I wouldn't classify Allen as a for sure resigning. He has to play better in 2020 and beyond to be a for sure resigning. Milano, Dawkins and Tre are the only ones I would say are "due."

I love Henry but he is coming off of a 303 carry season (and a 34 carry playoff game with an other game of likely heavy touches coming) and he is going to command 10 million or more in value with a hefty guarantee. As great as Henry can be I think he is more likely not going to live up to a hefty contract. I think the Bills are better off spending their cap dollars on keeping their own talent and signing a pass rusher or receiver.

I would peg his aav closer to 18 million but 20 million isn't out of the question. You tend to have to overpay guys in free agency.

Baldy's Breakdown of Singletary vs. Texans
billsfan89 replied to UB2SF's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Lev Bell doesn't really have "breakaway speed" but because of how patient and disciplined a runner he is in addition to how dynamic his receiving was he became one of the most productive backs in recent memory. Not saying Singletary can be that type of back but that you don't need elite speed to be a dynamic back. -
Is the President Seriously Stupid?
billsfan89 replied to Warren Zevon's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Considering they were mocking the whole thing years after it happened in an interview out of character I think he was telling the truth. -
The team isn't that many pieces away from being a serious contender but they can't fill all of their needs through the draft. I hope they at least add a impact pass rusher to help the pass rush against the Pats and other elite offenses and possibly another mid-level player at linebacker or corner. They need to add those 2-3 pieces in free agency then fill in the remaining 2 needs via the draft. They can't get too conservative forfeiting a chance to win now in order to preserve a future that might not be there.

The source was McMahon's son in law. I tend to believe it. https://nesn.com/2016/12/triple-h-claims-donald-trump-really-believed-vince-mcmahon-dies-in-wwe-storyline/ -
The Pats retain a top defense and special teams unit, they also got banged up bad on the O-line and had issues at WR (Harry got hurt, AB went crazy and Gordon was ineffective.) I think they retain Brady for one more year and add a couple of weapons and some help on the O-line and take a shot to make one last run. The defense should still be quality and their offensive unit just simply by being healthy would be better (their o-line and Harry coming back is already a tremendous improvement.) They aren't tanking because they aren't that far off from competing. They have a better shot at drafting up their offense and keeping Brady than tearing down their team enough to tank.

Your window to win in the NFL is always very limited unless you have a generational QB (and even then you have ups and downs as your cap situation will be in flux once they get off their rookie deal.) So if you have a QB on a rookie deal and a team that is coming off of a 10 win season you better take advantage of your chance to “go for it.” Now that’s not to say that the Bills need to go all in and screw the future. But you also can’t run the risk of being too conservative. If you have a 25/26 year old player who you might have to over pay but if you can plug a starting position with an elite player for 3-4 years that lines up with what the team is trying to do. You can’t always wait on the future.

I am not the biggest Daboll fan, I honestly wouldn't be sad to see him go if the Browns hired him (although it would prove Steven A Smith's theory that mediocre white coaches will always get hired.) But if the Browns or another org doesn't hire him, then I think we are stuck with him for 2020. I don't hate Daboll but he needs to adjust his philosophy and understand how to better play to Josh's and the team's strength. Which he has shown he can do but didn't for a lot of the time.

The Rooney Rule (still) isn’t working?
billsfan89 replied to wppete's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The reports at the time stated such. But even if you want to doubt the reports as crafting a narrative after the fact. It falls in line with how the Steelers up until 2007 had always handled their dealings by promoting from within to fill vacancies and the fact that Russ Grimm and Ken Whisenhunt left the Steelers after Tomlin got the job further backs up that they were the intended internal targets. I think given the reporting and the circumstances it is a fair assumption to make. -
The Rooney Rule (still) isn’t working?
billsfan89 replied to wppete's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Why? Are there black/minority coaches with mediocre records getting so many jobs because of the Rooney Rule? Please elaborate. -
The Bills only had 3 signings last off-season of 7 million aav or more (Mitch, Brown, and Beasley) the bulk of the signings were mid-level or lower type deals. A really masterful job to improve the offense without a relatively huge spending spree. Even then the Brown and Beasley deals are easy to get out of after 2020. Most free agents become free agents at around 4-5 years experience after their rookie deals expire. Typically you want to invest big money in a player at around age 25-27 so that you get 3-4 years of prime production that complements what you are building through the draft.

