Turkish admiral 'claims asylum in US' after failed coup

Think it's time to jettison the turks.

They're hardly an "ally."

Arm the kurds, boot them out of NATO, and away we go.

My wife went to Istanbul a few years ago and was really bothered by the fact that they had heavily armed (AK-47s?) police all over the place.

She went to dinner at a restaurant that was installed at the "Midnight Express" prison. She was happier than usual to be back in America after that particular overseas trip.

We don't have heavily armed police all over in major cities here?

The state-run Anadolu news agency reported that Erdogan had said the US had to choose between its relationship with

Turkey and Fethullah Gulen, a former Erdogan ally who has been in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania for decades.

Gulen is a moderate Muslim in favor of a secular Turkey , Erdogan wants to make it a religious islamic state.

I hope the U.S. sides with Gulen not the extremists .

The German army (Bundeswehr) has delivered a huge shipment of weapons to Kurdish Peshmerga fighters in Iraq after Germany broke off supplies earlier in the year.

WELCOME TO POST-KEMALIST TURKEY: Turkey seizes assets as post-coup crackdown turns to business.

Turkish authorities ordered the detention of nearly 200 people, including leading businessmen, and seized their assets as an investigation into suspects in last month’s failed military rebellion shifted to the private sector.

President Tayyip Erdogan has vowed to choke off businesses linked to U.S.-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, whom he blames for the July 15 coup attempt, describing his schools, firms and charities as “nests of terrorism.”

Tens of thousands of troops, civil servants, judges and officials have been detained or dismissed in a massive purge that Western allies worry Erdogan is using to crack down on broader dissent, risking stability in the NATO partner.

In dawn raids on Thursday, police from a financial-crimes unit entered some 200 homes and workplaces after a chief prosecutor issued 187 arrest warrants, state-run Anadolu news agency said. TV channel CNN Turk said 60 people were detained.

It wasn’t a failed coup; it’s a successful purge.

US (allegedly) moving nukes from Turkey to Romania:

The US has started transferring more than 20 nuclear weapons from Turkey to Romania, due to the worsening relations between Washington and Ankara, sources told EurActiv.com.

According to one of the two anonymous sources, “the US-Turkey relations had deteriorated so much following the coup that Washington no longer trusted Ankara to host the weapons.”

Thus, the US decided to move the weapons to the Deveselu military base in southern Romania. Deveselu hosts the antimissile defense system Aegis Ashore, which became operational in mid-May this year.

Rushed evacuation of US nukes from Incirlik

In an earthshaking Middle East development, the United States has begun secretly evacuating the tactical nuclear weapons it had stockpiled at the southern Turkish air base of Incirlik and is transporting them to US bases in Romania.
The Obama administration has thus taken another step towards folding its tents in the Middle East.
Russian rapprochement, which Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin sealed in St. Petersburg on Aug.8. Since then, there have been calls for the Russian Air Force to be allowed to displace the US warplanes at Incirlik. This process has now begun
The talks ground to a halt over Turkish insistence on assuming control of the nuclear arsenal and America’s rejection of this demand.

So, US nukes out, Russian Air Force in.

Turkey leaving NATO can't be too far behind, right?

Um...holy ****.

Earth-shaking may be an understatement. I'm having a hard time thinking of a geo-political alignment as huge in the past several centuries. Maybe US involvement in World War 1.

This is the goal of several hundred years of Russian foreign policy. More near-term, it puts immense pressure on the Ukraine, South-Eastern Europe, and the Gulf States.
