Mark Carrier named Bills Player Engagement Director

But, do you have the required qualifications? His credentials include that he was a long-time NFL player... -
Bills FA Strategy - Bargain Hunting
OldTimer1960 replied to Weatherman's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I could understand an argument that a 1, 2 or 3 pick could be used on a WR. Yet, I could see an argument for DE, CB, OL (backupOT/Possible starting OG), TE, etc. I think this year especially they will want to go with their BPA at each of the first 3 picks. Picking very late in the rounds, it would be prudent not to reach to fill any needs. Understand, thanks. -

What has John Ross done in the NFL? He caught 2 passes last season and has 51 total for his career. I’m sure that as a high draft choice the Bengals gave him lots of opportunities to earn his way onto the field. -

Agree that the pass rushers are drying up in FA. I’m not sure that there will be a pass rusher whose value lines up with the Bills late first round pick, either. We are aligned that a vet WR, if affordable, would be valuable for depth at the position. I’ll be pleasantly surprised if they can afford even a modest free agent signing. Maybe they can... -

I don’t think anyone is arguing that the team doesn’t need some WR depth beyond the starting 3. However, I think the only path to a good WR who could step into the lineup seamlessly in case of injury is an early draft choice (this year). I don’t think that they can reasonably afford to bring in a vet FA that fits that description this offseason. Maybe I am wrong, but I think any significant FA $ is likely to be needed elsewhere (CB or DE I am thinking). I am not necessarily saying to draft a WR in the first two rounds, but I could understand if they need to for quality cheap depth. -

Agreed that depth at WR is needed. I don’t think we need starter level player there though. Now, if you want to draft a slot WR that can be ready to replace Beasley when he retires, I could see doing that as early as round 2. -

I think that Beasley and Davis were both playing hurt against KC and Brown had been out several Agnes with injury. -

WR2? I think that is Gabe Davis. -
It looks like Bills Management thinks it is the RBs.

That would be "think he is decent" and I do. He is not Barry Sanders, but he can be effective as he was in his rookie year at 5+ yards/carry. Watch his rookie highlights and tell me he can't be at least part of the answer with decent blocking. -
Question is are either of them worth trading 2nd or 3rd to move up for? Phillips has a lot of injury history and even quit football at one point. Not sure if Ossai is that good or not.
-
Disagree - I think that Antoine Winfield was very good and had a long NFL career. I don’t think Moore ok Toney will be around late in round 2. I would add CB as possible BPA as well.

Bills a rumored suitor for Kareem Hunt trade

I wouldn't think that Hunt is a culture fit after he hit that woman on video. -

OldTimer1960 replied to Albany,n.y.'s topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
How many times did both RBs have to elude tacklers in the backfield? Many times was my perception. The OL did not have a lot of continuity last year with Feliciano out for first half of season, Ford moving from T to G and then being injured, Williams taking over early from Ford and Morse missing time with injury as well. That could have affected run blocking. I agree, it would be great to have a super-fast back, but I don't think that would have changed many of the negative run plays last year as they would still have had to dodge defenders in the backfield. Yes, maybe a bit quicker start with exceptional decisiveness might sneak through a few more small holes before they close, but I don't think Chris Johnson in his prime would have been very effective with the run blocking the BIlls had last year. Was it injuries/lack of continuity? Was it scheme? Was it the OL talent itself? Was it the RBs? I don't know, but I think both Bills backs can be decent NFL backs given some blocking. -
Bills re-sign Feliciano
OldTimer1960 replied to Buffalo_Stampede's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I’ll give you that - this line was jumbled all year due to injuries. Feliciano missed first 7 or 8 games, Mitch Morse was injured, Ford played hurt then finally went out... -

I guess, but if Singletary played well as a rookie and not last year, what was the reason? -

Even bruising RBs need some blocking to get a head of steam up. If the plan is to find a power back to fight for a yard after being hit 2 yards behind the LOS, then I don’t agree. -

Boy, I guess that I think that Singletary is better than that, but I have been disappointed with his hands in the passing game. If they dump Singletary like you suggest, who is playing RB besides Moss? Do you think they are in the market for a RB in the draft? -

OldTimer1960 replied to Buffalo_Stampede's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Happy they have him back, but I agree that I don’t see how this improves the run game, unless they think the problem was mostly due to injuries last season. -
I’m not as down on Knox as some here and I don’t see a TE who will be available in the draft that is likely any better than who they have. Additionally, if you get a TE who catches tons of passes, those receptions will be taking away receptions from Diggs, Beasley or Davis as they already are very unbalanced in pass to run ratio. I would love a top TE here, but I don’t want to allocate too much $ or draft capital to the position, either, unless you can get a true game changer and there are only a handful of TEs fitting that description.
-
Unfortunately, the DE class is kind of so-so and late in round 1 it will have been pretty picked-over. At 30 for DE, I think you can find low floor/high upside guys like maybe Jason Oweh (who had 0 sacks this year) or maybe Azeez Ojulari - or you can find an edge setter like Carlos Basham. I think you’re lucky to find as good a prospect as Shaq Lawson was this year and that late. I suspect that there will be better players available at other positions than DE.
-
While I am in the minority who value RBs, I don’t think that the Bills’ run game woes are attributable to the backs that they already have. Unless you can find Barry Sanders in his prime, the OL run blocking needs to improve in order to have a better run game. Way too many times, Moss and Singletary were hit or trying to avoid contact behind the LOS. A his end FA or draft pick at RB doesn’t solve that problem.

Breaking: Daryl Williams signs 3 year extension
OldTimer1960 replied to BillsMafi$'s topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I love this and the Milano re-signing. Two would-be holes closed before they were created. They certainly have spots where they could upgrade or add depth (DE, CB, OL depth or improvement, TE), but they really are in a position to take their highest graded players in each round of the upcoming draft regardless of position. -

Except the Bills are very tight on cap space and they haven’t even opened the Brinks truck for Allen yet. -

Where would you play Collins? He is big enough to play 4-3 DE, but is he good enough there for pick 30? I know the league is moving more and more to positionless D, but I guess that make me uncomfortable. I am in the group that thinks RBs are NOT a dime a dozen, but I think the Bills’ OL is a much bigger problem in the run game than Singletary and Moss were. I think you would be wasting a year or more of the short RB career of a top back behind this OL and that is before we know if they will lose one or more starting OL in FA.
