Depressing mental floss quiz

I only got 7 right, but that’s not what I’m depressed about. I would have done just as well to stick those fuggers in the spokes of my bike as a kid I guess.

This is the basic market saturation rule of economics at work. Boy am I depressed… I need a beer already and it’s only 8:30.

Got 9 right, only because I pretty much lowballed most. After Topps lost exclusive rights, the baseball card market went in the crapper. Jeeziz, there must be dozens of Pedro Martinez rookie cards out there...

Seeing the Mickey Klutts rookie card...well, that really brought tears to my eyes! :pirate:

loved seeing U.L. Washington...i remember hearing a story that when he was born, his mother didnt have a name and in the hospital looked around and the first thing she saw was some sort of electronics item and on it had the "UL Approved" sticker...lo and behold, UL was named. If i am not mistaken, I heard this on a WPIX Yankees broadcast with Bill White and Scooter back in the 70's

Did you get suckered into the "great" investment of the Christian Laetner cards too ;):P

14/20...I am still waiting for the comebacks of Gregg Jefferies, Ramon Martinez, Ricky Jordan, Felix Jose, Kevin Seitzer, and Ben McDonald

I fell for all of those plus the great stampede for Kevin Mitchell, David Cone, Todd VanPoppel and Wally Joyner cards too.

If you mention UL Washington, you MUST also throw in the "standard issue" disclaimer each announcer made to us "kids" everytime he came to bat. "Now for the younger viewers at home watching, we don't recommend you imitate UL Washington's toothpick in the mouth. That's definintely NOT safe." Of course that's back when kids actually WATCHED a game from time to time on TV, now they just PLAY them on the TV. (jeeziz, I must be challenging Cincy this morning)... back in my day! ;)

No, in fact I hated that fugger even before he went to Duke. THE Nichols School was a Class C team and they killed us in some holiday tournament when I was a senior. I'm told even his own teammates didn't like him. Could have been/be petty jealousy on his teammates (and my) part, but once he went to Duke, I never claimed him as WNY's-own.

I never really got into NBA cards as much as baseball, football and some hockey.

I remember seeing U.L. Washington interviewed before an "NBC Game of the Week" with Garigiola (sp?) and Kubek, and it was during the gas crunch in the late '70s. Joe G asked him what "U.L." stood for. Without missing a beat, Washington answered: "Un-Leaded."

I've never been into basketball, and only collected Baseball, Football and Hockey cards

I just made the joke about him because of how cheap it said his card is worth there, lol

My biggest mistake was bringing my collection to school so I could make trades at lunch. I'll never forgive Adam Oppenheimer for rooking me out of a Mark McGuire and a Jose Canseco for some no name pitcher from the Pirates. I was so mad when I got home a realized that I had been fleeced.

Probably Doug Drabek (he was just big enough of a name to entice some interest, but ultimately sucked).

You think that's bad a buddy of mine from Jimmytown just emailed me about giving one of our friends the scroogie back in the day for a Mike Schmidt rookie. He traded a Tony Fernandez rookie card for Schmidty!!!! :pirate: Straight up!!! WTF???

Anyone remember owning any of those cards?

As a klid I had the George Brett card.

I had/have most of the 80s and early 90s cards. I was suckered into the great Vince Coleman farce as a kid.

Shiv the MOFO? :P

Somebody send up the Dean-signal!

I probably stuck enough of those cards in the spokes of my bike to have fully funded my retirement by now. :pirate:

Especially the 1969 Reggie Jackson rookie card...I swear I had enough of them to put one on each spoke.

From that same set, was Mickey Mantle's LAST card...I remember I had two of 'em...where I put them, I DON'T remember... :P

I have most of those cards still. I have a huge collection from when I was younger. We used to play a game where you flipped cards and if a card landed on another you got to keep the card. Well I got pretty good at that game and won my neighborhood's card collection. Now they are taking up huge amounts of space but I won't part with them

Was already an adult when the card craze hit. A friend collected football cards. He had two complete sets of 1981(?) with Joe Montana's rookie card. The thing was to get out before the prices crashed. He used his sets to pay the lawyer for his divorce. No, it wasn't over cards. The skank he married cheated on him and told him about it on the day after Xmas.
