  1. Yeah Vlad and Sirles(if he shows well in preseason) fall into that Marshall Newhouse category........maybe a late pick multiple years from now. Even then you need a team with a RASH of injuries to get anything for them. I agree that Bodine and Teller are guys that teams will legitimately follow in preseason to see if they come available for a 6th or 7th. I am interested to see what all the competition does for Teller and Ike Boettger. They have as much or more physical talent as some of the UFA's they signed and have a year experience with the OC(if not the OLc). Going to be A LOT of competition for snaps that's for sure.
  2. I know, I know..........the WR's fell FOR A REASON..........but Cody Ford didn't fall because of questions about his ability to play OT.......it was because Beane is a witch. How often do 5'7" RB's who run a 4.6 40 and have virtually no tape in the passing game get drafted early in round 3? And isn't the Dawson Knox pick reminiscent of the Shawn Nelson pick from 2009? Remember he was the icing on the Eric Wood-cake from the "heist" pulled off by Russ on the Eagles for Jason Peters. Except of course that Knox was much less productive and from a different Mississippi school, of course. To say the least there were some leaps of faith on Beane's half..........at some point you gotta' throw some coins in the fountain for WR help.
  3. Same with Clowney. Ultimately he signs the franchise tender, IMO. Right or wrong, now that they got their LT in the draft there is no motivation to move JC. I think the Texans are thinking SB this year and they probably want to buy another year and see how Clowney progresses and what condition JJ Watt is in before deciding on anything long term for Clowney or Mercilus. What do they have to lose? They aren't cap strapped and if he remains healthy Clowney isn't signing for anything short of top of the market regardless. If the Bills were in the similar situation we'd want them to hold onto Clowney.
  4. Then it was the wrong post to be responding too because that one was about red zone defense. Nobody is saying the Bills defense wasn't good. Now if you are talking about my point regarding the yardage stats being somewhat skewed by opponents having the best starting field % in the NFL..........well that's just common sense. There are an average of 12 drives per game..........if you give away 3-5 yards of field position every time that's 36-60 yards of less territory that you CAN give up in a game. Spread that over 16 games and it makes a significant difference in your defensive ranking wrt yardage stats. Star plays the 1TDT.......the one position in the front that can be doubled by 2 of the 5 OL without putting lineman in motion. The 3TDT is way off on the guards outside shoulder. This funnels the run to the open gap inside between the two DT's. That's OK for a Reggie Ragnuts type or even a Preston Brown type ILB but in this defense the MLB also has significant pass drop responsibilities so your 1 tech has to be able to stack, shed and get involved in tackles so you can afford to have a more athletic type there instead of a thumper. IMO.......Edmunds struggled last year but I also think Star wasn't keeping him as clean as needed. Star just wasn't what he used to be. He wasn't getting off blocks or breaking up the occasional play by splitting the double team. I see people trying to make the argument that Star "must have been drawing double teams"...........well no sh*t.........that's the nature of where he lines up and minimum requirement.........you don't need Lorenzo Alexander to tell you that.........the problem is that isn't the only responsibility he has. At one time he was great at that position. But he was not as good as he had been toward the end in Carolina........and last year he fell off a lot.
  5. He certainly has an excuse for not seeing PT last couple years. Alabama has had some exceptional WR talent.
  6. Ted Ginn was the top WR on a Carolina team that went to a SB. So Beane and his mentor Gettleman might not quite value the WR position enough. It was a one and done season though and all the abuse that Cam Newton took in those years without WR targets has taken its toll. He's badly beaten up........can't afford to let that happen with Allen..........took 59 years for the team to be all-in on a QB on draft day they need to support him.
  7. Clowney is a tremendous player.......he's not the ideal technician coming off of the edge.......his hands are not very effective....... and that hurts his sack numbers..........but he still gets a ton of pressure. His gift is that he is maybe the fastest forward moving DL in NFL history. When used to attack the backfield from the middle he is crazy good. I'm sure McD would love him........and he would allow the McDefense to explore doing a lot of interesting things as they evolve.........and with a more traditional pass rusher opposite him like Hughes he makes plenty of sense even at $20M per. But at some point they gotta' get more serious about addressing the offense. Aside from the potential of Robert Foster there isn't a single guy on the offense that is someone you can count on to beat the man in front of him every week. It's mostly stalemates at best. Which is advantage defense.
  8. You don't think he gets his extension? I don't think he plays this season without one. He already held out briefly last year over the situation and they promised him a new deal. IMO they should have traded him this year. They are cap tight and have other areas of need. And as great as he is, he's overkill for what they can already do with Ryan. Julio's TD's have dropped off because Ryan can't get the ball over the top like he used to. As Brees has proven you don't need a cast of stars to complete intermediate throws. Next year would be a bad offseason to trade him with that loaded WR class in the draft. IMO, no way he nets a first rounder then. Even after a repeat of this past season. Age and contract will start deteriorating his trade value.
  9. Julio Jones and it's not close. This is a critical year for Josh Allen. He and the Bills passing game struggled mightily last year. His huge rushing games covered for a lot of deficiencies but that can't continue. Even if they tried, the Pats and Lions laid out effective gamelans to defend against Allen running the ball which will simply be copied by opposing DC's. He needs to pass his way to success. They improved the WR corps some and if healthy now have "just" a bottom 1/3 of the league WR unit instead of the dead last quality unit that they started last season with. But that's still a sink or swim proposition for Josh Allen............which just ain't how the successful teams are doing it. I love Clowney..........but the reality is that this team has already invested 3 of 4 McD first rounders on defense. The long term play for your team is to prop up and build up your QB. Defensive success is fleeting. That said.........the Falcons owner has sworn numerous times publicly that Julio will be a Falcon for life and Julio seems comfortable with negotiations so I guess that's off the table. And if they trade a first round pick for Clowney they will have no ammunition to get one of the top WR in the 2020 class...........which projects to be a great one like the 2014 or 1996 drafts.
