Would you trade FJ for a 1st rounder in 2012?
BigBuff423 replied to D521646's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That's an easy answer....YES!! But do I think you can actually get a 1st Rounder for FJ??? No, I don't....I believe the combination of the way the league has evolved in Offense over the last decade, FJ's age, and the ability to get good RBs in middle rounds, you'd be better served asking the question is FJ worth a 3rd round pick...? And to that, again I would say YES!!! Anything less, and he grants the BILLS a better value and service than letting him go for less, just MO... -
TEBOW!!! is a Jet! (finally)
BigBuff423 replied to Buffalo Barbarian's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Regardless of whether you think Tebow is a good QB or not, he's a good guy and I'm happy to see him win and put all the hater-B.S. behind him and simply the play the game with passion....that being said, can you see 1st Round QB passed to a 1st Round WR for the win??!! With Ryan Clady, 1st Round LT, along with McGahee (who fumbled) a 1st Round RB, aand Champ Bailey a 1st Round DB playing big roles in the game...and yes there are many other players playing well who were NOT 1st Rounders, but it becomes all the more apparent how important it is to utilize the 1st Round talent you have on your team properly!!! Tebow has adjusted somewhat to the NFL and to the team, but John Fox adjusted his gameplan to fit Tebow's talents and play to his strengths....and we're seeing a team continue to win!!! Shocker!!! -
Six years is too long...3 years may be the bare minimum, but 6 years is too long....somewhere in the vicinity of 4 years is where a real evaluation can be made....so in my opinion we're half-way through...he's demonstrated he's not willing to accept poor play or coaching, but where we need to see improvement his same tenacity for mediocrity....to see this organization take the next step, we need everyone on the same page with the same commitment to excellence....top to bottom...and we'll see how Dave W. is able to get this Defense to improve along with another off-season to get better talent and improve on actually ability to play...regardless of 3-4 or the 4-3...then we'll see just where this team is in terms of able to compete in the NFL...next year is the tale of the tape: we either make the playoffs or Chan is on the hot-seat the following year, if he's even able to return given the rumor Nix is on his way out after the Draft...

This is a no brainer....Luck is without a doubt one of the best pure passers in this year's draft. If you have the #1 overall, this is who you take. And while you can say that without Peyton look at how the team did....but doesn't that exactly highlight just how importatn the QB position is and CAN be?!! Luck....um, DUH!! That's no breaking news there...

Dont Be Surprised To See Stevie Sign With...
BigBuff423 replied to BuffaloWest's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It's early, but nothing to say San Fran doesn't have a championship team right now!! I get your point, and I'm not picking at your post b/c it's obvious the 49ers could use another level of talent at WR across from Crabtree and it would be a great "get" for them dramatically improving their offense immediately....BUT, they did have the 2nd best record in the NFC this year with an incredible Defense and very solid Offense, without Stevie... -
Very true...it at least shows that the BILLS administration is not willing to sit and wait for things to happen, but are already actively looking to improve. They're not waiting for the proverbial bell to ring, they have decided to look under every rock to try and find something....anything.....that will improve this team! Now, Wannstedt is a much better move in terms of macro level improvements, but Clowney did have one of the best times at the combine when he came out of college and he can be an asset if coached properly and put in the right situation...so, hey, let's see how it goes

Bills won't Franchise Johnson
BigBuff423 replied to Jerry Jabber's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The BILLS SHOULD use a Franchise Tag on him!!! It would give him the money he's looking for, and therefore motivated to play (if not for the pride of it and the contract he could earn) and the BILLS wouldn't be locked in long-term if he has another penalty riddled year due to stupid and juvenile behavior. Giving him a long term deal no matter what the numbers would be foolish, letting him walk would be just as foolish...use the Tag to keep him and pay him so that both sides are "happy" for the year and if his production hits the toilet, then let him walk, if he continues to make stupid decisions costing the team valuable yards then let him walk....but IF he matures in his behavior and has the year of productivity he had this year while staying healthy, then you can consider a five year deal in the $40 million range or more if need be....Tagging him is the only thing that makes sense, and there is no one else worth it on this team right now AND the BILLS have plenty of cap space -
This was simply necessary....not a revolutionary idea. That's not to say I'm not happy about the change, b/c anyone with an I.Q. above a shoelace could see the Defense was the primary reason we had substantial issues in winning games....as it is, the BILLS won three of their six games DESPITE the Defense!! Now, there needs to be significant Defensive upgrades in the Line and LB positions, more O-Line depth, either Easley comes back 100% or you draft a playmaker at WR, and the QB position needs to fall under very tight scrutiny in that AT MOST you give Fitzpatrick one more year with his replacement on the bench waiting to take the reigns or at least you either draft a QB or go and get one that can play right now.....given the rest of the issues with this team, I'd support building a supporting cast and seeing if Fitz can play well enough with his replacement on the bench, just biting at the bit ready to take over....

