If you actually watched his games I'm not sure how you could come to that conclusion.

Lots of pro scouts care to the same conclusion.  Don’t act like it’s obvious to every professional scout that he sucks.  That isn’t the case.  That’s your case.  Have fun watching him weekly

I'd click both options if possible.

No, I didn't want him, and I wasn't a fan. He's shown nothing in college that leads me to believe he'll be a good NFL QB.

On the other hand, he's a player on the Buffalo Bills now, and therefore, he's my guy.

I want nothing but the best for him, and I hope he does what no other college QB with stats like his has done and breaks out in the NFL.

How about Russel Wilson's stats at North Carolina State?

Made a big jump in his last year. Looks like the light went on. Still went in the third round. He wasn't the seventh overall. And at least he showed that he could do it. Allen has not, as of yet.

What do you think contributed most to him making that incredible jump of 15% in his completion percentage in contrast to his first 3 years?

Better team, scheme and as I said, a light came on. But at least he proved he could do it, we haven't seen that from Allen yet. So we're betting on that, tall order for the seventh pick in the draft. No matter how you think about it it's a crap shoot. Picking that high I'd rather have a guy who showed he could do it in the past. To me past performance is the best indicator of future performance. You may disagree, but hey that's fine.

Proved he could do what? Perform better in an easier situation? Isn't that just common sense?

Wilson was the same quarterback with the same skillset at NC State that he was at Wisconsin. The difference wasn't him, it was his environment.

If Allen transferred to, say, Oklahoma this summer instead of entering the draft, of course his 2018 stats would reflect Baker Mayfield's 2017 stats.

Woulda Coulda Shoulda. If we drafted Wilson seventh overall I'd have the same doubts so I'm having right now about Allen. Third-round he's a steal, 7th overall at that time don't know. I'm saying we picked a kid, 7th overall, who hasn't shown me anything in college. So I go by what I see,  you go by what it could be. I hope you're right. The one thing I won't do, like everybody else on the board seems to do, is recreate the past and make excuses for it. The kids got a lot of proving to do.

No idea what the future holds but it's easy to see the awful situation Allen was put in at Wyoming, especially last season. Maybe some just can't because they're not sure what they're watching.

Yeah I'mnot trying to be Debbie Downer here. It's just that he was my least favorite going in because I saw a lot of hesitation after his first read was covered. I saw a lot of bolting out of the pocket that was otherwise clean.  I don't know it's just a lot going on that I didn't like. But I hope, beyond all hope, he's the exception that blossoms at this level. I want a legit franchise QB more than you can imagine. I'm 55 years into following and loving this team.

What were you watching? Highlights, game film? Interviews?

What games I could find on YouTube. I’d love all-22 but I don’t have access to any.

....because he’s better than I thought.

Because I see him making reads. Because he’s very gifted.

I expected his games to highlight flaws. I didn’t see that.

time for you to become a pro scout.

Ah, not sure me résumé would generate many callbacks but I’ll look into it.

There's a difference between rooting for Allen to be good or even great (which I think every Bills' fan is doing) and being convinced that he will based on what he has shown.  We'll all have to wait and see what the outcome is beginning next weekend.

Thanks for this. This is how I feel. I was a Rosen guy in the week leading up to the draft. I really, truly felt that Allen would be a mistake, especially on the Bills, because of the WR/OL situation, and of course, because of Battered Bills Fan Syndrome. When the trade happened, I was so nervous.

When Goodell said "The Buffalo Bills select Josh--" I held my breath and waited for them to not screw it up. And then they did. I felt as though I just received a swift kick in the nuts. I sat in silence with my head in my hands for a good 10 minutes. I was absolutely demoralized by it. Just when I thought maybe the guys in charge were different this time, they did THIS.

That being said, you can see the *tools* Allen has that they fell in love with. The question is whether they have the coaching staff (who knows) and personnel (definitely not right now) to turn those tools into on field production. I think he has a long way to go, and I hope they can prove me wrong. If not? Well, Allen will join the Manuel/Losman bust pile, and McDermott and Beane will be joining Gregg, Jauron, Donahoe etc in the hall of shame

I actually went in the opposite direction.

Didn't hate the pick at first (because I just saw his highlights and some of the awesome throws he can make).

After going back and watching his games I'm pretty concerned.....His decision making and accuracy issues are worse than I thought.

It's projection (based on his tool set which is excellent to anyone with eyes) vs. production which wasn't very good no matter how you slice it.  Classic Boom or Bust prospect.

Yeah and I think my biggest thing is I didn't want the boom or bust guy. I was much more comfortable with Rosen, whose ceiling was probably Matt Ryan, but floor was...I don't know, maybe Sam Bradford (not a great runner + injuries, this was the best I could come up with), as opposed to Allen whose ceiling is something of a Stafford/Big Ben hybrid but his floor is Kyle Boller.

It's not all on these prospects. They need to have the proper coaching, systems, and talent to bring out their best.  Let's hope that Daboll and Culley do their part while Beane continues to build the team that clearly needs more talent on offense for the long haul.

So, we’re back to the “eye test”?

Good to know.
