Hughes was lined up well outside of the tight end (#89) who simply ignored Hughes and ran his pattern. Joekel slid over to block Hughes' path and did so with one hand to the center of Hughes' chest. Yes, Hughes had outside position but he never beat Joekel. How is that illegal? You cannot argue that he was hooking Hughes because Hughes never changed his path until he turned around. Joekel also had leverage and was well balanced further negating the need to hold. Hughes was the one off balance.

I don't agree that Joekel got beat. Yes, Hughes had outside position on him but the key is Joekel maintained leverage on Hughes and was moving his feet well. Also key is Hughes never tried to change his path (bull rushing) until he turned around after Bortles ran by. He was easily able to turn around but stumbled because he was off balance. Good play by Joekel. The Robey PI was bullcrap and called by the official who was screened by the receiver's body.

If Cassel plays decently, is that it for Whaley?
GaryPinC replied to dave mcbride's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I would agree with you if he was a rookie or it was one or two dumb mistakes. Even in the second half EJ had time and held the ball too long and was indecisive so I can't pin it on the O line. It is good he kept going and played better in the second half but he is not a rookie and he really failed badly. So many different mistakes, I just can't excuse that or chalk it up to a character building game. I understand where you're coming from and can't say which matters more, we just look at it slightly differently. -

You're partially right except they don't do it continually like EJ was doing. Myself, I don't consider it the least of his problems since he didn't correct it after the first pick. But with all EJ's faults it's hard to tag a "least". I have been willing to be patient with EJ but pretty much my patience ran out yesterday. He clearly does not have the mental ability to handle the speed of the NFL game. Looking off receivers, recognizing blitzes, feeling the pressure and moving away, not being able to throw a pass away on a critical down, staring receivers, the odd horrible throw. I know I've missed some and at times he does better at all these things but really he can't seem to put them all together correctly with any consistency. His mental process/plan/decision making is not there. I am glad they got rid of Cassel. The Pittsburgh preseason game spoke volumes about all 3 QB's IMO. Manuel may have failed us but I'm glad we took that chance over Meh. I do think TT has a mild sprain, maybe the MCL as has been reported. I think Rex is trying to get him some rest through the bye week in hopes he'll be more effective when heeled up. Certainly wasn't expecting a loss in London though! -

No, her lips are naturally that red! -
Agree with you about all this, especially because my view is from the tv also. My biggest worry, beyond the overthinking, is that they aren't doing enough in-game adjustments. You've got penalties and confusion to begin with, do these coaches blame the woes on these and limit their in-game adjustments?
-
I agree but you have two pretty good cover guys in Gilmore and Darby. At LEAST change it up once in a while to keep the QB guessing and maybe lengthen that 2 second release!
-
I didn't see yesterday's game but saw the New England one. The thing that bugs me about this excuse is our cover guys are playing soft coverage at the line. They were like 10-15 yds off!

Haha! I would argue that this is the only practical use it's had post-Chelsea. Um, she is currently the top democratic candidate and no one wants to scorn a bunch of women.

Do we know which coaches wanted Cassel?
GaryPinC replied to eball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I understand where you're coming from, and yes no one on this board has shown any evidence of consensus about this. But to me, every front office, coach, player and fan know success is tethered to your quarterback situation. I find it inconceivable that Ryan and Roman would lie down and allow Whaley to go rogue with Cassel if they truly felt he was a critical #2 given Tyrod's lack of real game experience. The other thing few give enough credit for is EJ's development. If he has turned the corner and taken a big step from training camp to the preseason, is it really impossible given his work ethic that he has continued to master the offense during the regular season? And even though Cassel was brought back a second time, EJ has continued to progress to the point Roman/Rex realized that Cassel's experienced knowledge wasn't much of a factor anymore and his participation (snaps) was only holding EJ back? -
Source: EJ Manuel to start Sunday for Tyrod Taylor
GaryPinC replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I agree also, I think Tyrod's play has suffered since he first injured it and now it's getting worse. I think he's emergency backup this week and the rest is a smokescreen. Sammy's quotes today agree. -
Fred Jackson: My Toughest Road Trip
GaryPinC replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Great article by just a class act and a warrior. Miss ya Fred! I understand the front office letting him go, I think with Karlos and Shady they felt Fred's role would be so diminished he wouldn't be happy. I also think they wanted a younger guy in that 3rd role. However, I would rather they been open to Fred about staying at a reduced role and renegotiating his contract. He deserved to have that choice. -
Shady Listed as Proable for Sunday vs. Cincinnati
GaryPinC replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm not, yet. http://www.athleticbusiness.com/athlete-safety/concussion-protocol-keeps-nfl-players-sidelined.html "Ellenbogen said more than half the players who have suffered concussions this season have not been cleared to return by the following week, and he estimated the typical time for a return is nine to 10 days. When reported concussions in the NFL dropped 36% last season, the average time to return was eight days, according to the league's figures. In 2012 and 2013, the average return was six days." I still think NFL should expand the rosters by 2-3 players because of the new emphasis on concussion protocols. -
A day later, Rex changes tune on approach to penalties

