7 Bills players that are trending up and down (per Joe B)
BADOLBILZ replied to JohnNord's topic in The Stadium Wall
Yep.......having the ball two less times hurt..........but the Chiefs put up 120+ more yards with those 2 drives and 2 of their drives were stopped only by the clock(end of first half and regulation). But they also gifted the Bills with two unforced errors.......a missed field goal and extra point...........if they just convert as expected the Chiefs win in regulation. The Bills didn't get the coin luck but they also weren't the better team that day............they made a late run lead by a great performance by their QB and almost stole one. But 3 quarters of having to defend both the run and pass against the hottest offense they could have run into took the ability to finish out of the back 7 of their defense. The Bills coaching staff played them into a close game with some conservative offensive play calling in the 3rd quarter and it was as if they couldn't see the stress and exhaustion that was putting on the back 7 of their defense. I fail to see how Tre White makes a difference when it was the 180 yards on the ground......much of it by Mahomes scrambling after not being able to find an open receiver...........that hurt them more than anything. White would have been just as gassed as Jordan Poyer at the end of that game. -

I follow college football..........and acutely the Miami HS prospects like Cook. He's good and I am sure he will fill his role fine. But Cook is just a RB. Alvin Kamara is also just a RB. If they could move out to the boundary and be like a Diggs or Davis they would have........that's where the money is at. And with the exception of Cooper Kupp.........slot receivers aren't much harder to find than RB's......so whether it's true or not that Cook or Kamara could be a slot receiver........it's not the game changing dynamic that people expect(especially people pining for the LONG lost days of Thurman Thomas and 260# LB's who ran 5 second 40's). In truth, the Bills should probably also be playing Diggs a lot more in the slot like the Rams do with Kupp instead of playing a far lesser talent like McKenzie(for example)......... but they simply don't those much more valuable boundary options to do so. The stats about RB's in the pass game don't lie.......a completion to a good slot receiver generally yields 2-3 more yards than one to even the best pass receiving RB like Kamara or McCaffrey. This is why "3rd down backs" are basically extinct. Initially having a RB who averages 8 yards per reception will cause a little friction in the jeans of RB thirsty Bills fans but the underlying opportunity cost of dumping the ball down a lot instead of pushing it further upfield adds up. -

The Chiefs were far superior to the Bills offensively in the divisional game...........you should probably look at the box score rather than going from memory. https://www.espn.com/nfl/matchup?gameId=401326633 130 more total yards is A LOT more. Dominated the Bills on the ground........180 yards rushing.........including Mahomes outrushing Allen and averaging 10 yards per carry doing it. Passed for significantly more yardage than Buffalo and had a much better 3rd down conversion %........which was very much a factor of Mahomes running the ball so effectively. The Chiefs basically only trailed the Bills for part of the first quarter and what? 1:13 seconds or so at the end of regulation? The Chiefs controlled the game...........the ending might "have been rendered moot" had Chiefs made the very makable field goal right before halftime. Josh Allen played great and the Bills almost snuck out of there with a win but they absolutely did not outplay the Chiefs on either side of the ball. -

And nobody thinks regular season intensity is like playoff intensity. One thing Bills fans won't admit is that the Bills just ran into the hottest offense in the NFL that week. The misconception is that the Bills were the best offense in football in that moment..........they had played a great game the week prior..........but the Chiefs had been lighting it up for the prior 6 weeks. They averaged 38 points in the 5 meaningful games(they sat starters in finale) prior to playing Buffalo. -

I'm not all-in on that approach. Moving up for a franchise QB? Sure. Moving up for the 5th CB on the board in round 1 when you play a system that doesn't put that players proven strengths(man coverage) to ideal use? Eh. And trading back and back and back to get a RB in round 2 is still picking a RB in round 2. People love them some runnin' bax but they impact fantasy football a lot more than actual game results. A lot of folks can't wrap their heads around it but throwing the ball to an actual WR produces more in the long run than dumping it off to even the best receiving RB. And when the playoffs arrive the LOS gets a lot more hotly contested and if you are wedded to running the ball because you want to use your star RB.......there is a good chance you are going home early. Ask the Saints how having to feed Alvin Kamara in the playoffs worked out. The Cody Ford trade-up raises the important question of whether NEED itself is clouding how the board is stacked in the first place. How does Cody Ford.........with glaring athletic concerns.........end up in the Bills top 40 overall prospects? If you aren't thinking about needing a player at a certain position..........maybe you grade players more objectively. -

