Barnwell's NFL quarter-season awards: Picks for MVP, best rookies

Bill Barnwell ESPN Staff Writer

Coach of the Year

First: Mike Vrabel, Tennessee Titans

The Titans have every excuse to be 0-4. Their Week 1 game against the Dolphins was interrupted twice by lightning storms. They lost Marcus Mariota and both of their starting tackles for Week 2 and then had to bring Mariota back even though he couldn't grip the ball effectively after Blaine Gabbert was concussed in Week 3. This week, they hosted the Super Bowl champion Eagles and let a possible game-winning touchdown slip through their hands in overtime when Darius Jennings dropped a perfectly thrown Mariota bomb.

Instead, the Titans keep answering the bell and manufacturing ways to win. After losing the opener, they parlayed a fake punt touchdown, a Wildcat drive with Derrick Henry at quarterback, and a tough defensive stop into a win over the Texans. They shut down Blake Bortles after a career day against the Patriots in Week 3 to win with a limited Mariota. On Sunday, they converted a fourth-and-15 and a fourth-and-2 in overtime, with Vrabel correctly passing up a 50-yard field goal to push for a victory. It might be tough to keep pulling out games this way, but Vrabel has his team fighting adversity and beating some tough football teams right now. The rookie coach deserves a ton of credit.

Well, all we know is that it will be a blowout. Not sure which team will get steam rolled (odds are it's Buffalo), but it will be bad.

Oh, and the first half will house all the points. The second half will not be worth watching.

We at https://gotitans.com/ like to visit the forums of teams we play each week.

Here is how our season has gone this year:

  • We lost the game we were supposed to win then won the games we were supposed to lose
  • Major injury issues early in the year. Our top 4 offensive players (in order -- Delainie Walker, Taylor Lewan, Jack Conklin and Marcus Mariota) missed significant time. All but Walker are back and healthy now though
  • Run game has been trash
  • WRs pretty good though there have been some bad drops and the number 1 WR the previous 2 years up and quit on the team
  • Pass rush is strong, we were able to put a lot of pressure on Carson Wentz, even with their good OL.  Rookie Harold Landry is doing well rushing the passer
  • Secondary is hit and miss. We had another injury at SS. High priced FA Malcolm Butler has a habit of following up a big a big play by giving up a big play
  • Run defense could be better. First round rookie Rashaan Evans has barely played and missed all of TC
  • New coaching staff appears to be light years ahead of the old Mike Mularkey staff

My prediction is a defensive battle between the Bills and Titans. Which is how all our games have gone this year.

Blitz Allen early and Often. He is having trouble reading it. Play Man against our WRs.

Depends what defense you are going to see. I expect the good defense being home but I expect Mariota to gash them with his legs.

I think the non-competitive trend ends this week in a closely contested game that comes down to the end.

I think Bar Bill may have something to say about that wing comment of yours....

And 911 tavern and Doc Sullivans

I don’t think the Titans are very good but we’re awful.  I think it will be a tight game though but you should worry if you don’t beat us.

also, I love Nashville.  So many women! ?

I just want to score points this game is that too much to ask. We really played pretty good defense against the Packers and if we could muster some sort of Offense we could stay competitive.

This must be the plan in Buffalo, set the bar so low, that scoring any points at all = winning.

Defensive Line All-Stars: A look back at Week 4's standout players

Run Defender of the Week: Jurrell Casey, Titans

No one expected the Tennessee Titans to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Philadelphia Eagles in back-to-back weeks, particularly while Marcus Mariota is less than 100 percent. But that’s exactly what they did on the back of some excellent play from the defense.

Against the Eagles, defensive lineman Jurrell Casey was at the top of his game, finishing with five stops, three hurries, and a quarterback hit. Yet, while he made his presence felt as a pass-rusher, Casey made his biggest impact against the run:

Here, Casey is aligned with an outside shade over All-Pro center Jason Kelce to the near side of the field. Casey times the snap well so he can initiate contact with Kelce, and his power knocks the center back, giving Casey the necessary space to peek inside. From there, he shows good eye discipline to identify the running back's path and makes a clean tackle behind the line of scrimmage.

It’s not flashy, but Casey's a talented player who does his job and plays a valuable role on the Titans' defense.
