As far as his intentions, I'm sure there was a financial aspect. But also there's the aspect of any musician or performer that just love to perform. I'm sure there's also a motivational aspect to prove to himself and others that he can still do it. Either way, props to him. The Real Buffalo Joe Posted October 2, 2019 Share Posted October 2, 2019 My wife and her father are going up to Oklahoma to see ZZ Top with her brother, and spend time with him and his family for a week. I was a bit bummed that I couldn't make it because I love ZZ Top. Then they announced a veteran's benefit concert that Joe Walsh hosts in a different city every year. Lineup is: Joe Walsh ZZ Top Brad Paisley Sheryl Crow Jason Isbell "And More." Which usually means some gigantic surprise guest, or a local opening band or two. $45 for the ticket including fees and whatnot. Jason Isbell I'm not very familiar with, but the few songs I know are good. Paisley and Crow are neither my cup of tea, but I'll watch/listen because I paid. But Joe Walsh and ZZ Top I'm excited for. It's the night before Veterans Day so I don't have to be home early. And it's somewhat close to where I watch the Bills games, so I'll probably just park in one spot for the day and walk. So this website I signed up for once called Goldstar gives them away and just charges the BS convenience fees. I’m sitting row R of the front section for $13.50. I know @Gugny saw it last year. Different lineup, but super excited, especially for the price and in a small theater. It's like no concert I've ever seen before. I didn't realize that Chris Layton from Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble was going to be the main drummer for most of the show. Eric Johnson was great. Dweezil Zappa started the show. Johnny Lang started his set playing "All Along the Watchtower" acoustically like Dylan, and slowly worked his way up to playing it like Hendrix. Then he shred it on "Fire." Second half after intermission was even better. Started out with the great Buddy Guy. This was personally my favorite part, as I'm a huge blues guy. This was my fourth time seeming Buddy Guy (I named my dog after him). It was interesting because he's usually quite a showman, but actually played a much more reserved role. Billy Cox from Band of Gypsies played bass during this set, and the played Hey Joe and Red House with the Slide Brothers, who I'd never heard of before but want to look them up. They're two guys that play pedal steal guitars. Buddy and each of the two Slide Brothers took a solo on Red House. Show ended with Joe Satriani playing the heavier stuff (Voodoo Chile, etc.) along with dUg Pinnick from King's X on bass, and Kenny Aronoff on drums. Satriani is just a virtuoso on guitar and put on a clinic. If I didn't witness it first hand, I truly would have thought it was some sort of synthesizer or someone singing because I've never heard a guitar make those noises before. It's one that Joe Walsh puts on in a different city every year on the Sunday before Veteran's Day. Last night was at the Toyota Center (Houston Rockets home arena) Huge lineup. Brad Paisley- Never been a fan, so I didn't recognize any songs except when he did an Alabama medley. Dude could surprisingly wail on the guitar though. Sheryl Crow- Recognized more songs than I thought. Pretty good. Jason Isbell- A new artist playing more traditional country. ZZ Top- The reason I went. Love them, but a little disappointed but not surprised in their setlist. Played more Eliminator than anything, and I'm a bigger fan of their earlier stuff. But they only had about 50 minutes to play, and those songs are their money makers. But when they play live, even most of their pop like stuff is great because it's stripped down for the 3 piece band. Doobie Brothers- Not sure why these guys aren't in the Hall of Fame. Great set of nothing but hits. Joe Walsh- Incredible. Weird af dude though, but you can tell he has fun, which is rare for a lot of the older acts. Drew Carey was the surprise MC. Bit of salt in the wound considering I'd just gotten there from watching the Bills lose to his Browns. Overall it was a great show for a good cause. Promoted a lot of different veteran non profits. Also, I bought the cheapest seats in the house. I knew for a fact I was back row in the upper deck. When they scanned my phone, and printed my ticket, it said section 108. I don't know if it was a clerical error or they didn't sell enough tickets, or what. But that was about what center ice would be for hockey, 20 rows up club level. Jason Isbell is one of my favorites, and although he's newer than everyone on that bill he's been a solo artist for about 10 years and with the Drive By Truckers before that. Seats in the section I usually try to get for other Saratoga concerts (which usually cost 100-120/each, tops) are over 400 bucks/each. That's a big ol' FU to their fans. Oh, well.
