Look at the list of QBs not taken in the first round over the last decade... it doesn't get any prettier. 2011: 2 35 Andy Dalton 2 36 Colin Kaepernick 3 74 Ryan Mallett 5 135 Ricky Stanzi 5 152 T.J Yates 5 160 Nathan Enderle 6 180 Tyrod Taylor 7 208 Greg McElroy 2010: 2 48 Jimmy Clausen 3 85 Colt McCoy 4 122 Mike Kafka 5 155 John Skelton 5 168 Jonathan Crompton 6 176 Rusty Smith 6 181 Dan LeFevour 6 199 Joe Webb 6 204 Tony Pike 7 209 Levi Brown 7 239 Sean Canfield 7 250 Zac Robinson 2009: 2 44 Pat White 4 101 Stephen McGee 5 151 Rhett Bomar 5 171 Nate Davis 6 174 Tom Brandstater 6 178 Mike Teel 6 196 Keith Null 6 201 Curtis Painter 2008: 2 56 Brian Brohm 2 57 Chad Henne 3 94 Kevin O'Connell 5 137 John David Booty 5 156 Dennis Dixon 5 160 Josh Johnson 5 162 Erik Ainge 6 186 Colt Brennan 6 198 Andre Woodson 7 209 Matt Flynn 7 223 Alex Brink 2007: 2 36 Kevin Kolb 2 40 John Beck 2 43 Drew Stanton 3 92 Trent Edwards 5 151 Jeff Rowe 5 174 Troy Smith 6 205 Jordan Palmer 7 217 Tyler Thigpen 2006 2 49 Kellen Clemens 2 64 Tarvaris Jackson 3 81 Charlie Whitehurst 3 85 Brodie Croyle 5 148 Ingle Martin 5 164 Omar Jacobs 6 194 Bruce Gradkowski 7 223 D.J. O'Sullivan 7 216 Seth Burford 7 232 Jeff Kelly 7 235 Ronald Curry 7 236 Wes Pate Based on what I see, there are 7 Opening Day starters out of that list(Dalton, McCoy, Kevin Kolb, Tarvaris Jackson, Matt Cassell, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Matt Schaub) and only the two most recnt of those are with the team that drafted them (Andy Dalton and Colt McCoy)
-
You left out Dalton, Kaepernick. You can also add Shaun King, Charlie Batch, Jake Plummer, Tony Banks, TODD COLLINS, Matt Blundin, and Brett Favre if you'd like to go back another decade. Based upon that list, it looks like a franchise changing QB comes out of the second round about once a decade.
-
Why not argue that Dalton could have been taken with our 2nd round pick? As per the original post - I don't think that Dalton would have been the Bills next rated QB. My guess is the next QB on their list would have been Gabbert (how'd Jacksonville do this year?).

Fitz Has Possibly Had A Broken Rib Since Toronto?
DasNootz replied to BuffaloBaumer's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Let's be realistic... we're not an above average team. When we got off to our fast start, every bounce was going our way. Luck (and not the kid from Stanford) evens out over the long run, and as luck was taken out of the equation we fell into what we really are... an average to below average team. Injuries suck, but every team has has to deal with them. We were picked to be the worst team in the league coming into the season for a reason. The expectation that we were a playoff team after beating the Patriots (when Brady had argueably his worst game as a professional) was kneejerk, as was resigning Fitz in the middle of the season to a long term deal. I'm encouraged by the play of some of our young players, but we're still many pieces away from being in conention for a playoff run. -
My gut says that Defensive Backfields and Offensive Lines would be the most impacted by the shortened pre-season. They don't rely on pure individual athletisism, and require the entire unit to be in harmony. Obviously, the offenses are ahead of the defenses right now.

If you believe this, an NFL player took out a $500K loan
DasNootz replied to Beerball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I believe this is low. The last figure I saw was that 78% of all NFL players are bankrupt within 2 years of retirement. Understand that most players only last a couple seasons in the league. They take on debt like they'll have long careers, but when it doesn't pan out, they're stuck with a house payement and vehicle loans that they can't afford when working at Home Depot. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/Why-do-so-many-NFL-players-go-bankrupt-?urn=nfl-190555 -
Why Ralph Sold 30% Of The Bills In 2010...
DasNootz replied to BiggieScooby's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm not an accountant or an estate planner... but explain this to me. If his total assets are valued at $1.181 billion (Cash and Team per your calculations), why would they have to come out of pocket at all? You've estimated that his net worth is $481 million in cash value aside from the team. Why couldn't they liquidate those assets after death and still have $68 million left over plus 100% ownership of the fanchise? Why couldn't they secure a loan of say $200 million on the franchise? I would think that private lenders would jump at that opportunity to take $700 million in collateral vs a $200 million loan. I don't understand why they would be in such a cash strapped position that they'd have to force a fire sale. -
Obama blames hign unemployment on huge
DasNootz replied to Gary M's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I heard that live this morning... He claimed that good progress was being made with new jobs in the private sector, but unemployment stayed high due to government layoffs. Isn't that a good thing? Wouldn't you be happy to replace nearly every government job with a private sector job if you're in the business of collecting taxes? Basically he was avoiding the question of, "what should I do now that I've lost my goverment job?", asked by a pregnant woman who was in the process of building a new home. I think he should have told her to get start filling out applications and renewing her resume....as it's not the government's job to make sure she has a high paying job at the zoo. -

They gave up 50 less yards of total offense and 7.8 less points per game. If we gave up 7 less points in every game last year, we would have picked up 6 more wins. They also picked up 18 more sacks last season (Suh had 10 himself), forced 8 more fumbles and had 5 more interceptions. I'd be happy with that added production. -
With the 3rd Pick in the 2011 NFL Draft
DasNootz replied to DasNootz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If I could have added one more post it would have been with Fairley and Dareus gone... -
It's hard getting a consesus pick from the draft board, so I thought I'd tackle it with three possible scenarios.
-
I think he could play either. When I see him, I see Julius Peppers. That may be high hopes, but I expect a future pro-bowler out of the #3.
-
With that in mind, I hope it's Bowers. No doubt Green can contribute right away, but so can Bowers and actually at a position of need. Miller scares me. He's a speed player, and NCAA speed doesn't translate well to the NFL success.

Where are they now... Travis Henry
DasNootz replied to rocwocka's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
$180k per year in child support for 11 children doesn't seem overly excessive to me. Weren't his career earnings close to $20 million? I also remember hearing that he was turned down for $10k in credit at a furniture store in Tennessee while he was with the Bills. I believe Deuce McAllister just filed recently too... After making something like $70 million, he lost a bunch with a bad car franchise. -
