AN IMPORTANT REMINDER:

‘Public schools don’t belong to the teachers.’

If you’re hired to teach in a public school, you’re supposed to teach your subject and be neutral about your politics, writes Robert Pondiscio. Maybe your ed school professors told you teachers are “change agents,” “child advocates,” or “architects of democracy,” and urged you to challenge “systems of oppression” and teach for “justice.” But that’s not your job.

Public education is “an essential government service,” not a personal platform, Pondiscio writes. “It exists not to change society but to sustain it — to transmit the shared knowledge, language, habits, and civic norms upon which self-government depends.”

For a long time now, “teacher preparation programs have evaluated candidates not only on their knowledge and skills but on their dispositions,” such as “commitment to diversity,” “cultural competence,” and a “social justice orientation,” he writes. Teachers are encouraged “to treat the classroom as a platform for identity and belief rather than as a civic institution that molds citizens.”

That’s eroded public trust, he argues. Neutrality and humility are “required to sustain or restore faith in public education.”

We have any number of institutions that seemed happy to sacrifice public trust on the altar of leftism.

I do not know the teacher but know several at the school. This is a red pill for some people to see the absurdity when we can have Malcolm X posters

I was at the school mentioned in this article today and they had a quote on the wall of the library from Ta-Nehisi Coates, who is controversial by any standard and half of his quotes are anti school.

For me education boils down to a focus on teaching students what to think vs. teaching students how to think.

Rather than memorize lots of facts and figures and face indoctrination in some ideology its more important in life to understand how to diagnose and solve a problem or issue via logic and critical thinking skills.

But like George Carlin said the last thing any government wants is to be confronted by a population of citizens capable of critical thinking.

My only surprise is near the end with the idea of "our" only concern is with the Imam and not the students. The students all just did as the Imam said, that is concerning, not as bad as the Imam but bad.

I looked this school up and its performance is low. 15% math and 30% reading but they have time for this stupidity? I get annoyed when we have pep rallies twice a year and my freshman most likely outperform their seniors.

Presumably the students were off to assist the Imam with the cutting off of the fingers, all hands on deck sorta thing.   Pretty bad all things considered.

My wife and I homeschooled our children until it became increasingly clear we needed two incomes to keep up with bills.

If you take part in the raising of your children and teach them values at home, school doesn't have to be an issue.   The problem starts with parents who have kids and then expect someone else to raise and educate them.

Education in this country would be far less of a problem if parents stopped "trying to find themseleves" in their 30s and 40s and grew up.    The issue starts with the collapse of the American family.  If you want to have free time and hobbies dont have kids.

this really doesn't have to be hard.  at all.

I agree, so why did it become hard? Why did the focus shift away from helping each student be there best?

i'm not willing to say it's not that way in the vast majority.  one student crashing out at the southern school of energy and sustainability, (i'm guessing this is a non-traditional school) doesn't represent the public school system in general.  there will always be incidences like this, but again, i'm not someone who thinks schools are a camp for indoctrination.

I think teachers mostly all suck these days

its kinda our own fault by paying them poverty wages. So, anyone who is competent in life wants to make money, go figure.

we end up with those that are incompetent and wanting more to be called “Mr/Ms… so&so” instead of Frank and Karen and get their summers off lol.

It truly depends on the school you go to, while all schools have poor teachers, I would state 90% of the teachers at my school are good at their jobs but the other 10% are atrocious, and my daughter unfortunately got one this year for English. There are schools in my district where the teachers are 50/50, but we do have school choice and vouchers here, so it is up to the parents to help there kids.

i don't think that the teachers suck so much as the game has changed when it comes to education.  if they can't get the backing of parents or certain admin, what's the point.  my wife is a school psych, and a lot of her coworkers are great teacher, who legit care about the kids.  Whether or not they can teach they way they want is the question for me.

even years ago we'd see teachers hang on because of the ease of the job and money.  my wife has an aunt that i think taught kindergarten or first grade, and was making around 100k a year.  She just lingered around because why not?  now we see nys teachers bailing the moment they hit their 30 years.  not just retiring, but running in the other direction, with no desire to even sub.  add in the lowered retirement tier system in ny, and it will make young kids think about going into teaching.
