It's simply called the natural progression of a young player.

And it won't be linear, there will still be games he seems to take a step back.

Overall tho, his progress has been fantastic and IMO Poyer has played an integral part in helping him understand both his role and how to communicate properly in this D.

Safety is an extremely hard position to master in this D because of all the disguising and communication needed in it. Poyer said it took 2 years of him starting to finally feel comfortable in it. Bishop has far less time than that but he has the guy who played it at an All-Pro level mentoring him.

Great post and yes, whatever field you're talking about, progression is not always linear. It can happen suddenly, thus the light switch analogy. And there can be regressions mixed in as well.

Remember all the angst on this board about what a bust he was?

It was sadly unforgettable.

Same crowd that calls every player that doesn’t meet expectations immediately a bust. You’d think they’d learn at some point.

I will say that every highly drafted player that isn't instantly successful gets lambasted by a large percentage of posters here.

TJ Sanders and Landon Jackson are getting roasted unfairly at this very moment.

Coincidence he can play fast and confident when he doesn’t have to look over his shoulder worrying about Rapp coming in and breaking him in two? 😂

Cole was also in there behind on the Hairston interception, but saw him in position and looked like he held back. I remember thinking Rapp would have put his helmet in his back and messed it up.

Until this year Bishop's mentors were Rapp and Hamlin. Having Poyer and Tre White in the backfield with him has been very beneficial to Bishop.

That's a pretty huge infusion in credentials and knowledge of the system.

I always said he was greatness potential HOF. Never doubted him. Ever.  Been a fan of his since middle school.

I didn't know if Bishop was a sure thing but I certainly wasn't writing him off either. You never know if a player can meet expectations until they consistently do.

So nice to see aggressive plays on the ball (thinking Hairston's plays, too) after at least two years of catch and tackle (or catch and missed tackle).

On that deep incompletion to Worthy (which was almost DPI) it was great watching Hairston essentially toying with him... displaying for all the world to see that he's just as fast as Worthy but bigger and stronger.

Wasn't someone on this board complaining in the offseason that Bishop looked too young or too pretty to be tough?

Yes, but people on this board complain about everything.

Take me for instance, I complain about people complaining!

I don’t know if the word “bust” was ever used but I saw more than few comments saying Hairston was a wasted pick as his injury kept dragging on. Insane stuff.

Hyde tutored Bishop last year, remember? He was signed (I think to the practice squad) but was never activated or expected to be activated. His role was to help develop Bishop, or that was the report at the time. So Bishop has had the benefit of being brought along by both Hyde and Poyer.

Last week was his 18th start, so essentially what should’ve been the first game of his 2nd season.

Or his 1st playoff game, tbh.

Some mention already of Jordan Hancock in this thread, and so it's fun to point out his only slightly lesser overall athleticism (compared to Bishop) despite his significantly lesser draft position. He also played significant snaps for a championship program. The dude is an explosive athlete and good football player. He just has smallish hands and shortish arms, and probably needs to pack on a few more lbs.

He also wasn't really a great pure coverage corner which is why a lot of people think he was pegged for safety

His tape isn't as good as cole bishops.. despite playing on Ohio State

He is a great athlete with room to grow though

True, though Hyde rejoined the Bills in December so his time with Bishop was fairly short.

Hancock has always been a tweener, for sure. Can play CB, especially NCB, but can also play S. I'll bet he has a future in this league. Like Cam Lewis tbh. Take a gander at Cam Lewis's numbers, they're not terrible:

I'm probably the first and only one here who has had cam Lewis's back supremely lol

I have the only thread on cam Lewis at two Bills drive lol I got to watch him his senior year in high school and been following him since ub

I couldn't be more happier for a football player than I am for cam.. Hancock is a better athlete for sure he has to adapt to the scheme

Shame about that 4th down play against Justin Jefferson. Otherwise, he's been so steady when called upon, all things considered. Even played some boundary for the Bills in his 1st (albeit very brief) start against Tennessee, if memory serves.

I mean everybody will crucify him for that play but like as a former corner I forgot about that instantly

It's literally a better play made by a All pro

Cam Lewis was draped all over the coverage played it fantastically a tremendous player just made a better play on that play

That's something I can live with instantly,  cam is and I have always said probably one of the best bottom 53 guys in the NFL

If you took the bottom half of rosters 48 to 53 which are always churning.. you're not going to find many better players than cam Lewis at the bottom

He literally was playing a darell revis role at UB on an island he has great coverage instincts

I hear you from a competitor's perspective, but on 4th down he fundamentally played the ball wrong. He was posted up perfectly. Just gotta violently rake at it/spike it and knock it DOWN or OUT there, not play it like a WR looking to haul it IN. He tried to catch it and gave Jefferson a chance to make a play on it. Whatever.

That being said: I love me some Cam Lewis. Always will. INVALUABLE depth across every position in the secondary. Such a good football player.

If you take 150 snaps from a player of course you're going to be able to find a play where he didn't do exactly what he should

He literally did 99% of what he should instead of just trying to knock the ball down instead of trying to play it

In the grand scheme of football I don't hold that against him and it means nothing to me

I will argue for cam Lewis all day as an NFL player over a bunch of guys with much more talent

same. I couldn’t believe all the people that were hoping Cam Lewis would be cut. He is one of the best depth pieces on our team.

A lot of Cam Lewis love today. I like the story but do me a favor tomorrow and tell me who’s the defender on the plays when we give up the inevitable 3rd and longs. My money will be on #39

I said in the game day thread that Bishop was a beast in this game. He was all over the field making plays.

That was your first mistake... 😆

If you want people to actually read your posts, never put 'em in the game day thread!

He played a great game last weekend.  Hopefully it’s a sign of where this could be headed.

I wonder how much having Hairston cover Worthy helped?
