I think he was cut because he never looked like he could be a starter or good backup at safety or LB. You want to at least have that possibility with the ST, because there are only 53 roster spots. D-line are maulers, LBs really laid the wood last night, and when Cutler was able to complete a pass the DBs generally stopped the receiver in his tracks. I really like what they did last night. To bench him would have been an admission of failure.