So, why no love for Fitz? How was 6-10 his fault?
BigBuff423 replied to Dr. Trooth's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Fitz was not the reason this team finished 6-10; he was one component as part of the overall problem....the most significant reason this team finished in such a pathetic way, was the Defense....Fitz did not help matters during the stretch of games when he was throwing INT after INT, but the Defense was the principle reason for this team's failure and ultimate collapse. I no longer support Fitz as being the long-term answer, but I do want to throw a Rookie QB into the lion's den next year either....I would keep Fitz working behind the O-Line while they continue to improve, and let a Rookie QB, or Levi Brown or someone else, learn the Offense next year and let Fitz do his best while this Defense and skill positions on Offense also get better and then let the real QB of the future come in and take over....and let the chips fall where they may -
Jerry are you out there? Your column sucked.
BigBuff423 replied to Original Byrd Man's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The general idea behind Sullivan's article is laudable as any of us believe Stevie's antics and behavior significant hurt the BILLS yesterday. That being said, I don't support Stevie J coming back to Buffalo UNLESS it were under the Franchise Tag. Sullivan is against the idea and says why do it for $9.5 million for one year.....the answer to me is exactly the reason for the article. You give Stevie ONE YEAR at the money he wants, to see if his attitude, behavior, work ethic, and talent all prove to be worth it. In other words, he's had a great couple of seasons in many respects, but also had some serious lapses in judgment in others. By slapping The Tag on him for one year, he gets paid the way he wants, and the BILLS reserve judgment to see if another year under Chan's watchful eye improves his attitude and behavior on the field (assuming Chan and Co. are still here next year). If Stevie's on-filed antics continue, show him the door....at that point it would be three consecutive years and into his mid-20's, plenty of time to adjust his professional attitude to be one to reflect what a great teammate and good players does: play with heart and keep your head in the game....talent will only take you so far, mental acumen must be a factor at the professional level, and that requires a mature prespective. I abhor what Stevie did in light of what his previous behaviors were, but to shuffle him out of OBD at this point to me is pre-mature....paying him big on a long-term contract is equally premature, The Tag is the only good solution here....IMO -
It's going to sound weak, but seriously right now, it's too early to tell. We will need to see how the offseason goes. If they're another lame dick, um duck, in the offseason between no FA signings worth any real value, ala Nick Barnett, and poor drafting then NO!!! This team needs an infusion of talent and sorry, whether it actually be his fault or not, Edwards needs to go. Even if it is a token move to demonstrate accountability is in force at OBD, Edwards needs to be fired or asked to resign quietly to "pursue other career opportunities", but it NEEDS to get done. Then, at this point next season, if we're in the same place with another full offseason, no labor issues to hold us up and no excuses to pin on anyone, if we're in the same spot or even virtually eliminated from the playoffs then another set of changes needs to occur. That being said, if this offseason proves to be positive along with the past couple of drafts and FA signings being good as evidenced by good play on the field and a winning record with the BILLS sniffing (or actually IN the playoffs) the playoffs this time next year, then we can all ride out whatever happens next.....but right now, just a little too soon, although we have a better idea as of today what needs to happen than we were at this point last year.....some good things happened this year, but A LOT MORE needs to change in order for this team to be a serious team in the playoffs....

I gave Nix a "C" grade which to me is an easy way out, but it's also appropriate. It is too early to give him anything more or less. The drafts have been middle of the road, hiring Gailey immediately improved the offense but now with the injuries piled high, it's hard to tell if his system is no longer effective or if the injuries are simply too much to overcome. Allowing Gailey to hire Edwards as his DC is a poor decision, while hiring Dave W. was a good hire, it's hard to know exactly what his influence has been on a absolutely miserable Defense!!! And, while the BILLS have done a good a job of locating talent in the late rounds of the draft and in the UDFA, they have been extremely apathetic toward getting good FAs in here, save Nick Barnett, toward rebuilding a team in desperate need of talent on the Defense. So, drafting is too soon to give him a solid grade or detract too much in the negative direction, coaching has been a wash, front office has been mediocre as it took him too long to fire the previous scout staff but a good hire in Whaley from the Steelers organization.....what awaits Nix in deciding what his legacy will be and if he'll have a future beyond this off-season is what happens with the current coaching staff, FA, and draft....once 2012 is half-way through the season, we'll know if Nix is for real or if he is past his time....

