boyst Posted October 31, 2016 Author Share Posted October 31, 2016 Howard Stern is the "dad rock" of talk radio. who's doing it better? That's all I want to know. These podcasts just aren't the same. And BTLS isn't as good as he once was... I remember saying to my friends when he announced he was getting divorced from Beth - that this takes away so much of his schtick. Which was that he couldn't bang all these hot celebrity women (that we can all relate to) - because he "couldn't afford to get divorced." Mary was his first wife Nice bit or history re-writing there with Artie. He wasn't fired for some little reason. He was let go because he was a heroin user and tried to kill himself by stabbing his stomach with a knife. Also funny that Artie said "He'll take the high road" after doing no such thing in that piece. And I like Artie--find him hilarious. But what Artie took offense to (leaving the Stern show to a career of mediocrity), he used to say ALL THE TIME about Jackie, who is the poster boy for leaving for less success. And it's obvious that Jackie is who Stern was referencing, not Artie. Stern has been careful for a very long time not to say anything negative about Artie. What Artie did really shook him up. Stern has gone mainstream. Thank god. I don't need 4 hours of fart jokes, mentally and physically challenged people, and canned bits. I listen for an hour a week or so. Enjoy his interviews and news commentary the most. Artie was different than anyone of them. He was mentally illI still listen to Stern. Not as good as the show has been past, but still a good listen. Still the best interviewer in the business, IMO. Recently, just to name a couple, I really enjoyed the Jonah Hill and Tracy Morgan interviews. The TM interview nearly brought tears to my eyes.I stopped and skipped the Jonah hill. Once he started talking about how lucky he was to do this and that with all of these people in the business.. and Howard sucking it up then talking about how awesome he was and this person was. ... the level of high and mighty pompousness was dull. A few observations... - The 45-90 minute "star" interviews are boring beyond belief...and even more boring when they are replayed endlessly the 4 days when Howard isn't live. - When they do "Sternthology", they have thousands of hours of audio to choose from, but they pick 4 bits, and repeat them over and over that week. - When and why did they stop staff from being on the "wrap up" show? It's a bore now. - I'll be honest, if the show everyday consisted of Howard, Sal, Richard, Gary, JD, Fred & Ronnie, and no more celebrity ass kissing interviews, the show would be 100% better. I'm on the fence if I will keep the SIrius subscription. Maybe if they offer me a good deal....I'm not paying the $20 a month rate or whatever it is. The day the new subscription kicked in, no stern channel. I called to cancel, within 20 minutes they gave me the same rate, an extra month and all channels. I think he still has great moments. I thought it got really bad at the tail end of arties time. It became the artie show and i really dont think he is all that funny or entertaining... especially in the state he was in. What he got away with in the 90s gets three blocks of protesters for three weeks today that make delicate radio executives anxious. The big deal about what Trump said on the bus with Bush was PG rated compared to what Stern said and did in the 90s. Artie was great in Jackie's seat but the last couple of years of Artie were horrible -- it was always about Artie and his demons. Artie is 100% sour grapes now and knows he blew it. I've gotten to know more about celebrities I wouldn't have otherwise given two schitts about because of Stern's interviews. You know who IS terrible? Robin. Complete waste of space. While I think Howard has gotten better with time, Robin was 10x better 20 years ago. Howard isn't "pussified" -- he has simply evolved and cares about presenting different things now. The wack pack is still there and crazy as ever. Ronnie is awesome; who doesn't love the creepy sex tips? Sour shoes is a freaking genius. There are still staff fights and plenty of ridiculousness. Yes, the interviews are scheduled, but all guests know coming in that there are no off-limits areas of questioning -- it's why celebs routinely declined Stern show interview requests in the 90s and early 2000s.
