Lots of rumors going around about an attempted military coup of Turkey. Erdogan is out too sea on vacation from what I can make of it, so good timing? Would this be a good thing for U.S. relations?

VERY good thing. Get rid of an islamist in the region.

It could be a great thing, considering Turkey is part of the problem when it comes to fighting ISIS... but it depends on who takes over of course.

Yeah of course from what I have read all the press releases have been about restoring their democracy and human rights, but it's easy to say good things. Hopefully it is good people doing a good thing. I have heard and read about Erdogan but I'd be playing a fool if I tried to gauge the impact something like this would have. I wonder what the U.S. bases look like down there right now.

Rumors are it's to install this man, currently in exile in the US. So, what are the odds we're backing this thing?

Erdogan is one of the biggest enemies in the region if you're a fan of democracy and individual freedoms.

But he is / was (?) backed by the west which made him untouchable.

Whoever takes over, Turkey will still be part of the problem. The problem is the whole region is a patchwork of shifting allegiances that make Game of Thrones look linear and straightforward. Turkey will still be a contributor to that snake pit no matter who's in charge.

More than likely that's true.

I'm more interested in who's backing it. Could be us. Could be Russia. Could be both(?)... nah...

So who's backing the coup?

Keeping in mind Russia's recent Black Sea/Eastern Med interests, and the incursions by Russian forces in Syria into Turkish territory. I wouldn't be surprised if Putin had a hand in this...on the other hand, whether he did or not, I'd be very surprised if he didn't manipulate the situation to his advantage before our leadership manages to get off the back nine...

Beat me to it. I doubt it's us, because this administration tends to do this clumsily and at arm's length by proxy (e.g. Libya.) "Direct" and "subtle" are not in this administration's vocabulary.

Yup. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out. Especially considering the amount of nukes on US bases in the region.

I wonder what the contingency plan is when a US nuclear facility is about to be over-run. Launch them into the sea?

No...

But I am very curious to see what is going on and who is in charge of turkey right now. Not sure if it will be better or worse for relations, erdogen was a loose cannon and flirting with more and more theocratic rule

Hey, maybe it's ISIS... :bag:

Incirlik (where they keep the nukes in Turkey) is on alert. Not that there's much there - a dozen A-10s and some UAVs. Don't even know why we keep nukes there anymore...probably bureaucratic inertia.

They have ways of disabling the weapons. I don't remember what though - I'll try looking it up when I get home.

Both sides are reporting that they beat the other.

I can't recall a coup where that didn't happen.