Doesn't work that way, obviously. White played in the AFCCG the year prior and they were blown out by halftime. Also, the Chiefs played that divisional game without their best DB(Tyrann Mathieu) as well. -
Big difference between being a player whose employment/career/hard work are on the line after putting their mind and body thru the rigors of preparing for and playing in an NFL season............and being a fan. Like ham and eggs.......as Mike Leach would say.........committment versus involvement. For instance..........I guarantee there were some young players on the sidelines whose mind IMMEDIATELY went to the playoff money they where going to get for advancing to the AFCCG when Davis caught that TD with 13 seconds left. Poof.......$65 grand down the f*cking drain. For them there are real life implications in snatching defeat from the jaws of victory in the playoffs...........for fans it's just personal frustration and self pity etc..

Do people actually have a straight face when they are saying Elam and Cook were just BPA's they would have taken if it weren't a perceived "need"? They were players at positions they wanted to address first........and what they considered the BPA's at those positions second. Like when they "need(ed) a tackle" when they traded up for Cody Ford. Or the two other RB's they selected early since 2019. The better a roster gets the more obvious it is when players are selected for need...........the problem is maintaining the same or close to the same level of talent once you've found and paid the QB. -

I'm sure some people did feel that way............expectations are always high for 1st round picks..........and each prior 1st rounder under Beane has been a day 1 starter. But Kupp is primarily a slot receiver. Elam was never likely to be starting in the slot. -

I hope you are right........he turns 25 this season.......it's reasonable to expect a player at that age already to hit his stride as a pro sooner than a guy who is drafted at 20-21. I just didn't see the dynamic pass rush ability at Wake when the other draftable talents he was playing against were typically 2-3 years younger. I don't believe in the "exactly what a team like this can afford to do" notion of the draft. To me.........the draft is an ongoing process of roster strengthening/building and not just an annual event to address needs...........particularly the early rounds. A couple seasons ago KC took Clyde Edwards Helaire in round 1 because "the could afford to"............you can bet they wish they had that one back. The difference between good and bad rosters in the NFL is not nearly as significant as some fans think. You can never afford to treat a pick like it's a luxury.........you always gotta' be looking for difference makers........players who can win matchups. Whether Elam is that or not is questionable. He's an athletic man corner..........but he hasn't played much zone. He's tall.......but he's also short armed. He has a rep as a bad run support guy. He doesn't check all the boxes like Tre White did coming into this system. -

I don't agree with that..........CB in a zone system like the Bills play is at the bottom of the premium position list. If they get consistent pass rush they should never need first round corners in this defense. I know people assume you can't "mix in" man coverage without having first round CB's but that's not true. I will say that I didn't care for the Basham pick but Rousseau was definitely the right call. -

Yeah..........but if it takes Elam 8 weeks to not be a liability...........and by then White, Jackson and Johnson are all good.........then it would have negated the value of drafting Elam for need. Which is almost always the problem with drafting for need..........the player is rarely ready to step into an uncontested or lightly contested situation and play that large of a role on a contending team. Best scenario is to fill your needs in UFA or within...........and then if you draft a player you hope can start, they have a veteran that they have to compete with for the job. That puts the focus where it belongs......competing against an opponent rather than themselves. -
Where and when did Brandon Beane say this? Just last week Brandon Beane said Shakir was a slot receiver and that they were thin outside and looking.