GaryPinC replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Player should get pulled out for a series at least. Your approach is too much as we would lose Larry Hughes for the rest of the year and still would like to reach the playoffs. :-) I would like to see the veterans institute a kangaroo court with fines (progressing for repeated infractions). And Rex lay down the law about it. -
Because all the personal fouls, whining, and histrionics by players like Hughes and Brown bias the referees to both teach us a lesson and attempt to maintain control of the game. Did Rex pull these guys out? I didn't see that. Did he punish them? No, he's proud of them. He sets that tone and players respond to it. Refs will crack down and call anything even close since Rex isn't taking control. Let's hope that changes this week.

GaryPinC replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Truth. Now it's up to Rex to grow as a person and coach if he truly wants to achieve success. I get where he's coming from but in team sports there is a balance between freedom and structure. I also think this is not a very marketable reality of the Buffalo Bills and the FO will do something about it. It made me sick watching the game yesterday, these are grown, talented men behaving like 4 year olds. -

Until our team learns to control and focus their emotions this will continue. You think the refs are going to be level-headed when there's some out of control children who may instigate a fight? -

GaryPinC replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Thing is, Rex seems to think it's not a huge deal because it shows they have heart. What it truly shows is they're mentally lazy. Rex is trying to build a bully. I much prefer the Giants' version Sunday than ours. -
Cleveland Browns are a disaster...
GaryPinC replied to Big Turk's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yep, but the owner has to go first. Starts right at the top. I tell my boy (9yrs old) that sorry, it's not going to improve anytime soon. I should have pushed the Bills on him more. -
Who's going to be the first coach fired this year?
GaryPinC replied to BmarvB's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Roman's as good as gone if our offense continues to shine. Guessing Chris Palmer will be promoted next year to fill that void. Agree with you about Philbin, no way the owner waits until the end if Philbin's lost the team already. I do feel bad for Pettine though. I think he's a good coach in a lousy situation. -
I expect 200,000 out of Hondas and Toyotas, 150,000 out of everything else. Biggest questions to ask are the condition of the engine and suspension and what work has been done? The more the better, if you've kept up the maintenance schedule, great. The other big factor with a 12 year old vehicle is the exhaust. That goes 700-$2000 unless you get the cheap steel installed which typically only lasts a year. At this point holes could develop at any time. I could also bore you with a long list of potential engine work if you haven't kept up maintenance. On the other hand, few if any dealers will want to give you any kind of trade in value for it so you may be better off fixing it if still in good shape. My key is what's been done to it already, engine oil consumption/leaks. I just junked my 05 Malibu with 220,000 miles and enjoy getting max use out of vehicles but would be very skeptical to put that much money in if I was in your situation.

The other thing about Karlos is his efficient cuts. The guy just has incredible timing and burst such that his cuts can be very subtle yet so effective. Let's get Shady healthy then we're going to mess defenses up. We'll have a fast, hard pounding guy and a quick, elusive lateral guy. Assuming the O-line is up to the task. I wonder if the scouts start each year by researching all the "Williams" prospects?
