I think that is pretty short-sighted and I don't expect that any of the draft eligible QBs will be completely ready to play right away. The NFL is a big step up in competition and each player is likely going into a scheme he never played before.

He obviously hasn't watched Taylor play much.

A few thoughts about the Patriots game
OldTimer1960 replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I have respect for Taylor's effort, but he just isn't very good. You can't be a serious playoff contender when you know it is game over as soon as you fall behind by 7 points. i know that there are other problems on offense besides Taylor, but he is the QB and in two games against the Pats, the offense scored 12 total points (heck, the defense scored 7). I'll grant that the O should have had a TD on the Benjamin play before half, but that would take the offense's total to 16 against the Pats in 2 games - that is 8 points per game and that anemic output is certainly not all on Dennison. He refuses to throw to anyone that isn't WIDE open. If you watch other games, other QBs certainly fit the ball into receivers that are more covered than anyone that Taylor will even try to throw to. I'd take Taylor as a backup, but he is not a quality NFL starting QB. it sounded like Tony Romo was in pain watching Taylor. I have never heard another game where the color announcer pointed out so many times plays that went unmade because the QB would not throw it or throw it on time. -
Bills Barnwell Projects the 2018 Veteran QB Market
OldTimer1960 replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I understand your point, but the HOF bar is awfully high. I would be happy with a young player who at least has a chance to become a top half of the league starting QB. i would be less inspired by a veteran like Alex Smith, unless they also draft a QB early. -
I wasn’t trying to attack your post. I think that Mathews hasn’t been healthy all season. He has been a quality receiver in the NFL before arriving here. In his 3 years in Philly, he had 67, 85 and 73 receptions- that is pretty good, even if “just” a possession receiver. Benjamin, as well, has been injured much of his time here, but he has shown some skills amongst the injury time. I am hoping that the Bills keep Benjamin long-term. If Zay Jones continues to improve after his rough start, I think I could live with Benjamin and Jones with someone added with speed. i think that problems getting separation have been exacerbated by the injuries the Mathews and Benjamin have been playing with.

Are you talking about Tyler Keane of Coastal Carolina? His own coach has tried all season to move him out of the lineup. He is only 5'10" 195 according to this link: http://www.myrtlebeachonline.com/sports/college/sun-belt/coastal-carolina-university/article181163981.html if that is who you are talking about, he will be around late in the draft.

R I just don't see that. Kelvin Benjamin has been a very productive WR in this league. Jordan Mathews has as well. Zay Jones looks to be coming on as well. I do do concede that they could use a speedster, but they don't need to use a 1st or 2nd round pick on one. Watkins, Woods and Goodwin have all been more productive elsewhere this year than they were here. The lack of a QB has to be addressed before WR. i am pretty confident that a good QB would make Benjamin and Jones look much better (Mathews as well, but I expect him to leave in FA)

I don't think 1 1st this year and one next is going to be enough to pull off that move. KC now looks like they will win the AFC West, so that pick is going to be late. The Bills' own pick is likely going to be around 20th - especially if they beat Miami today. They appear to have played themselves out of a shot at a good QB prospect.
-
I'm afraid that you are right. It is going to take a very high price, if it is even possible to find a willing trade partner. I think FA may be their best option to find a serviceable QB.

Do the Bills Make the Playoffs?
OldTimer1960 replied to billsfan2298's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Not much chance and no upside to sneaking into the playoffs just to get dominated by a far superior opponent. This is team is not really talented enough to be a real playoff threat and sneaking in would only set the rebuild back further. I hope someday to see a good team that makes the playoffs and is a legitimate threat to win the Super Bowl. This team has way too many holes to be legitimate playoff team. -
Welp, don't count on getting a good QB prospect this draft after today's monumental win over the mighty Colts...
-
This weekend with Bills' meaningless win and KC seemingly rediscovering their offense put a big dent in their ability to trade up. when the Bills need to win, they can't get a break from referees. Today, they ended up with a meaningless and damaging win because of a bogus call by officials that wiped out Indy's 2 point conversion. it is hard to fathom how big a set back this really is - the playoff drought continues endlessly.

How much longer does McD get?
OldTimer1960 replied to The juice's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
THIS is a candidate for worst thread of the year... EVERYONE knew that the Bills were not contenders going into the year. They have overachieved by a wide margin. McDermott should stay at LEAST 3 years. -
Obligitory Peterman v. Taylor against Miami Thread
OldTimer1960 replied to Woodman19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Well, I'd rather see Peterman. I have low expectations that Peterman can be the answer at QB, but I am sure that Taylor is not the answer unless you have the an all-time great defense and only need to score 14 a game to be a contender. -
Colts at Bills 2nd Half Thread
OldTimer1960 replied to BuffaloBill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Another HUGE step back. Dreading yet another year in 2018 without an NFL QB. -
WR does not matter until they find a QB. Benjamin, Mathews and Jones with Clay and O’Leary at TE is adequate. Get a decent QB prospect and the look for a wr with some speed in FA or middle of draft. Don’t forget that the D need DL, 2 LBs and some DBs. Still, I’m a convert - whatever they have to spend to find a good QB prospect should trump all other needs.

The Talk in Scouting Circles: Bills Love Sam Darnold
OldTimer1960 replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in College Football
It is nice that they love Sam Darnold, but if he goes into the draft, they are already out of reach and a few misguided and meaningless wins against Colts and Dolphins will take them further out of reach. i am not saying “tank”, but any wins the rest of the year undermine their ability to improve. -
You are OLD! I think that was 365 days ago! Sadly, I am old enough to EASILY remember Ryan Leaf being talked up.
-
I am with you there. I'd like to see them move up for a truly good QB prospect, eve if it costs both 1st round picks and possibly more. I am just worried that they could get shut-out in that process and end up with a consolation prize. A LOT of their Trade-up-power hinges on them and KC finishing the season weakly. I hate wanting them to lose, but the fewer meaningless games that they win down the stretch the better. Hopefully, they can find a way to play well enough to give us hope, but still lose.
-
They do have extra pick in rounds 1&2. Let's say that they end up with the 15th and 20th picks in round 1 - (could end up higher or lower depending how they and KC finish. In an average year those picks might get you one pick in the top 5 - if you can find a trade partner. But, given the perception that this is a strong QB class, teams at the top may want to stay there and pick a QB themselves and other teams wanting to trade up will inflate the price to move up.
-
There has to be a quality option to take or there is a reason not to take a QB. Just because we want to believe that this is a deep and talented QB class, does not necessarily make it so. if none of Rosen, Darnold, Jackson or Mayfield are available, I think we may be out of luck and have to take a desperation shot on someone else later in the draft.
-
I would be happy if they could get Jackson or Mayfield, but I think they will have to trade up for a shot at either.
-
I haven’t seen enough to have an opinion on him, but it strikes me that folks are looking too deep because the Bills’ are SO desperate to find a real NFL starting QB. This might be an exceptional class, but it is TRULY rare to find even 3 good QB prospects in a single draft, I can’t believe that ther are 5 or more in this class, no matter how much we want that to be the case. They really MUST get a QB, but they are going to be out of range for a great prospect - they are gonna have to settle on someone who has some redeeming qualities and some flaws and hope that works out.
-
I am not arguing that Rudolph won’t go in the first, just that he seems to be a consolation prize rather than a great prospect.
