Since the Pope Francis thread has become overrun with false outrage, I thought that I would start this thread.

The papal conclave, to elect the successor to Pope Francis, is scheduled to begin on May 7, 2025.

The cardinals will gather in the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City to begin the process.

Start Date: May 7, 2025.

Location: Sistine Chapel in Vatican City.

Purpose: To elect a new Pope.

Timing: Conclaves must start 15 to 20 days after the pope's death, which occurred for Pope Francis on April 21, 2025

Who will be the next pope? Conclave 2025

When the world's Catholic cardinals enter the Sistine Chapel on May 7 to elect the next pontiff, eight out of ten will share one primary thing in common:

They were all elevated to their rank by Pope Francis.

As they gather for what is expected to be the largest conclave in history, the cardinals now face a stark choice: to continue along the path of reform as the trailblazing Francis — of opening the church up to the modern world and making its structures more inclusive — or to initiate a course correction.

Maybe you should read what a couple actual conclave attendees thought about his stunt. Fake outrage?

it has raised eyebrows on social media and drawn criticism, including from cardinals who are in Rome for conclave next week.

“Not funny, Sir,” the 66-year-old Filipino Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David wrote in a post on Facebook.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan, archbishop of New York, was also critical when questioned by journalists ahead of delivering a Mass in Rome on Sunday.

Asked whether he was offended by the image, Cardinal Dolan – who Trump hinted he favors for the next pope - replied, “Well, it wasn’t good.”

and Dolan is a trumper embarrassment.

Love that the Catholic Church continue to be transparent in its operations.

🙄

And since 80% of Americans aren’t Catholic, this is a big “who gives a crap” for most. All fake pomp and circumstance - reminds me of the attention the British “royal family” still gets as they walk around in 2025 playing make believe royalty.

Maybe this one will come in and actually do something about the rampant fraud and abuse of the world’s biggest tax scheme. Oh, who am I kidding? It will continue to protect its local “leaders” (priests) who commit the worst of the worst crimes. Because it’s normal to make a man vow celibacy his entire life after countless instances of pedophiles hiding behind a white collar.

Agreed. Both very good films, particularly The Two Popes.

Conclave has been said (by people who seem to know what they're talking about) to be a pretty good telling of what really goes on behind the scenes.

I was at Buckingham Palace day before King Charles 80th b-day parade last year. Stayed about a mile away from Buckingham Palace, figured it be worthwhile seeing. Couldn't get close enough next day to see it, but It was amazing the turnout and outpouring. To each his own.

Well, yes. It is obviously a very flawed institution.

Pope Francis managed to recover a moral force from the scandals of recent years. I don't always live up to his guidance - in fact, I probably honor it more in the breach - but his guidance remains a moral beacon for what I should strive to be.

Despite being a Catholic school boy, I have to admit I never figured out the whole deal with different priestly orders. But that's a big subtext (along with the liberal/conservative and Old World/New World splits). Another Jesuit? Weird that Francis was the first ever Jesuit, since they are known as unusually scholarly types and the Order has been around for four centuries.

Who knows. Right now I have more faith in the secretive process to put forth a wise man than I have in our democratic process to do so.

I've never wanted to denigrate the Catholic Church, as a beneficiary of its superior academic product throughout grammar and high school, but when I got older and looked at the theology, the Papacy, Mary, the Saints and Purgatory led me to move on to another Christian group.

Been studying the issue and active for years, and I'm pleased I decided what I did.

Hope all goes well, but I'm not invested in it.

I thought Conclave was interesting until it wasn’t.  2020s predictable 🥱, though it may well represent the process accurately.  On the other hand, I’m not aware of anyone who thinks the Eagles are doing a corporate gig at the Vatican while they’re about the work of deciding who will lead the church moving forward.

It’s the most powerful, everlasting institution in the universe. So there’s that.

Oh, I agree. The attempt to have a shocking ending was pretty ham-handed. But still: a good film offering some good insight. I didn't read the book, but friends who have liked that too.

This should be interesting.  I don't think anybody at the Conclave is in a rush to run back a lot of Pope Francis' policies and their attendant controversies,  but most of the College of Cardinals are Francis appointees.  Alongside this, the Conclave has to weigh striking where the iron's hot, like supporting the Church's rapid expansion in Africa and Asia, vs try to revive the Church where it's dying (Europe, North America), or under attack and losing ground (Latin and South America).

I honestly think the College will pivot hard to Africa and Asia. It's where the global economy will be expanding and where the most souls are now and will be in the future. That's not without risk (China's government sponsored atheism, India's government sponsored Hinduism, Islam's entrenchment in Saharan Africa, North Africa and Central Asia, etc), but you bring the gospel where the people are.

Even Trumpers are saying it was a bad look, not the Maga scum on here that Lick his balls. The denunciation of doing two dolls had been universal.

Wonder why they had his 80th birthday 4 yrs. early….

……don’t know why I thought that, guess as long as I believe it. 😏

Looked at my pics, I visited the Palace 9/8/24. Looked up the 9th, it was the 2nd Anniversary of Charles accession to the throne and the Queen’s death. Tried to add a pic, but says it’s too large.
