Student in yearbook identified only as 'Black Girl

Recommended Posts

It seems fairly obvious to me that races are divided by locations that is called segregation.

I guess that means my house is segregated because only white people live there. I'm trying like hell to diverify, though. My dogs are all black. 0:)

It's a PUBLIC education.  All kids, no matter the economic status of their parents should have access to it.  Just because you choose to pay more in taxes doesn't give you the right to build a wall around the school and keep others out.

If you want to deny access to "inner city kids" (whatever that implies), pay the extra dough to go to a private school that will keep the "inner city kids" out.

It is an education paid for BY the people of the district FOR the people of that district. If you want the benefits of living in that district, LIVE IN THAT DISTRICT. Seems pretty simple to me. No need for a wall. Live in the district and you get the benefits of the district. If you don't live in the district and want the benefits of my district, move into my district.

So put up some real money and dump your kids in private school, where they can learn racism the old fashioned way.

Claiming that equality in education is equivalent to being in the USSR is downright moronic.

You must not own a home.

Well then why was your first recommendation to raise taxes for student B.

I am not raising their taxes. They choose to live where they want to live. Nothing is being forced on them.

Almost as moronic as making a comment like "so put up some real money and dump your kids in private school, where they can learn racism the old fashioned way"

I live in Pittsford and my daughter goes to a private school that, while it is certainly predominantly white, is a good deal more diverse than the elementary schools in the Pittsford school district.

I grew up in Penfield and when I went to college (at an Ivy), there were a hell of a lot more minorities there than there ever were in my high school.

KD, I agree -- that comment IS moronic.

Anyone who find racial division in this society troubling should find this troubling.

I only got as far as this post in the thread so forgive me if it has been already mentioned, but honestly FFS, I couldn't disagree more.

I'm 6'2" and if I'm in the company of a group of people that are no taller than say, 5'5", I would expect to be called the "tall man." If I'm the only person of European descent in a Mexican or Chinese restaurant, I wouldn't care if the hostess told the waiter that "a new customer; the Anglo" was just seated in his section.

The term "black girl" was probably used because "black-haired girl" would have applied to too many others to make it a definitive description. IMO, anyone being upset about this (not racism but identifying this incident as racism) really needs to find a bigger issue to champion, and in this day and age, there's no shortage of those...

Racism has become more subtle, but it is there, all over.

The other day, we were late for a dinner. We had stopped at a grocery store in a city neighborhood (a national chain). I was bitching about the lady in line in front of me who could not figure out how to use her food stamp ATM card, and had three screaming brats with no father in sight. Add to this the dumbest cashier minimum wage can buy and it took FOREVER to get through the checkout line.

The manager had to come over, straighten things out, and apologized for the convenience.

After I told the story to my friends one of them said that this was why they did not shop in the city - frickin dumb blacks! Several people immediately agreed. I then explained that the cashier and welfare mom were white and the manager who set things right was black. Things got quiet and some faces were red.

Don't let my avatar fool you. I am white bread. 0:) I fight this kind of personal prejudice that was bred into me too. This has little to do with the original topic, but thought it applied to where it has wandered....

dib, it's not just "lazy a**" blacks who still remember what atrocities blacks were forced to endure.  There are plenty of educated and employed blacks who deal w/ racism on a daily basis.  Now, do they use it as an excuse?  No.  To ASSume that the blacks who still are bitter due to many years of racism are all unemployed and lazy is quite incorrect.  I consider myself educated and I've been employed for the better part of the past 18 years and there are still times when I feel the effects of racism.  It happens, and will probably happen from time to time for the rest of my life.  I can accept that, even if I don't agree w/ it.

And in this case changes his position in 5 minutes depending on the audience.

If that's the case, he has the whole politician-thingy figured out! 0:)

If everyone took my position of hating all humanity with equal vigor, the world would be a better place.

How did I change my position? You tried to portray me as something I am not, and I called you on it. 0:)
