Nice article.

Steelers always seem to make safe first round picks (interior linemen, Linebackers and D-linemen that fit their scheme, etc). I think that's a wise move, especially when you are picking so late.

yes and they recently have loved players from OSU. Holmes, Adams, Heyward, Shazier. I think they even took the kid who played there from SFHS - Doug Worthington. That may change with LeBeau gone.

Another interesting note on Colbert knowing the value of players. While he did trade up for Santonio Holmes, he also ditched him after violating the substance abuse policy - traded to Jets for a 5th round pick. Colbert then flipped that pick to Arizona - getting back a corner they previously drafted in the second round (Bryant McFadden) and a sixth round pick which was used to draft Antonio Brown. Arizona used that pick to take John Skelton.

Meanwhile, the Jets seem to like dealing away lower-round picks for proven vet receivers to mixed results (thinking of Holmes and Harvin). Wonder how Marshall will pan out.

The Bills have done a significantly better job at finding players in later rounds since 2011, I attribute most of that to Whaley.

Eh, I feel like here and there, in the recent past, we've done okay picking late rounds, as our roster was so easy to crack from a lack of talent perspective. Stevie, a 7th rounder, hung around on the roster for like 3 years before he even had his breakout season in 2010. There a few other examples...

But yes, I do trust Whaley to make more Seantrel Henderson picks than Tank Carder picks.

Makes sense. In general, when a team is perennially competitive (the winners circle), they have fewer glaring needs that good coaches/schemes can't hide to an extent. Perennially bad teams are always "chasing it", and more often than not, whiffing out. Winning solves many problems....
