Republican officials throughout the country are reacting with growing alarm to President Donald Trump's attacks on mail-in ballots, saying his unsubstantiated claims of mass voting fraud are already corroding the views of GOP voters, who may ultimately choose not to vote at all if they can't make it to the polls come November.

 

Behind the scenes, top Republicans are urging senior Trump campaign officials to press the President to change his messaging and embrace mail-in voting, warning that the party could lose the battle for control of Congress and the White House if he doesn't change his tune, according to multiple GOP sources.

 

The impact could be detrimental to the GOP up and down the ticket, according to a bevy of Republican election officials, field operatives, pollsters and lawmakers who are watching the matter closely. Every vote will count in critical battleground states, they argue, fearful that deterring GOP voters from choosing a convenient option to cast their ballots could ultimately sway the outcome of races that are decided by a couple of percentage points.

 

And with the coronavirus pandemic potentially bound to get worse in the fall, voting by mail is becoming an increasingly popular option since many voters may prefer not to wait in long lines at polling stations. That will leave Democrats with a major advantage if their voters send their ballots by mail while Republican voters forgo that option simply because they are listening to the concerns of the President.

They're right. Forcing the post office to actually put postmarks on mail is terrible! How can they magically "find" the ballots they need to swing elections, if they're forced to actually mail them in?!?

The Republican National Committee (RNC), the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), and the Florida GOP won a federal court victory upholding Florida’s ban on ballot harvesting. Priorities USA, a progressive advocacy group, and other Democrat plaintiffs dismissed their claims in Nielsen v. DeSantis, a lawsuit challenging Florida’s ban on ballot harvesting which also aimed to force the state to count ballots that arrived after Election Day.

The plaintiffs also dropped their claim that Florida needed to provide pre-paid postage on vote-by-mail ballots. RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said in a statement on Sunday: Today’s victory is a win for Florida voters and a win for election integrity.

SO I VOTED YESTERDAY.

 

It was early voting for some local elections and state primaries. There was a moderate crowd, with me having to wait about 5 minutes to get in.

 

Everyone was masked and spaced. We had the new optically-scanned paper ballot system, where you mark a ballot, it’s scanned by a machine, and they keep the paper copy for recounts.

 

The poll workers did a good job keeping everything moving and nobody seemed to have any problems.

 

So much for the notion that a pandemic interferes with in-person voting.

CBS News decided to test the system upon which the government will entrust the sanctity of the ballot this November. And the U.S. Postal Service flubbed it.

 

This is not about gaming the system, or voter fraud, or stuffing the mail with fake ballots from illegal aliens. This is about the competency of the USPS to deliver official ballots sent through the mail on time, and to the right people. They proved that the 100 million or more Americans who plan to mail in their ballots should not expect their vote to be counted unless they mail it weeks prior to the election deadlines in each state.

 

And even then there’s no guarantee it will be processed and counted.

 

The parameters of the test were simple and straightforward. CBS mailed 100 ballots to locations across Philadelphia in an experiment to see how long it took the ballots to arrive. A post office box was set up to receive the returned ballots.

 

A few days later, another 100 ballots were mailed to another 100 locations in the city. The results should frighten Democrats who claim they are all about “every vote being counted.”

A week after initial ballots were sent, most ballots appeared to be missing from the P.O. box.

 

“I don’t see anything back there for you,” a postal worker told Dokoupil when he received the mail. “That’s all I have back there right now.”

 

After asking for a manager and explaining the situation to them, the votes were found.

 

“They had them somewhere else,” the postal worker said.

Ho-hum, well, no one is perfect. That’s the point, isn’t it?

 

The mysterious problems at the local post office also included missorted mail.

And in 2012, The New York Times—yes, The New York Times!—actually published an informative article about the problems with absentee ballots, pointing out that “votes cast by mail are less likely to be counted, more likely to be compromised, and more likely to be contested than those cast in a voting booth, statistics show.”
