Pats Penalties That Kept Drives Alive in 2016

Had a little fun. Always feel like as a Bills fan, the Pats drives are always helped by crucial penalties. Here are all of the times the refs kept a drive going JUST on 3rd down, 4th down, or a turnover overturned. After getting halfway through the play-by-plays, I realized I really should've been keeping track of red zone penalties by opponent on any down. It was astounding how many times the Pats were put at the 1 or 2 yard line for an easy in. Also, not all, but a lot of these led to scores.

It would be interesting to compare all teams on drives that were extended by penalties, frequency of each type of penalty, and how/if that translated to points. Same with drives stalled due to offensive penalties.

 

I bet there's at least some correlation to the final score and possibly win/loss records.

But as the previous poster notes, we should compare teams, etc.

 

Do you get you data from prof football reference? Any advice on how to do this efficiently?

I was wondering about this earlier this year, it would also be interesting to look at the other side of the coin and how many drives were killed by penalties. Anecdotally i feel we had an awful lot of first downs and touchdowns called back last year, and watching the SuperBowl penalties both took the falcons out of FG range and then move the Patriots down the field but again this is all anecdotal.

we'll have to do the same for other strong teams last year to see if this was par for the course.

They game plan for it, find ways to hold where the refs can't see, or how to draw penalties. One of the benefits of having everything set on offense and defense, you can look and push for greater advantage elsewhere.

One way to fix it is to start suspending players for bad play and penalties. Look through the tape, and if they continually play unsafe or bad football no one wants to watch, they're gone.

That penalty is basically "touching Tom Brady". There is no doubt they get preferential treatment from the refs, we need to be about 14-21 points better than the pats with brady to stand a chance.
