Here's the full list of extra picks for teams: Holy cow, as if Cleveland didn't have enough they get an additional 3rd, 2 4th's, and 5th round pick... Whaley trades away our draft picks, doles out huge contracts, and we continue to lose. Now, while so many teams are gaining resources, we continue to languish without much good news in sight. The three seasons that have followed full Whaley off seasons we are exactly .500. Good enough? No. Improvement? Yes. Clock running out on him finding a Quarterback? Without question. I honestly believe he has.finding good cheap players like z brown and alexander are the reason we didnt get any comp picks this year but i guess that is a failure by whaley, maybe he should have let go of glenn and incognito and we could have got some to please some fans. We will probably lose gilmore, woods, and atleast one of zb or alexander which should get us some good comp picks next year but im sure the same people crying about picks now will cry about how we dont keep our good players. There is a correlation between having a front office that understands how to build a football team and having sustained success. Draft picks are the lifeblood of a franchise, and Doug "Win Now" Whaley simply does not understand this. The list of teams that have received the most compensatory picks since 1994 is pretty similar to the list of the best teams in football since 1994: The Ravens have received the most compensatory picks, and theyve won two Super Bowls. The Packers have received the second-most, and theyve also won two Super Bowls. The Patriots are fourth, and theyve won five Super Bowls. The 10 teams that have had the most compensatory picks have won most of the Super Bowls since 1994, with a total of 14 titles for those 10 teams. At the other end of the spectrum, the teams that dont receive a lot of compensatory picks tend to be bad teams: There are 14 teams that have received fewer than 20 compensatory picks since the system started in 1994, and those 14 teams have won a combined two Super Bowls. Compensatory picks have turned out to reward smart teams. The teams that have been wise about not over-spending in free agency and keeping themselves in good salary cap shape are the ones that keep getting lots of compensatory picks, while the teams that overspend in free agency are the ones that dont receive compensatory picks. As a result, the consistently good teams tend to be the teams that consistently get a lot of compensatory picks. And the teams that consistently try to spend themselves out of last place are the ones that dont get a lot of compensatory picks. If you can only bat .300, how do you get more hits? You have to get more at-bats. I think Doug Whaley is the worst more than anybody, but causality seems to be at play here. Remember some of the gems we wasted picks on trading up before in the past losman mccargo denney. Lots of people used to complain when we would let our own good players go in the past, now we keep alot of them and people blame whaley. Podesta is way smarter than many NFL GMs. Draft picks are a means to an end. They are not in and of themselves a measure of success. What matters is how you use them. I think Doug Whaley is the worst more than anybody, but causality seems to be at play here. The lack of compensatory picks is an indication that you are not drafting and developing a lot of frontline players. That means you aren't going to lose as many good players in FA AND you willl have to sign other teams' FAs to fill your own holes. Both of those things will result in fewer comp picks. They are good because they have good players and becAuse of the cap you can't keep them all... That is what matters. I do not subscribe to the idea it is just a crapshoot so the more picks the better. Picking the right players is what matters. That is why the Browns with all those picks (and prime picks in rounds 1 and 2) in recent years still suck. They don't evaluate talent well enough or pick the right players.
