Is this just bad luck, or do you have somebody to blame?

I think in the long run it mostly even out. One of the most amazing things about the NFL to me is that small group of guys who can play a dozen or so years and only miss a few snaps over a career. That is crazy, superhuman kinda stuff.

We draft small, undersized Front 7 players on Defense.  I doubt that helps.

We have some older and/or injury prone players we keep relying on.  Doesnt help.

Some of it is bad luck.  Some of it is personnel.

I honestly think it’s because athletes are getting stronger and faster.

I know in the old school football, people assume the game was tougher.  Tougher in the sense of rougher, yes.  But the impact, its 100% today’s game.

You didn’t have 300+ guards who run 5.2 - 40 yard dashes pulling, you didn’t have 210 lbs safeties who run 4.4 - 40 yard dashes etc…

These guys might not get closed line anymore but the play by play pounding, its much tougher today.  Its bigger bodies moving faster and hitting each other.

Even with advanced medicine and training, they are still breaking down.

I think this is probably the closest reason

CBA has limited practice time which has hurt technique and made injuries due to bad technique a little bit more frequent

Get the biggest reason is everything you stated.. the game might not be as rougher like you said .. but the play to play violence is very high because of the size and speed of the bodies

One thing Im coming around about, you need to be deep on the defensive side of the ball.   Seems like more injuries on D.  It takes more effort to play defense, you can get hurt by your own guys coming in on a tackle, etc.  I look at us over the years, the Lions last year, 49ers lost Bosa/Warner.  Your defensive backups better be quality, because more than a few are going to be starters at some point in the year.

This has a big effect during games, of course, but doesn't the current CBA significantly limit the number of padded,  full-contact practices a team can have during a season? The sessions during the week are way less physically demanding than they once were.

Yes, I assume you’re being sarcastic as of course there are CBA rules on padded practices and McD has been doing this for 25 years back to his Eagles stuff under the great Jimmy Johnson (the defensive genius, not the putts on Fox who used to be the Cowgirls coach)

I wasn't being sarcastic...what are you referring to?

TE, you should know the rules of the CBA as an avid NFL fan.  It’s not padded practices that is causing these soft tissue injuries.  I think the last one we had was two weeks ago.  The problem is we have been spoiled for awhile with less injuries than many teams, but we’ve had critical ones in years past at the worst times heading into the playoffs.

its a violent game so going to happen.  None of us like it.

Think you nailed it  In the 70's 80's players were like a reliable corolla Now some of these guy are like a nitrous fueled dragster.  You can only push the human body so much  I don't seem to recall a lot of non contact injuries back in the day  They seem very common now  Lot of torque changing directions when you run that fast + carry more bulk  Not football but look at explosive NBA guys like Zion  Always in the shop  Human body not designed to be 260 lbs and propel/land from 48 inches  Same with cutting , stopping on a football field

I agree our LB’s are a lot like big(ish) safeties, but we generally only play a couple of them at a time. Ed is not a big guy, but not shockingly small for a 3T. I don’t think size is Ed’s problem, he’s the opposite of those guys who just never get hurt I mentioned earlier. We do play an extra DB a lot (which is not uncommon), but other than that I think we are a mix like most teams.

I was making the point that they rarely have full-contact practices anymore during the season.

They follow the Andy Reid diet. Cheeseburgers are a great cure all!

If that were the case, they'd be on a steady diet of fresh fish.
