Need recommendations about backing up data on home computer

Recommended Posts

I really don't follow all of the latest trends in computing, so I figure that all of you tech nerds :P on this board could give suggestions.

Right now, I have 2-2 TB external drives.

Every week, I run a full backup on our two home computers. I then take one of the drives to the bank (to my safe deposit box) and leave it there. I then take the other drive from the safe deposit box back to the house. So, if anything catastrophic were to happen, I would always have data available that's only 1-2 weeks old.

With all of the changes in technology that have taken place, i was wondering whether there are any other ways to do this. (easier, more secure, etc.)

Using something like Google Docs, DropBox, or something else might be worthwhile to look in to for basic backing up of files. They are free but also allow for upgrades to increase network size.

There is also Carbonite www.carbonite.com

My choice is to use a network connected drive to back up all data. I have a pretty fancy, forgot the numbers, NetGear. I have a large HDD type backup there. It is accessible from any internet connected computer and I can use my tablet or phone to access it. If I am somewhere and bored I can pull up a movie from my home drive and watch it on my phone. I also have a non-networked drive I back up from time to time. I also backup all important documents and information on Google Drive, my Droid Smart Phone, and email them to myself.

Usually I do not end up with having to back up much from my computer. It has a terabyte on it, and it's nearly 90% full. But, I do not back up my porn...so I only have 4kb of worthwhile data.

If it's homemade porn, you should back it up, there are some websites out there you can use specifically for it, like xvideo, youporn, redtube. Don't worry, no one will see it......

Heathen.

I don't understand why anyone would even save porn. There is more then enough out there....

You sound like you're doing better than most. If you're looking for something easier, you might want to try an automatic backup using a cloud service.

http://www.thetop10b...om/cloud-backup

Is that easier than your current procedure - - probably yes

Is it more secure - - seems pretty unlikely (although depending on what data you have, it might be secure enough for your purposes)

So think about which is more important to you.

I am not a techie so I went for simple. Sound like you are running a home based business to go to the trouble of running a drive to the bank. Apple makes or deploys a tool that will automatically schedule backups. If you are running a business you may also want to look into the option of storage offsite over a secure network. There are services available.

I have an external hard drive and use carbonite (unlimited data plan). It works in the background and gives me peace of mind in the event my computer crashes, gets stolen, etc. I have never had to download lost data from carbonite but it does take forever to upload pics and movie clips to carbonite.

You're WAY ahead of me. I cant even figure out how to back up my PC. People give me advice, but I can't even figure out the instructions.

But I can plan some amazing Bills "away game" parties so I guess we all have our strengths and weaknesses!!
