Flip a coin between Far Side and Calvin.

I went with Calvin though, that strip was brilliant on so many levels...

That's how I went on it too. With Bloom County a fraction of a percentage point behind them...

Good list (other than Garfield).  I'd rank them:

Calvin & Hobbes

Bloom County

Dilbert

Doonsbury

B.C.

Peanuts

The Far Side

.

Garfield

Garfield jumped the shark quite a while ago but was very good for the first 2-3 years.

Impossible to really pick best ever, but no question your list is very good.

I would add Foxtrot, Over the Hedge, Get Fuzzy and Pearls Before Swine as some of the funniest comic strips these days.

Stephen Pastis, the creator of Pearls Before Swine, is like the anti-comic strip dude. When Blondie was celebrating its 75th anniversary earlier this year, the creators were doing crossover comics where Blondie was inviting people like Jon and Garfield or Broom Hilda to their party, but Pastis wasn't invited, so he spent a week busting Blondie's chops and decided to have his own party, to which only Opus the penguin from Bloom County showed up.

Currently the crocodiles living next door to the zebra is some of my favorite stuff. They are absolutely moronic crocs trying to get the zebra to fall for their plots so they can eat him, but they keep killing themselves off.
