That was actually Montazeri, not Khamenei (the supreme leader):

Yes I know who the big kahuna is, and the post said it was Khamenei, I did a double-take at that because I'd read previously he claimed the re-election was the "Will of God"...but of course given that many of these reports are relying on Twitter and blogs and whatnot the info could well be wrong. Not sure the source of the article - I'll see if I can find the link. A lot of them are fleeting since as soon as stuff is posted, the Iranian govt blocks them.

I don't know how closely you guys (and girls, Tom  ) are following this but there are some really good sources of info and timelines out there.

From my friends at www.penny-arcade.com (relayed with some FARK info as well):

There have been 5 main sources for news involving Iran and sadly the list does not include CNN, MSNBC, FOX, ABC, CBS but it includes Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, The Daily Dish, and The Huffington Post. To see for yourself, head over to Twitter.com and make a search for #iranelection . Here are some links/pics/videos of the events from the weekend/today:

Some photos nsfw as well as the videos. Depictions of violence.

Right now there seems to be some compelling evidence that there was indeed fraud (like we didn't know). Some polling areas have up to 141% voter turnout.

And, right on time, the crooked finger of power points WEST.

Shocked they didnt blame "the Jews" along with America.

Things have to get a bit worse first...then it will be Israel's turn to join the US

They can't use all of their propoganda at once

Tomorrow could be nuts. Possibly in very good and very terrible ways simultaneously.

Here is the supposed translation:

"Tomorrow is the Saturday of destiny....Tonight the Allaho Akbar is louder than other nights....Where is this place? A country were people have only God left to reach out to... This is a country where every night people's scream of Allah O Akbar is louder than the night before... Every day I wait till night time comes so I can hear this sound and see if it is louder than the night before or not ... My body is shaking... I wonder if God is shaking himself?"

Wonder if Obama will continue to sit on the sidelines. Let's hope that the silence means that he's working on something that will prove to be useful. Yet, it is concerning to me that the great orator has been silent, and is letting Europe take a harder line, no matter for the calls for him to take a more vocal presence. His words don't need to be harsh or provocative. His comments should be directed at Khamenei, which will be inambiguous and couldn't be spun that he's fomenting a popular uprising. That way, he can help delegitimize the vote without calling it a fraud directly.

Again, when both NYT & WSJ criticize you on the same grounds, you may have a problem.

Police beat protesters and fired tear gas and water cannons at thousands who rallied Saturday in open defiance of Iran's clerical government, sharply escalating the most serious internal conflict since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

...

The witnesses told The Associated Press that between 50 and 60 protesters were seriously beaten by police and pro-government militia and taken to Imam Khomeini hospital in central Tehran. People could be seen dragging away comrades bloodied by baton strikes.

Another thing that I find somewhat telling is that there are many protest signs that are in English. I wonder who they are communicating to?

One more interesting thing: If you look at the pics and videos of the rallies today and yesterday, you’ll notice that all of the protesters’ signs are in English. That’s no accident – they’re not speaking to their government, they’re speaking to the international community. And that, too, is unprecedented.
