Why isn't there equality for all 32 teams to host the Super Bowl?

Recommended Posts

I did a quick analysis of Super Bowls where the teams facing off were from cold and warm climates. Defining what constitutes a cold or warm climate is unclear, and there are quite a few fuzzy areas. For the purposes of my analysis, I defined the Bay Area as a "warm" climate.

Super Bowls with teams from warm/cold climates (winner in parens):

II - Green Bay v. Oakland (COLD)

VII - Miami v. Washington (WARM)

VIII - Miami v. Minnesota (WARM)

XI - Oakland v. Minnesota (WARM)

XIV - Pittsburgh v. LA Rams (COLD)

XV - Oakland v. Philadelphia (WARM)

XVI - SF v. Cincinnati (WARM)

XVII - Washington v. Miami (COLD)

XVIII - LA Raiders v. Washington (WARM)

XXIII - SF v. Cincinnati (WARM)

XXIV - SF v. Denver (WARM)

XXXIII - Denver v. Atlanta (COLD)

XLIII - Pittsburgh v. Arizona (COLD)

13 total. 8 wins by warm weather teams, 5 wins by cold weather teams. If the bay area is not considered to be "warm", then it becomes 7 total games (XVIII still counts since the Raiders were in LA), with 4 warm wins and 3 cold wins.

It is not just dome for Buffalo. A great deal of it is the lack of hotels not just for fans attending games but press, marketers, staffs, etc who go to city during period between end of playoffs and Superbowl. Even Jacksonville needed to have cruise ships anchored off coast to have Superbowl.

If you do not believe me look at how many hotels are full just on Memorial Day weekend.

Jacksonville had to bring in cruise ships to get there bed count up to host..

I went to that SB in Minneapolis and the NFL experience was empty all week until the weekend, even then on the weekend it was still pretty thin compared to Miami, Tampa, Pasadena and Arizona.

Did you go to the winter carnival and see the ice castle?

If they ever built a new Bills stadium in Niagara Falls ON then you could see a Super Bowl. At least NF is a tourist destination with hotels, casinos and stuff to do. Buffalo? Seriously, I love the city but lets be realistic.

I know the obvious reason is the weather factor but that hasn't stopped the conference championship games from being played in cold/inclement weather. Make it equal for ALL teams. I think that warm weather teams have a distinct advantage when it comes to playing in a controlled or warm climate.

I know that it's useless to suggest it but some of the greatest games were played in cold weather. How great would it be for a city like Buffalo to host a Super Bowl? Add in that they are a small market and revenue like this would really boost their economy. I don't want to see the Bills become a dome team but that would be the only shot of them hosting such a game. It would take away our tradition and make us a different type of team. Teams like the Packers, Bears, Steelers, Browns and yes, the Bills have forged an identity for themselves as a cold weather team. Why should we change on who we are and also not be eligible for such an honor? We are all part of the same league, we should all be entitled to the same right and revenue.

Cold weather teams and cold weather have contributed to what made the NFL. When the league talks about playing a Super Bowl overseas to globalize it just really flabbergasts me. It's an american game, keep it where it belongs and that is in the United States. Play it in ALL the cities that has a franchise instead of letting other countries earn this money. Our country is on hard economic times, how about keeping the money in house and helping out the country that MADE you the conglomerate that you are?

I always thought it unfair that these crappy franchises get Super Bowl games. Shouldn't the league be hosting the games in the cities that add the most value to the league? Cities like Pittsburgh, Boston, Green Bay consistently field great teams and are big money-makers for the league; hosting the Super Bowl in those cities would reward the cities, boost their economies, and perhaps provide an incentive to others to improve their teams.

(By the way, I'm not sure I understand why people are ripping your post. Detroit has hosted a Super Bowl for crying out loud!! If you stick a dome on our stadium and give Buffalo five years advance notice, they could do just as good a job).

Hey thanks for your input JR. I realize the weather/climate plays a major role in this but there should be equality in dispersing this revenue to the cities that do hold franchises. Bad weather doesn't stop fans from going to games. I don't think championship games should always be played in controlled elements, it kind of takes away from the game and how this league was founded. How novel would it be to see teams play a blood-n-guts type of game in a championship? What is wrong with that? The NFC Central was a division that was built on this type of game. I think that the Buffalo-Miami game that was played up in Toronto last year was probably one of the biggest injustice that the Bills' franchise has suffered in quite some time.

As far as the negative comments regarding this thread, it mostly came from "rookies" who have been on this board for less than a year. I take it with a grain of salt but when they start trying to get personal than enough is enough. I don't understand to this day why members of this board that have such distain for a post bother to even comment. To agree or disagree is one thing but to be a derogatory @$$hole is another. I guess when their parents or wives let them on the internet they feel big.

I'm just curious, I wonder how much mouth you would have in person. I bet it wouldn't be nearly as much as it is on the internet.

In January/early February, warm weather is in the 70's, maybe 80's, or the game is in a dome. Big deal. Why don't you make a point about playing on grass vs. turf? I know when we played the Giants in Tampa, I wasn't happy about the Bills having to play on grass, considering their lack of success on grass.

Isn't that one kind of in the Bills' control, though? There's no reason why they can't have real grass in Orchard Park.

Uh, 20 total.

Steelers - Dallas (3x)

Dallas - Denver (1x)

Baltimore - Dallas (1x)

SB XXVII and XXVIII would meet your criteria as well.

And if you aren't counting the SF Bay as warm, then you add SB's XIX, XXIX & the Gruden game to your list.

Really? It is a rookie "error" to mock your inability to conceive why the NFL would play it's championship game outside in the cold dead of winter...in Buffalo NY? Any reasonble person can spot nonsense when they see it for the first time, let alone 2,671 times. Because you've been around here a few years, those of us who are new here are supposed to humor you when you post these thoughts?

You're taking yourself way too seriously, chief.

Am I suppose to respond to this? I live in Florida but you're more than welcomed to send me a private message. Do you ever make a thread or do you constantly just get mouthy and bash on other people's posts?

Don't take it like that. There's no problem with disagreeing or even thinking a subject matter is outlandish but why the venom? Some people just abuse others and there's no need for that. People can claim whatever they want but I highly doubt that a big percentage of things said to others on this board would be repeated face to face.

I live in Atlanta.

Atlanta hosted the 1993 Bills vs Cowboys

Then again in 1999 the Rams vs Titans.

In 99 Atlanta had a freak ice storm. Shut down the entire city the weekend of the SB. They have not been back since.

I know they have had the Super Bowl in Detroit and Minn. But i wonder if that is more or less a way to throw the economy up there a bone.

Weather plays a huge roll in the selection. As well as what the city has to offer people from out of town. We all know Buffalo suffers in both those areas in Jan/Feb.

Not to mention, what happens if you have a freak blizzard and no planes can get in or out for a couple days before or after the game?

If Buffalo built the nicest dome in the league. I dont think you would ever see the SB there. I wish, but it aint gonna happen.
