Joe, semantics. When I say let go I mean not retained. -

Trading Watkins was the right move but letting Woods go was the mistake. -

No, not his fault at all. That would be Whaleys fault. Epic blunder -

We can attempt to rationalize his lack of production which is something that his defenders are always having to do. I'm not saying he is a bum or a low quality receiver. I happen to think he is a serviceable # 1 WR, albeit inconsistent and often injured but serviceable none the less. The question for me always was " Is he worth elite #1 WR money?" It always came back to that for me and for me...... No, no he is not worth that. I am very glad that we got what we did out of that trade which was Gaines who was a very valuable member of this team last year, a 2nd rounder that helped us land Josh Allen and huge cap savings that hopefully will allow us to get some players this upcoming year. -

That wasnt a good trade by Beane/Whaley. So you agree, the Zay and Watkins trades were bad. But without doubt the Watkins one was worse. -

Learn to read kid. No one doubts his ability, at least not this guy. What I have been saying for 2 years now is that he is very inconsistent and injury plagued. That is indisputable if you are being honest with yourself. -

Yeah, his worst three years. Remember the days that all the Sammy defenders used to cite the first three year Julio comparison like you just did? The comparison was made basically making the point that Sammy would progress and flourish just like Julio, except......... That never happened. Just admit it, he has been a massive NFL disappointment. He was supposed to be an All pro, rather than that he has been the 3rd and 4th leading receiver ON HIS TEAM with pro bowl QB's. Those are the facts jack -

I dont know if I would call him a bust but he certainly hasn't come close to living up to expectations and the Whaley giving up an additional first rounder was one of the many awful inept Bills draft day decisions we have made specially considering there were a few other better receivers that could have been had if we had stayed put. -

Since when has he ever had a season comparable to those three? He was healthy pretty much all last year and couldnt even crack 50 receptions and 650 yards receiving. Its laughable to compare his career or production to those three. -

And the injury concerns which were part of the calculation of shipping him off. -

Bitter? Does it sound like I'm bitter about Beane trading him away? I am downright giddy that we dodged a bullet by not retaining him, because hes been exactly what I feared he'd been which was inconsistent and often-injured, not to mention a cap cost of around $17 million a year. Bitter ? -

Yes, it happens twice a year and his defenders crow as if he just was named superbowl mvp coming off a 1300 yard 12 td season. Meanwhile his typical stat line game reads closer to 3 receptions 47 yards receiving and a bunch of "deafening silence" from all his defenders who cannot admit that he has proven to be exactly what some of us said all along about him which is that he has all the talent in the world but is too inconsistent and injury prone. McVay traded for him and he failed to produce anywhere near at the level they had hoped he would hence them deciding to lose out on their 2nd round pick by not re-signing him to then turn around and pick up Brandon for even more than what Sammy got. Those that are citing the McVay trade for him as some sort of supporting argument really arent thinking this through too much ? -

You can take Whaley the guy who never led us to a playoff game, to salary cap purgatory and who is now some football executive in the professional Mickey mouse football league and I will take the Guys that finally led us to the playoffs, drafted our franchise QB, 2 potential LB and DB pro bowlers and a number of other quality starters. ? -

The open market also made Haynesworth the highest played defender in the league at one point. The open market often gets it wrong. Woods has been the more consistent and productive receiver and my guess is that trend will continue. Says the guy pining for the days of Whaley and Watkins -

Would I rather have Sammy who is inconsistent and often-injured at a cost of $17 million year or an explosive improving rookie going into his second year Foster at less than $500,000 a year? It's not even debatable, Foster all day long. -
Even though I do believe he would contribute and have a positive impact on the field, I believe his off-the-field work habit, how he prepares for the game and his familiarity with what McD is truly wanting from an ex ALL PRO like Davis would pay immeasurable dividends for the young guys like Milano and Edmunds. He'll find a way to get on the field in coverage situations plus as we all know injuries are bound to happen.

I agree that somebody would pay it. I think if you polled all the NFL GM's in the league you'd probably find no more than what you can count on one hand that would agree that he is a first round talent. Think about it, look at all the teams that passed up on him last year that needed QB's and there is nothing that he did this past year to increase his NFL stock from last year. With that said, again.....Some team would be willing to do it. Allen on the other hand would be a near consensus top 5 overall pick.

Perspective? The irony is thick here. We've been on a complete rebuild, found our franchise QB and happened to make the playoffs along the way. Context is your friend

McBeane Confidence Update
Magox replied to The Real Buffalo Joe's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think you have to have a style of play based off the personnel you have. If you have Tyrod Taylor one year and a semi raw rookie QB the next year without a lot of play makers, it would be natural to have an emphasis on running more so than a team with a QB you feel more comfortable letting it rip some. I think you'll see some more passing this upcoming year. With that said, there have been a number of times where McD surprised me with 4th down calls. We'll see how he is this coming year.
