think we can actually tie the Kelsay contract extention into the same answer: Lynch was one off the filed issue away from a one year suspension and Nix cited the reason for the Kelsay extention due to his character and leadership and said that Kelsay is a "good, not great player" recognizing that Kelsay is not an elite athelete but also recognized that you can't have an entire team made up of Rookies and you need veteran leadership in the locker room in order to make the transition successfully. So let's say that Lynch was given an opportunity to demonstrate that his talent outweighed his character questions, which it didn't and it hasn't since his rookie year and Kelsay was awarded for his work ethic and leadership, something the Defense will need in the years to come. 2. As for Troup, if you look at Nix's draft history with San Diego, he routinely drafted exceptional athletes from "small schools" and guys who flew somewhat under the radar. It is not unsual for Nix to look for guys who were not heralded as draft heroes to locate the men who fit into the type of team he wants. While Marv talked a lot about character, Nix seems to be bent on making sure that while they want to find good atheletes, not at the expense of the team as a whole. And while some on this board may not want to admit it, if you haven't noticed the Patsies in large part do the same. Yes they will take the occasional big name, but did anyone know who Vollmer was before he started for the Patriots? Welker was a one year wonder with the Dolphins before they traded for him, Brady was sixth round draft pick, and yes Mayo was a big name out of college, as was Wilfork, but more often than not, the Patriots simply drafted strong guys who would make the TEAM their priority, something we want to see in Buffalo. Not using Troup and Carrington may be more a consequence of what Nix said about how there are many players playing well on other teams RIGHT NOW and didn't want to see Buffalo prematurely let go of players that may very well play well FOR Buffalo. In other words, the evaluation could not be completed until the season started, its impossible to truly evaluate talent for yourself, until you see how that talent competes in real game situations. And, to that end, it could be that Gailey wanted to preserve his college rookies so that they can be fresh at the end of the season when that is when it will be crucial to know where the development of this team truly is. 3. As for offensive line, they did draft Wang, and I think that's with the RT position in mind. Bell, they could only see on tape, and not much of that either due to injury. So whey spend a high first round draft choice on a LT, which the best were taken by the time the Bills draft by the way, if you don't know what you have in the talent provided from the previous regime. It was ONLY April....again, by the looks of everything, this year was simply to evaluate what was and wasn't here. The plan was to be patient....it looks like that's the way they're going to do things. As fans, we might be frustrated, but if this same approach had been taken three or four years ago, do you think we would be at least much further ahead than we are now? I personally have no doubt, that with a true football GM in place, drafts would have gone differently and therefore, this team may still be in a playoff drought due to Jauron's limp dick coaching, but at least the talent cupboard wouldn't be bare...just lacking the integral components. But....alas.....here we find ourselves ladies and gentleman, at the beginning....all over again.
-
Truthfully, it is much more difficult to assess a QB than a lineman. Let's look at recent history: as for QBs, Bradford is only four games in but he looks like he's developing at an average rate but remember St. Louis started building the lines on both sides of the ball a few years ago, then Detroit, they drafted Stafford and can't seem to keep him healthy despite their best efforts, a few years ago when the Dolphins were at the top of the draft they took Jake Long then took Henne in the second round which looks to be developing nicely, and then when the Browns had the 3rd overall pick they didn't take a QB that they desperately needed they took Joe Thomas. It should be noted that both of the aforementioned tackles are already Pro Bowlers and while the Browns are still looking for their signal caller, they could have pulled the trigger last year and waited, for whatever reason, but you can't ignore the fact that with Thomas on the left side, they immediately got better, without too much adaptation. There is little point drafting a great QB if you can't protect him. That's not to say that a great QB won't make a difference but the question is: are we building for the future or because we want to win now? If you want to win now, a great QB will win you a few extra games, but you'll be talent poor at the QB position in a few years and still looking for Offensive consistentcy. So, assuming the Bills have a top 5 draft pick - which I'm sure they will - i would rather see them take a top tier LT and then QB in the second round because none of these QBs so far are impressing me and the ones that could have that potential, may not even come out this year....so build the lines and LB core, get depth at the line in FA and trade Evans and continue to get FA help on the D-Line so as to make them at least competitive. My two cents...rip away!
-
Okay so do we need to trade Lee Evans now?
BigBuff423 replied to PromoTheRobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The simple answer is: yes. That being said my reasoning is the same as trading Lynch, and cutting Trent. Evans is a very good receiver, but we won't see the reality of his talent on the field because he is only one piece of the puzzle and you can't complete a puzzle with only a third of the box of pieces able to fit. Simply put, Evans is a good receiver and probably could be great on a different team, but right now, it's time to realize that we are demolishing to the foundation, the team that existed before. Let Evans go to a contender and get a second or third round pick for him and continue to look two years into the future. Plus, with Nelson playing well and Easely potentially another good receiver waiting in the wings, I don't know how vital Evans is anymore to this team. He's played hard, and spoken true when asked questions, I respect him and wish him well, but it's time for Evans to exit and this team to find his younger replacement so they can rebuild. Keep in mind, Nix and Gailey stated they like taller receivers, i.e. Vincent Jackson and Malcom Floyd and Legadu Nannee, but obviously won't accept mediocre talent such as Hardy. In other words, it would be best for Evans to go to a good team, where maybe he can win a Super Bowl and for the Bills to continue their rebuilding process with receivers that Gailey and Nix believe are better compliments to their offense.