I personally suspect they try and keep Spain, Lawson, and Phillips and then add one or two starters along with some depth pieces but isn't looking at anywhere the same activity as last off-season. They have a good team and are looking to retain it and complement it in a responsible manner. I think they can add Yannick, one other mid-level starting contract, and retain the core 3 (or at least 2 out of the 3 depending on what the market for them is) which would still leave the team with a healthy amount of cap space for the rookies and to roll over to help ease the 2021 extensions to Milano and Dawkins and possibly Tre.

The Rooney Rule (still) isn’t working?
billsfan89 replied to wppete's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
NFL coaching and NFL players aren't comparable professions. The Rooney Rule doesn't force quotas or impose any undue burden on teams to simply do due diligence in interviewing one minority candidate for a head coaching opening. It doesn't seem even remotely comparable a situation. -
The Rooney Rule (still) isn’t working?
billsfan89 replied to wppete's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The Steelers were only considering internal candidates before they interviewed Rivera and Tomlin to satisfy the Rooney Rule. The point was that because NFL teams have to satisfy the Rooney Rule they have to do their due diligence on minority coaches and that puts a lot of minority candidates on the radar and opens up some opportunities both short and long term. So I think this notion you have that had the Rooney rule not existed Tomlin would have gotten the job anyway just doesn't vibe with reality that had the Steelers not had to bring in outside canidates for the Rooney Rule they wouldn't have. -

The Steelers only interviewed him to satisfy the Rooney rule. It was reported that they had no interest in hiring him but they were blown away by him in the interview and he convinced them. -
Brady had one of the worst O-lines in the league due to injuries, a running game that suffered because of the O-line, a HOF tightend retired, and their WR core fell apart due to either injury (Eddleman and Harry) or personal reasons (AB and Gordon.) Everything that could have gone wrong for Brady this year did go wrong on offense. I wouldn't be shocked if he comes back and the Pats improve dramatically on offense. They still possess a quality running back core, their O-line if healthy is solid and if Harry can stay healthy and they can add a tight end and another receiver they should have a full complement of skill position players to work with. With their defense and a great special teams unit all they need is Brady to be an average QB and they can win.
-
The Pats and Brady are a team that was coming off of 3 straight Super Bowl runs (thus a lot of wear and tear on the team), Gronk retired, their offensive line was beaten down, their rookie 1st round pick WR got hurt, AB went crazy, Josh Gordon never got it together, even Eddlemen got banged up and their ground game fell apart (largely due to the O-line issues.) So almost everything that could go wrong with Brady's surrounding talent did go wrong. I think the Pats if they can return the same strong defense and special teams units could easily return to contender status with Brady if they get their supporting cast healthy and add a couple of pieces. Brady isn't quite what he used to be but I still think he can manage an effective game if he has a solid O-line, ground game, and competent receivers. I think people are really underestimating just how bad the supporting cast around Brady was and how much worse that made him look. Brady to me can still be an effective QB in the league esp with a good cast around him.

Let's get AJ Green
billsfan89 replied to 2020 Our Year For Sure's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
AJ Green is nothing more than a name at this point. I wouldn't be opposed to brining him in on a one year deal (For a lot of money even like 15 million) and drafting a WR high behind him. But I don't think he is honestly going to fulfill any long term deal he signs. -
Is Tre White worth top corner money?
billsfan89 replied to DuckyBoys's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yes, White is as valuable as any player can be on a defense he should see an extension that kicks in during the 2021 season. -
Allen slammed on ESPN
billsfan89 replied to Giuseppe Tognarelli's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
ESPN's quality in my opinion started to go really downhill when they took on the "Embrace Debate" mantra when they had the original First Take when Skip and Steven A basically created the sensationalize everything form of punditry that so stinks up cable news. Because First Take (Aided by Skips love of Tim Tebow) was such a ratings hit they morphed everything into a policing you take opinion A and I take opinion B type show. Even their existing shows that were established before First Take like PTI and Around the Horn were produced to be more sensationalized. I feel like ESPN in the 90's and into the 00's tried to present a more neutral observational approach to showing highlights and reporting sports rumors/news. But at some point they realized controversial yelling got more ratings and they have gone downhill. I don't hate all of ESPN's punditry but they really are a shell of what they used to be.
