Happy Birthday to Bills' Hall of Famer Billy Shaw - Retire Number 66!

Happy Birthday!

As far as retiring his number: he would probably be the next player whose number I would want the Bills to retire.  But that would probably be the last one, for now.  Number retirement should be few and far between, and only for the very best.  Billy probably makes that cut.  While the team has, in my opinion, lowered the bar for Wall of Fame enshrinement, jersey retirement has remained very privileged.  I hope it remains that way.

Thanks for the old guard bills players who are forgotten on this message board. We need a veteran message board discussing the bills before Kelly.

There are still plenty of us here, reigning in the pups.

Shaw's number deserves to be retired.  He was a critical player on the early teams and a major fan favorite.  We could use a few of him now on the OL: tough, consistent, reliable.

He played in our very 1st game in ‘60 and throughout our AFL days. But Sestak was the better player of those teams.

Butch Byrd STILL holds the record for most interceptions. I’ve never seen another Conerback remotely look like him.

I’ve been saying to everybody about butch. He should be on the damn wall out there. My gosh look at his stats. I come to bat for him on this message board all the time. Bills have forgotten about him. Sad.

Chandler 81, nobody here talks hardly about the pre Kelly days. I used to go to the rockpile and was on the sidelines for the very last game versus the lions. Robert L. smith was my neighbor who was on the sidelines all the time was the bills chief photographer who got me on the field.

That's because nobody ever threw to the receiver Robert James was covering.

Ever.

Billy Shaw reportedly lost over an inch in height based on blocking.

The only guy that owned Ernie Ladd.

The injury that ended his career was rather unfortunate.  He was so good!

I've been following them since '63, my first game, and that includes being a ball boy for two short weeks, and being a friend of an usher during the War Memorial Stadium times and watching them practice.

If someone asked me to name the most dominant three since; players who were so much better that they demanded staying away from, or dealing with......

OJ.....He was on a different planet.

Robert James.....Simply idiotic to ever throw at his coverage, and nobody did.

Bruce Smith....Never has one man been blocked by so many for so long. Impossible to handle one on one, when he was interested.

I think they played one season together.

Yep. Butch’s counterpart was Booker Edgerson for most of his career.

Many of us mention the original era. I guess you have to read more threads..

Not only a HOF guard but a great team mate and member of the community; he played in an era when players lived in our neighborhoods and shopped at the same grocery stores; Marty Schottenheimer played cards at the same tavern as my father. More importantly, Billy Shaw was an AFL loyalist; as Angie's bumper sticker states "NEVER FOR THE AFL." Great post and thanks!

I always liked Sestak, but was told one day that the reason he starred was because Jim Dunaway was double-teamed on more or less every play.

Those were some good football players, and Shaw too. I'm proud to keep his name on display.
