Gabe Davis to Jags

Recommended Posts

The initial numbers reported, as usual, are hiding the truth of the contract.

$4.7M cap hit in 2024, $6.7M in 2025.

2026 is where it gets interesting. He is supposed to carry a $17.2M cap hit that year or they can cut him for $14.6M in dead cap, then a huge void year cap hit of $10.4M in 2027, and smaller void year cap hits in 2028 and 2029.

No way he will see that $17.2M cap hit. If he underperforms they will likely offer him a pay cut in 2026. If he performs as well or better than hoped they would likely extend him to massage out that cap hit further into the future.

Most three year deals have an out on the last  year right ?

The percentage of guaranteed  money seems a little higher than usual IMO … not that I’m going to lose any sleep over it…

Gabe is certainly one of the most enigmatic draft picks of the Beane era.  Had games in which he dominated, and long stretches in which you wondered if he was on the field.  A lot of nagging lower body injuries that probably affected him more than we know.  Never turned into that reliable 2nd guy who could make a contested catch for a 1st down when you needed it.

By all accounts a great guy loved by his teammates and coaches.  A willing and able blocker.  We’ll never forget the KC performance in the playoffs and the Pittsburgh game — but that is also the problem.  There aren’t enough of those types of memories.

I really do wish him best of luck.  I’m sure we’ll have the “Gabe update” threads around here by both those who loved and hated him.

that’s a lot of dead money after year 2 if only 11m is accounted for in the cap at that point.