1) It's tough love. Your male authority figures should have taught you this. A common problem with mama's boys is they tend to have a bad mix of elevated female emotion(a purposeful trait for a mother) and the male desire for results. 2) It says that I think first and therefore I don't dwell emotionally about a disappointing sports result.........an hour and a half after "13 seconds" I was sleeping soundly and was on to the draft the next day and looking forward to the next step in the journey. You "feel" first and then can't let an essentially meaningless past result pain you months or years later. (See item 1)

There are also many Bills fans.............the vast majority in fact............who wouldn't feel compelled to record or watch a replay of a game whether they won or lost. The "I wear my heart on my sleeve about ultimately meaningless things in life and I'm proud of it" crowd think that they are the majority though. They are not. Like I said.........the journey is the reward.
-
Man you really struggle to understand things........it's a shame. They aren't masochists...........they are kicking irrational people like you in the balls........unintentionally or otherwise..........by not treating Bills game results like they are anything more than entertainment. The 13 second jersey is hilarious. The journey is the reward. Learn that and stop crying about negativity. It's very negative of you.

Until the last month of the season the Bills were the worst pass blocking unit in the league............and they still were among the very worst at allowing pressure on their QB at the end of the season. Using Josh Allen like RB1 out of desperation down the stretch limited the ability of the opposing defense to pin their ears back........muting the pass rush.........and the Bills were aware that is how it works..........it's why they ran him hard in the first KC matchup. They will put hard miles on him like a rented mule in big games. And that's fine..........but you can't then lose to Jacksonville when you want him to win from the pocket. QB's running the ball take the teeth out of all defenses.........it's also something the Chiefs knew would negate some of the strengths of the Bills defense in the playoffs..........which is why Mahomes was tucking and running on 3rd down instead of forcing the ball into coverage. He actually had a better day rushing than Allen in that divisional round game.

Shaq wasn't a culture guy. They didn't pick up his option because they had to dangle a carrot in front of him.........his MO was being in the airport 2 hours after home games so he could fly to Charlotte and hang out at Clemson on his off day. Dude was a clock puncher until his walk year motivation.

Who cites being first in the AFC in scoring as being #1 in the NFL in offense? That's not a thing. Utter douchebaggery on your part. Here are the FACTS: The Bills defense ranked #1 in the entire NFL in 2021. They ranked first in points allowed and permitted the fewest defensive TD's. They ranked first in yardage allowed, yards per play, passing yardage allowed and passing TD's allowed. And they finished 3rd in turnovers despite playing the fewest plays of any defense in the NFL. But you claim that the offense was not only better than the defense last season........but CLEARLY better..........when the Bills were upset by lesser opponents in 4 games where their offense averaged less than 12 points scored. 47 points scored in 4 games...........it's drought-level-defense-of-Dick-Jauron to suggest that the offense didn't cost them home field advantage and that not having home field wasn't critical for a team that was 0-3 in the playoffs on the road under McDermott.

Week 2 of Camp - updates and talking points (OL??)
BADOLBILZ replied to GunnerBill's topic in The Stadium Wall
My great grandparents spoke only German. My grandfather was born soon after they arrived here and 17 years later he fought for the US against their homeland. He married a woman in Germany but she refused to leave Germany and he wasn't going to stay behind so she and his son stayed in Germany. Any day now I am expecting to inherit a brewery from long lost relatives. -
The Bills offense wasn't ranked #1 in the NFL in either 2020 or 2021. So kudos for trying to actually use a stat...........but it is a FACT that you made it up............so you are still just bickering blindly. The weakest unit on the team was the offensive line..........there was not a close second............and there was no comparably weak overall unit on the defense.

Your granddad was a Nazi? Interesting. -
I literally said the opposite.........you are trying to create a ridiculously false narrative that people who think they invested too many available dollars and draft picks on defense are saying that signing Von Miller meant they couldn't have used any other money or even somehow more top draft picks......on the offensive side of the ball. And as usual from most of our resident bickering idiots.........you have no numbers or statistics to support your claim whatsoever. You even claim the offense was ahead of the defense last year when the defense finished 1st in the NFL and the OL was one of the leagues WORST(29th in pressures allowed) and they had bad offensive games almost randomly against the worst or the best teams. I mean.......WTF.........how absurd can it get on TSW? The reality is that the Von Miller cap hit was around $5M for 2022...........which is a couple million less than just the combined hit for rotational DT's Daquan Jones and Jordan Phillips. Von Miller didn't eat up all of the Bills cap space so I don't even know where this vague assumption that every other investment on defense aside from Von Miller was irrelevant to the caponomics of the roster this year comes from.
