Movies omitting subtitles

It's fine with me as long as context and body language make it clear what the director is trying to get across. I think it's relatively easy to do that for a director like Spielberg. I'm not going to question his decisions in that regard.

But I find it sort of funny, from that article, that the Spanish community and deaf community are going back and forth about how great or terrible it is respectfully.

Spanish people want to use it to take a dig at "white" people and are meanwhile potentially insulting deaf people.... 🙄

The problem with subtitles is that they distract you from what is going on on the screen. I still remember from my college days in Germany, watching Tarkovsky's "Solaris" in Russian, with English subtitles. I was so busy reading the subtitles, that I missed much of the action on the screen. In addition, as I was sitting in the third row of the cinema, my neck hurt the next day.

Don't they have some high-tech device earpods or something you can wear that will translate?  Like the UN. 😏

They got practically everything else.

I guess the deaf peeps will always be "othered" but at least it won't be by the mean old white man...

Um...you may want to patent this idea before some techy makes a couple million off of it. Like I told my nephews when they asked me for a million dollar idea, you don't need that, what you need is a one dollar idea that a million people want.

And you don't need to be particularly smart.  You DO need to be particularly risky and willing to do crazy things most people would not feel comfortable with.  And you need to be willing to work like a dog.  Like, willing to make your entire life about work.

That's my observation after 20+ years working as an attorney with and for extremely wealthy individuals.

Unless it's changed in the last 30 years, those headphones you see them wearing at the UN, there's a live person on the other end translating.  Not very high tech, but it works.