  10. Enough said.........another goal post moved..........bravo! We shan't be having anymore football discussions Hap. Ciao!
  11. Beane traded McCarron and Newhouse for late picks last fall after signing them as UFA's so he's done it and I am sure it's in the back of his mind. Simply not enough roster spots for all of the UFA's and it's likely a few teams will get desperate for veteran help late in preseason when it becomes clear they can't block anybody. And because he's so flush with cap room...........due to both the previous regimes lack of long term commitments on the books AND the trading away or letting leave in free agency of the previous regime's prime age players(Watkins, Woods, Goodwin, Gilmore, Glenn, Dareus).............he has lot's of cap room to essentially trade away for late round picks if the UFA's bought with that money don't appear essential to the roster. Most teams wouldn't give away a couple million bucks for a 7th round pick but I think Beane gladly would. It's not his money and the Pegula's have to be about desperate enough to try anything to get themselves a contender.
  12. Your response to my post about the Bills red zone defense issues and how they pertained to Star..............was to talk about stats driven by their pass defense efficiency.? Bills were the 3rd worst defense at preventing TD's in the red zone. Having to take your highest paid defensive player off the field on 3rd downs AND inside the 20 is not good. I guess you thought it was a time to monologue about something I wasn't arguing about........hence me imploring you to stay on point..........you are better than that........or at least you should be.
  13. They may be able to trade a couple of those excess OL for 7th round picks in August. Gotta' be a reason they are holding on to Vlad, Bodine and Sirles after signing 6 UFA OL.
  14. That's the problem. The blueprint of recently successful teams breaking in young QB's is putting WR's in place that can elevate those QB's game. The Bills are giving Allen a bottom 1/3 of the league WR corps and seeing if he sinks or swims.
  15. I mean jesus christ dude.......WTF.......google.......use it. Gettle-Beane drafts a QB and no WR's in 2018..........then the team has an astonishingly inept passing offense in 2018...........and he doesn't draft one again. On the plus side.........no reason Josh Allen can't lead the league in rushing now that he can run behind an OL consisting of 4 quality guards and a center.
  16. The competition for the #6 WR is almost always the most contested spot on the team. In terms of sheer quantity it's what the RB position used to be. No shortage of #6 WR around the league(or on the street come September).
  17. Senator Wojohowitz has the floor! ?? Every down! Every day! ?ED! ED! ED!?
  18. Ok so the pass defense was the driver and that was so good because of............the contributions of Star? Let's not get that far off topic. And don't talk down the Bills passing offense like that..........didn't you hear that the dynamic duo of John Brown and Cole Beasley were brought in! Worst to first! And no fux given on WR's in the past two drafts!
  19. The yardage based stats are kind to the Bills because the lead the NFL in permitting the best field position to start drives.........meaning on average that they had the least amount of yards to allow in the NFL before giving up a score. They were also LOUSY in the red zone. That's where a DT who can't get past the LOS is a big problem. People think you want to get bigger in the redzone.........you want to get QUICKER in the redzone........penetration is the key there. Hopefully Ed Oliver helps that but the exchange is a pretty good Kyle Williams so it's not 100% gain...........they need Star or Harrison (or another player to maybe become available the way Snacks did last year) and that guy needs to show enough to command some attention on quick hitting redzone plays.
  20. It fell off a cliff last year. He was not providing the challenge he used to for OL and statistically he was invisible. Compare his production in Carolina to the numbers of Damon Harrison when he broke the zero/one tech market when he signed with the NYG. That guy was getting 80 tackles per season AND occupying two blockers and making plays in the backfield..........and even then people shook their heads about the contract because it's not a skillset that is worth that much money. That's why people scoffed at the Star signing. But then he went out and was a shell of his former self. I think some fans don't realize that the starting point of what he was doing in Carolina wasn't even worth the money.
  21. In context those were every down ALL PRO type players that would earn $20M+ with those resumes on the open market now. And a good NT back then was lucky to get $4M. If they were lucky. Terrance Knighton would be a KIND comp to Lotulelei from that period. Snax Harrison blew the lid off of the NT market with his $10M plus deal with the Giants but that dude was not just a plugger he was getting 80 tackles per year! No matter how you slice it the payday they gave Star was nuts. 2.5x the guarantee that the Panthers gave his replacement Dontari Poe. Neither played well last year(PFF rated Poe considerably higher) but at least the Panthers aren't tied into a declining DT by a huge contract. Very, very poor value.
  22. That ain't gonna' sell toothpaste
  23. 1) No doubt. 2) I was anything but shocked that a down trending two down lineman played less than half of the snaps on a bad team. Knew that would be the case. He was in decline in Carolina that's why the signing was universally panned. He fell off even more than anticipated though. The fact that there weren't many FA lining up to sign with Buffalo is part of the reason you keep your own players. Kept KB on the roster for most of a season where he wasn't even trying........but couldn't make it work with Dareus who was. Lord McDermott works in mysterious ways. 3) Hyde on Brandon Reilly: "I feel like he's that (Adam) Thielen from Minnesota type guy," Hyde said. "He doesn't look like he's going to beat you over the top. He doesn't look like he's going to go up and get a ball on you. But when that ball is thrown, he's going to make plays." Are we clear about the value of quotes from players about teammates?
  24. Pretty sure we have a few Vojohowitz's here on TSW.
  25. It's not $10M per. He was guaranteed $26.5M at signing. Obviously you don't see Star on the roster in 2021 because you didn't answer the question. If he's cut after this year.........which seems likely after his "performance" last year........ he will have cost them about $14M per season.
