Guys like Easley, Dean, Sanborn, Gay, Schmidt, Carpenter and Thigpen were all active on gameday to play just special teams. That's why they were good last year. I am confident in saying that NO other team in the NFL dressed 7 guys just to play ST. You could easily cut that number to 5 (Dean and Gay) and have a place for guys that can do one thing well (Ie Goodwin). His impact will be greater than that of Larry Dean -agreed?

True, I think that's a pretty good point, but I guess I was thinking that if Goodwin isn't playing ST, then as a guy who is only in there for 10 plays isn't doing a whole lot on offense OR special teams. But I get that he might be worth it if only for the deep threat. Bear in mind, I like the guy a lot, and want to see him more involved in the offense.

I only bring up the ST point b/c Crossman went from a bum to a genius in one year in some people's minds. The reality is that the Bills threw TONS of resources at ST (don't forget Graham and Dixon). If you trimmed it just a little (someone like Dean) you could still have really good ST. What is the dropoff of Dean to Randell Johnson (for example) on ST? I would say that it is minimal. If that little dropoff is all that you need to sacrifice to have the threat of Goodwin a couple of times a game, I am all for it. Edited by Kirby Jackson

I can't believe people even still think about Goodwin. He is a complete non factor and it really doesn't matter if he is on the team or not.

Is that you St. Doug?

Just because an inept offensive coaching staff rendered him useless doesn't mean that he is. He is a specialist. If used as such he can help the team.

Keep him and only put him in for hail mary plays

CBF

and run them each quarter

Thats where I sort of disagree. He has more use on gameday than Larry Dean for example. If he makes 10 big plays this year between catches or long flags he's been a big help.

good take KJ.

I would bet he might or maybe been misused a little the last couple years ? when on the filed of course...

I'd like to see what Goodwin can do in an actual NFL offense.

good lord Man!

you might be onto something?!

Goodwin fan here too. When he's on the field or thrown to the kid makes plays.

Yeah, I'm not too confident that he will remain healthy but if used strictly for that he shouldn't take too many hits. In addition, he can pull the safeties away from the line of scrimmage and open up the running game some. Even as a decoy running deep he has some value. He doesn't need many targets to make a big impact. Just don't throw him bubble screens and crossing routes where he could get killed. You have Sammy to run those if you are looking for someone to take a slant 80 yards. Goodwin should be just used over the top IMO. Edited by Kirby Jackson

If teams can respect the threat...

Well, in theory having a decoy sounds nice, but it really doesn't work. We had had a decoy for years (evans) and we had horrible offenses at the same time. At some point, you have to be able to capitalize on the threat on a consistent basis. Otherwise, you are just putting one guy on the field who really isn't very useful. I would rather just have a good receiver on the field who is actually a useful option. This take the top off crap is so overblown. Name one team that has this decoy that gets a few catches a year and still has a great offense?

Last year we had 7 players active strictly to play ST. That was definitely the most in the league. What is the dropoff on ST from Larry Dean to Randell Johnson? That difference is all that you have to sacrifice in order to play Goodwin.

I really don't understand what you are saying. Decoys suck. Just get players that can make plays consistently. I really also don't care about special teams so i'm not sure I get your point. A reliable kicker is pretty much all I care about there.

I wanted an example of a successful decoy situation. Convince me that decoys are the bomb.

Goodwin is always one crisp shot from being on IR. Love his speed, but he is a liability, and you can't coach durability.I say he gets cut in preseason.

The Bills could bench someone like Larry Dean who was just used to play ST in favor of dressing Goodwin. You would play Goodwin 10 snaps a game and throw him 2 deep balls a game. Between pass interference and catches he will in all likelihood make 10 big plays this year. That is a much bigger impact on the outcome of games than Larry Dean's ST contributions. Instead of using Dean on ST you would just use someone else in his place. Do you follow? Edited by Kirby Jackson

yes, but will he survive the other 8 plays he's out there?