I have to disagree with the original poster: the Defense has certainly been piss-poor and under-achieving but Dareus is one of the true bright spots on this Defense thus far. His stats do NOT tell the story and the absence of Kyle Williams only exacerbates the lack of statistics but yet underscores his future value....I think Dareus had a solid Rookie season all things considered and look forward to seeing what he can do next to a health KW!! Go BILLS!!

Chan talking himself out of a job?
BigBuff423 replied to Paulfw's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Your opinion and I respect that...however, on this board there is certainly multiple juvenile and selfish responses....and while you may not agree with what I said, dislike my post, or simply feel that you can do better - it was at least an attempt at prompting further intelligent discussion. So, thank you for clarifying your assessment of my opinion however, maybe next time you can do more to add to it instead of leaving a simple denigrating comment and running for the door....thank you for your honesty. -
One problem for the complaint department: we all complain when the BILLS aren't winning, we're all happy with few complaints when the BILLS are winning....perspective comes when the season has ceased and time has passed and insight can be had without the flame of competition in the moment. Truthfully, it's disturbing to see all the talent the BILLS have let go, but at the same time some of these guys were sent to other teams happily as us, the fans, were sick of seeing mediocrity and hoped new talent would change the visual landscape of the team we love to watch on Sundays. However, we've continued to have faulty leadership, myopic perspective on talent, and dysfunctional assessment of professional capabilities. That said, I like much of the talent this team has, but there are significant deficiencies on both sides of the ball although predominantly on Defense!! It is no secret a change in the Defense Coordinator position NEEDS to be made, but the talent level has to be addressed, the leadership on Defense is missing, and the Offense needs better QB play with consistentcy and depth on the O-Line along with another very good, speedy, sizable WR on the outside....Chandler is good at TE but we need another of similar size and skill set....and a true KR/PR....so, bascially, we all have a lot to complain about b/c they're NOT winning or in another word: LOSING!!!! Perspective comes with time and objectivity, that will only happen AFTER the season is over...then we can logically resume this discussion and what truly needs to happen (Although a change in D Coordinator and upgrade at talent on Defense seems to be a no-brainer!!)

Chan talking himself out of a job?
BigBuff423 replied to Paulfw's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If this team were 5-7 with a win sprinkled in with the losses and they weren't getting blown out and seeing marks of improvement, this wouldn't even be a discussion. But because this team started 5-2 and have lost the last consecutive 5 games, and going 1-6 over the last 7 games, it is disconcerting to say the least. Yes, this team has experienced a significant amount of injuries, but this team has been losing games even before the Injury Bug really hit...at some point Gailey has to be called to bear the weight of the collapse of this team since being 4-1....I like Gailey, and believe he's done a lot with a little, but somewhere some accountability has to be laid at his feet when this team started out so promising and they beat some good teams only to find themselves essentially elminated from the playoffs two weeks ago after the loss to the Jets....Miami was horrid, and lost their "Franchise Quarterback" to season ending injury, struggled with their new RB who was to take over for Ronnie Brown, and a struggling Defense but has been coached back into being a "good" team and very well "should" have won last week's game against the Cowboys. Miami's turn around is an example of a coach regaining control of a ship gone shipwreck and re-positioning the team in the direction of positive advancement. Miami most likely will not make the playoffs, but they have pulled themselves from obscurity and back into a place of being competitive.....again, for me - it's not the overall record that puts Gailey in a tenuous position, it is the MANNER in which this record has come to be, namely the utter collapse of both the Offense and the consitently poor play of the Defense....my two cents....worth less than that maybe -
Please Admit This Season Was Disappointing
BigBuff423 replied to MacAddict104's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I understand your frustration and I certainly understand your lack of patience given the BILLS "10 Year Rebuilding Process". That being said, it is still quite unfair to already deem Nix as a questionable GM and evaluator of talent. If you're going to question his capabilities you have to take his entire resume into account, which includes his time with the Chargers. And you can say, he doesn't get all the credit for those picks in San Diego, and you'd be right, but then he doesn't take all the blame for the picks with the BILLS so far either. That's not to say he doesn't take the lion's share of the blame if the draft picks turn out to be a bad batch, but he also relies on the evluation of those giving him the information and while it may have been a year longer than we all wanted, and knew should have been, it was just this first draft that all of his evaluators and scouts are his choosing. So, we still need another year before we can have good information as to Nix's ability to evaluate talent and administrate a front office for an NFL team... -
Ok, so we have one set of people on this board complaining the BILLS don't have enough talent and another set that believe the BILLS are only lacking talent in certain keys areas but overall WR is not a position of need. I happen to believe the BILLS do have "some" talent but lack elite type of talent in ALL areas. That being said, while I want talent to continue to develop and improve on this team, I don't want a cancer in the locker room so as destroying what this team has actually built over the last two years: BROTHERHOOD and TEAMWORK. However, I believe DeSean Jackson is the type of player that can change a game individually, see Giants v Eagles last year and see what Donovan McNabb could do with him. So, I think you make Jackson a fair offer, pay Stevie Johnson, and continue to develop the slot receiver spot and utilize the depth you've found at the WR position. Use Jackson as your punt returner, C.J. as your kickoff returner, and find help on Defense while getting depth at all positions, especially LB/DT.....so, pay Jackson as he requires to we can actually begin to build elite talent without needing to draft it and develop it and then monitor his attitude and effect on this team....if you have money to spend on talent, you've got money to burn if you need to cut his contract short...ala Fitzpatrick if his year continues in the downward spiral....IMO

