2006 our 1st round draft pick was John McCargo and we picked Kyle Williams in the 5th round.

Meatball was a pillar of the team during the drought years and made 6 pro bowls and will eventually probably end up on the Wall of Fame.

2008 our 2nd round draft pick was James Hardy (RIP) and we picked Stevie Johnson in the 7th round.

Stevie earned a big role relatively quickly and eventually became our #1 WR posting back to back 1,000 yard seasons.

2022 our 1st round pick was Kaiir Elam and we picked Christian Benford in the 6th round.

Benford has turned into what many would argue is an Elite CB and has earned a lucrative extension from the team.

Could Tyrell Shavers be the next in line?

We all saw what he did in preseason.  Granted, it's preseason... but he had a great game against the Bucs and it wasn't just on the TD.  I heard a stat yesterday that he was getting a ton of separation on all of his routes and in Joe Marino's All-22 he talked about how good Shavers played overall.  He looks like a MUCH more natural WR than Keon.  This isn't perfect because Shavers was actually a UDFA in 2023 rather than 2024, but he stuck around and gained the most attention last offseason and I think a lot people believe he's a 2nd year player.  I think we're all rooting for him, but I think based on McDermott's and Allen's PCs this week he may have earned himself a legitimate shot to become the WR Keon was supposed to be.

Shavers came out a year BEFORE Keon though. He had two years on the PS before he broke the roster.

Maybe it will be Deone Walker who  outperforms TJ Sanders. Only two rounds separate them, but same position and many of us are projecting a very high ceiling for Walker already. Ideally they both work out. Beane took a lot of DBs in the last draft too, but Max seems legit and we need him to be. Can’t afford another Elam and need some high end talent on rookie deals.

Shavers had a very good game but I am not going to get super excited yet about his future with the team. Let him prove it consistently and then we can dance the jig.

I am all for rooting for the underdog and we are due for a bit of good luck with our draft picks . But I don't want to set myself up for disappointment.

If he ends up being mentioned in the same breath as Kyle Williams due to his career with the Bills , we would all be very happy

I would not expect that

But he seems like the type of guy who's a hard worker and a core special teamer.. just blossoming into his own as a wide receiver

Where we could probably pick them up for 2 or 3 years as a cheap number four option... With the occasional ability to play a bigger role

At this point he clearly is a decent number four or five.. when his number gets called he usually doesn't disappoint

I would sign him to a modest special teamer fourth wide receiver contract... He's not going to be expensive and he is getting better

We don't have to worry about that until 2027. He's already under contract for next year.

Sure why not...he's already the next John Stallworth

Yes, someone posted that previously.  LOL.  And while were comparing generational HOF players to those that have played a in handful of games, Max Hairston is the next Darrell Green.

I like Shavers and have beaten the drum for him since his signing, but some of the fanbase (especially on social media) is fast approaching drought-era levels of hopium with this kid. I see a good special teams guy and a potentially solid number 4/5 type. Outside of this week it's not as if he's getting consistently open and he's nothing special with the ball in his hands. He looks like a 35 catch, 500 yard type, but maybe I'm wrong and he surprises.

Mad Max honestly reminds me of Phillip Buchanan in the early 2000s.

Shavers has been with the team since 2023, a full year before Coleman. Also he seemed like a better athlete coming out of high school but lost in the shuffle at Alabama and transferred 2x to show off his skills. Took the slow path to develop and has proven a good depth WR. Time will tell if develops into more.

Like the thinking OP (strange how that works out sometimes), but yeah, as others said, Tyrell was signed in 2023 and Coleman drafted in 2024.

So, I guess, technically it would be more: We drafted WR Justin Shorter in the 5th round, and found WR Tyrell Shavers as an UDFA.

I understand that there's a lot posted on this message board and people don't read through entire posts so I'll just copy and paste this snippet from my unedited OP to show you I already acknowledged this:

I actually forgot that Shavers was signed in 2023.

I was originally going to say this doesn't make a lot of sense bc all the examples you used were one in which a player selected at a later point in the same Draft superceded another at the same position Drafted earlier. And that didn't really fit bc Shavers wasn't Drafted at all. Add in the fact that they weren't even in the same class and the comparison doesn't really work at all.

Shorter was the same year and he is long gone and forgotten. At the time we had three WRs starting with "Sh". Lol

I remember when I thought Rpbert Foster was going to become a good receiver. And then he disappeared forever.

We'll see what Shavers turns into. That game could have been the highlight of a forgettable career, or it could be a springboard to something more. Time will tell.

I've always wondered what happened there. For a while he was a great downfield option for Allen and had wheel like we havent seen here since.  Did he just lose interest?  Was he injured?
