Odd places you've met players

Recommended Posts

Had a very unexpected encounter this weekend, and thought I'd share and see who's got their own weird tales to tell.

I spent the last weekend working a festival in Delaware. While walking across the stage during one band's set, someone stops me, looks at my hat (wearing a Bills hat), and asks if I'm from Buffalo. I told him I was from Rochester, but my family is from Buffalo and I'm a big Bills fan. He gives me a big smile, shakes my hand, gives me his card, and introduces himself as Tony - as in Tony King.

Maybe not a huge name in terms of the Bills' history, but I thought that was pretty cool (and entirely unexpected). You never know who you'll bump into!

Who have you run into out of the blue? Did they spot you, or did you spot them?

Met Bruce Smith at the Dallas airport. He was running and I called out "Hey Bruce!" He looked back and said "Have you seen Thurman Thomas?" Apparently he was supposed to meet him there. Made me laugh.

I saw Hulk Hogan at dallas airport circa 1985. HOLY S.Im not a small guy....but Hulk was 6 inches taller and musta outweighed me by 90 pounds.-At that time looked like he had a 34 inch waist---awe inspiring.

Joe Ferguson, at what we then called a "gas station," pumping gas as I did the same;

O.J. Simpson at Lockport Memorial Hospital, where he often visited kids who were there;

Jim Haslett at a (great) bar in Middleport called "Mr. Ed's";

Steve Tasker at "The Chapel," a (great) church in Amherst;

Steve Christie at the Walker Center (?) plaza in Wiliamsville.

Except for Haslett (who had a pronounced edge at the time) they were all gentlemen when I met them. Years later I met Haslett at a U.B. track meet and he (at least 50 pounds lighter, for whatever reason) was a gentleman as well.

Saw OJ Simpson at a restaurant called the Dill Pickle on Delaware Ave ages ago. Also met Ken Griffey Sr. who sat next to my table at Chi Chi's about 30 years ago. OJ was bombed. Griffey was extremely pleasant.

My buddy recently was at the Seneca Casino and was playing next to a chick. They started chatting and then all the sudden Thurman Thomas sat down next to them and he suddenly realized it was his wife he was chatting with. He had hung out with them for a while. He Didnt really bring up football too much and Didnt ask for a picture or an autograph, just assumed that Thurman enjoyed the relaxed feel to it.

As far as me, I've got a couple.

Right after we picked up Lawyer Milloy, friends and I were downtown. I was on my way to the bathroom to throw up (was really hammered) and noticed a guy practically tongue raping this girl. Being very pushy and it Didnt seem like she was having any of it. Just so happened it was Milloy and my friends had to drag me out of the bar because I wanted to fight him.

When I lived in Vegas, Randall Cunningham and Steven Jackson used to enter my bar on a regular basis. I've got an official NFL ball that was autographed by Steven Jackson. One of the nicest players I've ever met.

Oh, almost forgot. I used to deliver pizza for Johns Pizza on Campbell and N French. Jim Kelly's brother just happened to live around the corner in French Landings. I lived in the area and always knew it was his house. In fact I used to go through all those houses when I was a kid, when they were building them. You'd be amazed at all the packs of cigarettes and cans of beer left behind by construction crews. Anyway, we had a delivery to his house. Was around noon ish. Jim answered the door. Looked absolutely ripped from the night before. His hair was all over the place, was chilling in sweats and a tee shirt. Must have had a big night out with his brother all coked up or something.

I had a close friend who worked at Roswell in the 70s. OJ used to sneak in there unnoticed OFTEN and visit kids.-....Isnt Life strange??

The day before the season opener two years ago (alumni weekend), I ran into Cornelius Bennett at a bookstore in the Atlanta airport. Turns out he was on his way to the opener also. He was very nice and smiled as I explained to my son what an incredible player he was.