Walter Football Draft prediction: WR??
BigBuff423 replied to BringBackFergy's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
One word: Disagree. This team needs playmakers on Defense LOOOOOOOOONG before we Draft a WR in the 1st Round. I can see a physical WR who can block and go up to get the ball say in the 3rd Round or even one our 4th Round picks this year, but the Defense needs the first two picks between OLB/DE and CB that should be a no brainer!! As for "who" we can get in the 3rd or 4th.....Vincent Jackson anyone??? -
Much has been said about Kyle Orton and there are certainly reasons to want to see the Bills stick with Fitzpatrick, but I would love to see a guy like Orton brought in to Buffalo. I think Orton's skills are conducive to the type of Offense Gailey seems to be hell-bent on running and I think he is some way under-rated. And, given the fact that we apparently are NOT drafting a QB in the early rounds, Orton would be a very good intermittent QB over the next five years while we build the rest of this team into Championship caliber and can draft a QB in a few years and allow him to be eased into the Offense. Basically, if this Defense can get improve (and it NEEDS to - GREATLY!!) along with a solid running game, a game managing QB who can make good decisions can drive this team into the playoffs and who knows, maybe a Super Bowl while the rest of the team improves allowing the most important position on the field develop. Just my opinion....
-
The problem with arguing for drafting a QB by using St. Louis, Tampa, et al. is that those examples spent high first round draft choices on their Offensive line for at least a couple years BEFORE they drafted their franchise QB. Now, I'm not saying I don't trust Buddy and company to know whether to draft a QB at #3 but I don't think you can look at the other franchises and say, "Well, it worked for them so it should work for us" without taking into account how they drafted in the previous two to three years. I realize that may not be a popular opinion but........just sayin'...

Do you take a chance on Jake Locker?
BigBuff423 replied to bisonbrigade's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The point I'm making is that while we don't have a Pro Bowler at that position between Evans and the emergence of Steve Johnson and Parrish having the year he had up to his injury, not to mention how well the others played when given the opportunity such as Nelson and evan Jones, we were getting production out of the WR position as opposed to nearly every other position that was seriously lacking...but if you feel differently that's up to you....and all of this without Marcus Easely whom everybody loved on draft day getting his foot on the field once during the season -
Do you take a chance on Jake Locker?
BigBuff423 replied to bisonbrigade's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Jake Locker in the 3rd would be all right and in fact I think it would be a good decision to make, allowing him a few years to develop while Fitz took the Offense and made all the pieces better....did Rodgers some good and I think Locker has the talent, but needs to develop the mental aspect of the game. He's played in a Pro Style offense so he's got a good start but this team needs Defense first two rounds, if he's stil there in the 3rd I think we should pull the trigger...but hey, whatever, except for WR there's no place this team couldn't get better. -
My opinion is Dareus in the 1st and then look at Locker in the 3rd, if he's still there. Truth is we do need a long term solution to QB, Locker played in a Pro style offense and with Fitz playing well, there's no need to rush Locker into the mess for a year or two (assuming there's football in 2011). In fact I would prefer a 3rd round QB if indeed it were Locker: he has the physical tools and yes, he did have a train wreck for a surrounding cast of characters, so giving him some time to learn and develop only means he'll get better AND with Gailey able to make the most of QBs, Locker would seem to be able to greatly improve and adjust to NFL speed while having experience in a Pro style offense. As for 1st pick, it should be Defense, hands down, and NO LBs are worthy of a pick at 3, now if the Bills trade down, LB might be an option, but if we stay at 3, Dareus should be the pick b/c he can play 3-4 end or 4-3 DT thereby making him a perfect fit for our "hybrid" defense for now and can fit into the 3-4 when it becomes more "full-time"...
