2021 Salary Cap

At least we got to delay the offseason discussion by a month+. But on to next year we go...

Many expect to see a lot of changes on the roster - very likely or maybe not. The salary cap is still a big question mark. The current number being floated is the Bills only have $2.5M in space. Important note - that is based on a big drop from ~$200M to $175M which is the floor. I just dont see the NFL landing there. So the Bills could easily pick up $20M+ just from that moving closer to $200M and flat with this year. Then you add the below potential cuts which the Bills are surely to at least make a few. So for these conversations I dont think we should use the $2.5M cap number. It is likely to be closer to a $40M available number.

Potential Savings

Morse - $5M

Addison - $6M

Brown - $8M

Hughes - $7.3M

Jefferson - $6.5M

Butler - $6.8M

Add in some of these cuts or restructures and you could add another $40M. So we could easily enter free agency with $60M in space to sign some of our own and add some talent.

add Lee Smith 2.2M to the list...Star L returns next season, I would expect the Bills to take a long look at him in camp and see if their is chemistry between him clogging a gap and Oliver being able to be freed up to penetrate more and make plays.

Stats show Bills pass rush bring the pressure but the older gents seem to a step slow getting to the qb so the hits, hurries and sacks arent really there

I'd save a lot on the DL by letting most of them go.  Use savings to sign Tomlinson from the Giants to play 1T and/or an Edge rusher, and draft those positions also.

Agree,  DL is the highest paid position group collectively on this team, but IMO, they are the weakest part of the team.  Need to revamp this position in the offseason for sure.

I've never understood the Morse hate / "cut him" takes. I think Morse has been great this year and in his career.

As much as I hate to say it, I think Smoke is gone. Addison, Butler, and Jefferson should be upgraded as well.

Morse isn't playing like 2nd highest Center in league. That said I keep him with no viable replacement on this team. If we can add Stills for half the money I agree send Smoke on his way, Butler and Jefferson should go. Addison had his moments. I'd keep him unless sign a Bud Dupree or Matt Judon as UFA.

Doubt you want to cut 4 D Lineman of the team.  I'd cut Butler and if you can sign a higher level proven edge rusher would also add in Addision.  Going further than that you're going to start to weaken the team too far and/or will need to sign a bunch of replacments.   Could see a restructure/extension for Hughes maybe add one more year to deal, think I'd like to keep Jefferson as he's more versatile, can play inside or outside.

On the O-Line I'd cut Morse if means can resign Mongo and Williams.  If only signing one, then would keep Morse.

Brown is gone unless takes a huge like 50% pay cut.

You also need to keep around $5 mil for draft picks, plus teams like to keep between $3 to $5 mil for in season injury replacements.

So your plan is to create 4 new openings on DLine (plus Murphy as a UFA), a spot at center, and number 2 WR to create ~40 million in space, but 6 new positions at minimum that need to be filled.

How much are you spending on the new guys?  @ngbills

Unless you are going bare bones minimum salary on DLine (which would be worse players than you are cutting) - you are just spinning your tires at that position. Why cut unless you have a better alternative in place.

Let’s look at with Morse - save 5 million, but lose your starting Center - what are you replacing him with.  Feliciano? FA? Draft Pick?  Are you getting better or did you create a hole without being able to fill it?  Chances are very good that you either are spending more than you saved or you are replacing him with a back-up level Center hurting the line.

Brown - save 8 million - what is your replacement @ngbills?  We saw speed kills are you going to try and replace Brown with Davis (a decrease in speed)?  Are you signing some FA and at what cost?  Most number 2 WRs with speed are going to cost you 8+ a season or are you willing to risk a step back On offense.

While I agree the salary cap is going to be tough this off season - I just do not see the Bills cutting a bunch of players that will need to be replaced with similar priced players as it does nothing to help the team.

I think they will work to re-sign their own players and will see what is available to bring in, but I imagine the majority of the 2021 Bills will be off the 2020 season.  I do not see them cutting a majority of players and actually expect they will try to rework a few of those contracts.

Why do you think Stills would sign for half the money?  He was paid very similar to Brown for last year by Houston.  I would assume he is looking for 7+ million as a FA with speed on the outside.

He could end up a replacement, but I don’t think you end up saving much between him and Brown and I think he is a lesser player than Brown overall.

Because his numbers took a dive last year, he was cut mid season and signed weeks later to just a practice squad. It's a what have you done lately league. I can't see him getting $8 million a season anywhere.

I dont see them doing all of those moves. Those are just the most likely players that will get a hard look.

I think on DL - they keep 2 and cut 2 out of Addison, Jefferson, Butler, Hughes. That is $13M that can be used on 1 player. So you have Star, Phillips, Oliver, Zimmer, Epenesa, and Johnson. Maybe you bring back Hughes and Addison and let Butler and Jefferson walk. Now you have $13M for a guy.

Morse I would hope they can restructure. He is not a $10M center at this point in his career. Restructure him and draft a C. Other options for a 1 year deal - Mack or Pouncey. Worse case you go with Feliciano and find a G.

Brown is similar to Morse. Maybe you restructure him. But if stretched for cap and have Diggs, Beasley, Davis, Hodgins and options like McK, Stills, Kumerow and free agents that could fit his role like a John Ross.
