What Would Bernie Sander's Foreign Policy Be Like?

He has just given a great big middle finger to AIPAC and said it's accepting of bigots.

But really, that's not so different than Obama's stance to Israel.

I looked up his policy page and just am sharing it for thoughts and comment.

https://berniesanders.com/issues/responsible-foreign-policy/

Key Points

  • Implement a foreign policy which focuses on democracy, human rights, diplomacy and peace, and economic fairness.
  • Allow Congress to reassert its Constitutional role in warmaking, so that no president can wage unauthorized and unconstitutional interventions overseas.
  • Follow the American people, who do not want endless war.
  • End U.S. support for the Saudi-led intervention in Yemen, which has created the world’s worst humanitarian catastrophe.

Details

The U.S. must lead the world in improving international cooperation in the fight against climate change, militarism, authoritarianism, and global inequality. When we are in the White House, we will:

  • Implement a foreign policy which focuses on democracy, human rights, diplomacy and peace, and economic fairness.
  • Allow Congress to reassert its Constitutional role in warmaking, so that no president can wage unauthorized and unconstitutional interventions overseas.
  • Follow the American people, who do not want endless war. American troops have been in Afghanistan for nearly 18 years, the longest war in American history. Our troops have been in Iraq since 2003, and in Syria since 2015, and many other places. It is long past time for Congress to reassert its Constitutional authority over the use of force to responsibly end these interventions and bring our troops home.
  • End U.S. support for the Saudi-led intervention in Yemen, which has created the world’s worst humanitarian catastrophe.
  • Rejoin the Iran nuclear agreement and talk to Iran on a range of other issues.
  • Work with pro-democracy forces around the world to build societies that work for and protect all people. In the United States, Europe, and elsewhere, democracy is under threat by forces of intolerance, corruption, and authoritarianism.

I'm sure that Bernie will use the Bully Pulpit to yell at all of the world's leaders until world peace breaks out, unicorns flood the skies with pollution-cleansing rainbow farts, and all regional/territorial disputes are permanently solved to everyone's satisfaction.

He will bring utopia to the planet, all while making the top 1% use 8,000% of their total combined wealth to pay for it.

a. Democracy, peace, human rights

b. Socialism

Pick one.

Who cares about irrelevant crap like democracy, peace, food, and human rights when there's free stuff to be had under a socialist regime!?!

Just imagine what you can do when your student loans are discharged, your health insurance is taken away so that you can pay even more for medicare supplements, you're paid to not work, you don't have to worry about spending money on food, and re-educational gulags!

These idiots that think their student loans will be forgiven are forgetting a simple fact. If they pay it off, it's done, gone forever. If the government pays it off, THEY then get to pay for student debt the rest of their lives.

Who breeds people this stupid?

The same as all socialists.

Close the borders

Shut down access to news from the outside

Manipulate the currency

Disarm the people

Turn the army on the people

He can't even defend the stage at his own rally from a 120 lb female dairy activist.

That was pathetic.

I don't know how he continued to hold on to any kind of support after the BLM people stole his mic last time around. He was (is) completely ineffectual.

Bernie’s foreign policy consists of 2 basic steps:

1. Ask the CIA what we should do.

2. Do the opposite.

His message of strict non-interventionism has been remarkably consistent for his entire life, from his days as a teenager all the way through his three decades in Congress. He’s also our best and possibly last chance of ever reversing the post-WW2 growth of the military-industrial complex.

This is demonstrably false. If it were true, Bernie wouldn’t have pushed the Trump/Russia (a CIA concoction) for as long as he did.

Bernie has no prayer of reigning in the IC. He’d be run over by them, as he’s been his entire congressional career.

Consistency is not always a good thing. After all, Joe Biden has been consistently wrong his whole life.

When I say “foreign policy,” I’m referring to US interactions directed onto other countries: international diplomacy, economic sanctions, organized coups, boots on the ground, and the like.

You and I are probably much closer to agreeing than you may think about the ultimate goal we both want with regards to Langley dictating foreign policy from the shadows. It’s been something I’ve objected to well before Trump.

But if you look honestly at what Trump’s administration has done on this subject, he’s delivered and then some. He’s waged war against the CIA (and the IC as a whole) since literally his first full day in office when he went to Langley with Flynn by his side (DIA) and delivered a speech promising to destroy the CIA’s fifth column in front of their wall of honor. He’s resisted three different attempts to deepens conflicts in Syria and Iran. All the while, his administration has gutted illegal finance networks/slush funds (some tied to Langley for that exact kind of black bag work) and decimated both ISIS and Hamas without sending battalions across borders. And all without hardly any media coverage or acknowledgement.

The foreign policy you’re ascribing to Sanders is being done by Trump right now. Better than Sanders could ever dream.

I’m not touching the Russiagate conspiracy, partly because it was a farce and an obvious hoax that I was against from the beginning. But relitigating it also derails what is potentially an interesting thread that Tiberius started. We all know, by the way, that the Republicans are ready to accuse Bernie of being a treasonous communist working secretly with Russia or China or Cuba or Venezuela if he becomes president, so let’s not hypocritically pretend like ridiculous political theater is a one-way street.

Here you’re missing the forest through the trees. You use the word “Republicans” when you really mean the IC and unelected CIA suits trying to dictate policy behind the scenes.

Russiagate wasn’t concocted by Democrats. It was run by unelected people within, and at the head of, the CIA, FBI and DOJ. You say you want a candidate who’s going to stop the CIA’s tradition of running coups in foreign country’s for malicious purposes — and I agree. But they did that here, just in this past election.

And Bernie helped.

Because he’s not an outsider bucking the system. He IS the system. He’s part of the machine.

By the way, Trump ran as the non-interventionist candidate in 2016, but his actions in Yemen and Venezuela belie that claim. Foreign policy is one of the wedge issues that the Bernie campaign intends to use against Trump in order to win back the Midwest white working class. It’s part of the larger theme of faux populism versus populism. Stay tuned!

Bernie can’t touch Trump on foreign policy — if he tries he’ll lose by an even larger margin.

Pinning Yemen on Trump belies your own misunderstanding of what is happening in that conflict. Ditto with Venezuela.
