KKK becoming increasingly popular in the US

By YANIV SALAMA-SCHEER

The Ku Klux Klan has undergone a surprising and troubling resurgence in popularity in the United States due to the "hot-button issues including immigration, gay marriage and urban crime" the Anti-Defamation League has said. The ADL, which monitors the activities of the KKK as well as other racist groups and relays their findings to law enforcement and policymakers, view the recent increase in Klan activity in the U.S as troublesome, owing to the fact that the Klan has been relatively under the radar in recent years.

"If any one single issue or trend can be credited with re-energizing the Klan, it is the debate over immigration in America," said Deborah M. Lauter, ADL Civil Rights Director. "Klan groups have witnessed a surprising and troubling resurgence by exploiting fears of an immigration explosion, and the debate over immigration has in turn helped to fuel an increase in Klan activity, with new groups sprouting in parts of the country that have not seen much activity."

The KKK has taken advantage of the phobia Americans have developed for Muslim and Arab immigrants, as well as the growing anti-Immigrant feeling in the American south stemming from the overwhelming influx of illegal workers from Mexico. New hate groups have emerged, and have manifested themselves by holding anti-immigration rallies and recruitment drives. These groups have also been active in distributing racist literature with a new emphasis on the immigration issue and Hispanics, and have been able to effectively communicate with their supporters and publicize events through KKK sponsored sites on the internet.

According to the ADL, the KKK believes that "America is drowning in a tide of non-white immigration, controlled and orchestrated by Jews, and is vigorously trying to bring this message to Americans concerned or fearful about immigration."

While certain Klan "strongholds" such as Alabama, Arkansas Mississippi and Tennessee which are historically active communities have rapidly expanded in size, the emergence of new activity in Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania have created racial issues inside of communities that have been untroubled by such activity in the past. The KKK has also been cooperating with neo-Nazi groups based in National Socialist Movement.

"Although some Klansmen may still hold cross-burnings dressed in robes and hoods, today's young Klansmen are more likely to look virtually indistinguishable from racist skinheads or neo-Nazis," Lauter added. "Today's Klansmen may be as likely to gather at white power music concerts or socialize at so-called 'unity rallies' with other white supremacists, as to participate in ritualistic cross burnings in the rural wilderness."

The ADL has noted that Klan groups have become "Nazified" over recent years. Klan members are choosing to engross themselves in the neo-Nazi subculture.

Between 2000 and 2005, hate groups mushroomed 33 percent and Klan chapters by 63 percent, according to Mark Potok, director of the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate crimes.

Precise data is difficult to pinpoint, but Potok's group counts as many as 150 Klan chapters with up to 8,000 members nationwide. More than 800 hate groups exist around the country, Southern Poverty research shows.

The FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program which deals with monitoring hate crimes throughout the US, has substantiated the claim made by the ADL based on their findings of an increase of hate crimes since 2004. According to the FBI study which was released in October 2006, 54% of hate crime violence is racially motivated, while 17% was motivated by religious bias and 13% was due to national origin.

Everytime I hear anything about the KKK, I think of the Chappelle skit "Clayton Bigsby" and how silly the Klansmen looked. Especially with Chappelle screaming "White Power" and "Woogie Boogie Ni****".

It's really sad that there is this kind of racism here in this country 40 years after Dr. King died.

Even if you successfully affect social change on a large scale (and King didn't; at best he started it), there will always be individual idiots who publicly exercise their right to be idiots.

The problem with idiots isn't their message; the problem with idiots is that there's other idiots that take their message seriously. The best idiot is a marginalized idiot.

I'm not a fan of affirmative action.

But I truly hate the KKK...using the name of Christ to justify their hate and bigotry.

The Klan should go screw themselves.

dude, youre opening a whole new can of worms with that middle statement.

come on down to Georgia and see how people use the name of Christ to justify all sorts of ridiculous crap everyday.

(not that i disagree with you at all about your views on the Klan)

the county just north of me is not only the one that put the "Intelligent Design" stickers in their textbooks, its also the same one that banned Harry Potter books from the school libraries because it turns children to witches and teaches them to worship the devil...

What a great way to marginalize normal people who may be agsinst illegal immigration for entirely legitamate reasons.

Thanks KKK.

meh, no one really takes them seriously as a political voice. they get more protesters than klansmen at most of their "rallies" and the protesters usually only show up about 10-15 strong. they get no press and no attention other than government agencies keeping tabs on them and locking them up. this is probably the most attention anything klan related has garnered in a while... which makes me wonder... ieatcrayonz: klan member??

I really liked the bumper stickers in Louisiana when Edwards was running against Duke in '91. "Vote for the crook. It's important." Talk about a no win situation.

Shouldn't this be in PPP?

At any rate, this type of news will become fodder for people like Ruben Navarrette Jr., to whom every single opponent of illegal immigration is some uneducated, racist xenophobe. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that it shouldn't be reported, but at the same time you know that people with an "anti" position on illegal immigration will now be painted with a broad stroke as begin similar to the KKK.

That's a horrifying list.

Although I got a chuckle out of seeing Private Parts -- at #87. Thus the nut-job moralists want to keep their kids from reading Howard's filth....but not as much as they want to protect their kids from Steinbeck, Twain, Salinger and Judy Blume!!

WTF is wrong with people?

oh man... coming from the north you figure "ok theres probably a few real nut-jobs down here, but most of these people will be alright"

NOPE! they ALL are crazy. theyre the MAJORITY. and they are choosing our leaders for us...

What pisses me off more then the obvious bigotry and hatred is how detrimental this propaganda is to the lives of those who subscribe to it. The Klan often seeks out the most alienated, confused, and abused youth in this country. Klan leaders take these kids/teens in and give them the home and support they so desperately need. It's the perfect set up for the propaganda they will imprint on the brains of these victims.

I'm still up in the air on this. There are a lot of kooky evangelical types around here and there are just as many race-pimps. It's certainly a more politically charged city than Buffalo. I'm fairly convinced that it's mostly a very vocal and determined minority. I don't know, at the same time, everyone I've chosen to associate with (by chance, not by choice) isn't originally from the area.

You can't deny the amount of tension around here, that's for sure. A mixture of the Old South, transplants, race-pimps, evangelicals, Southern Baptists..... it makes for an interesting experience as you can have direct neighbors with values *miles* apart.

No more of a perfect set up and brainwashing that occurs with any other organized group, right?

Surfing through their website I came upon an article that was really odd:

http://www.kkk.bz/weekly11.htm

Since I know VERY little about the KKK (other than what I have seen in movies ... etc) can anyone explain why a group that is known for their extreme racial hostilities would possibly allow this article on their website?

I advise keeping a distance from anyone with a tatoo that reads "88" or "RaHoWa".

Like the old "13" tatoos - M, the 13th letter, standing for marihuana - "88" is HH...Heil Hitler.

"RaHoWa" means "Racial Holy War".

Aryan Nation signs...

hmmmm...why am I not surprised you know this?

Did'nt people like that say Pokemon was evil, too? They also said the same thing back in the 80's about Dungeons & Dragons.

Becuase according to you, EVERYONE who disagrees with you is a racist or a nazi.

Of course not...actually I have disagreements with folks on the wall about drafting players, about starting players, about wether players should be negotiated with and all sorts of things...Recently had a disagreement with ieatcrayonz, and never thought he was either racist or nazi. I only think people are racist or nazi when they behave in a racist or nazi fashion. Why am I not surprised you are so sensitive to that?
