In the wake of Young's hiring college scout Matt Hand has been reassigned to the west coast and will be responsible for schools in Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington.

The Bills also announced the addition of Tim Atkins as a football operations assistant replacing Pete Harris, who assumed a new role as scouting assistant.

Why do the Bills continue to waste money scouting players out west when they should be using that money to scout high school players down south?

Where's ICanSleepWhenI'mDead when you need him?

GO BILLS!!!

Maybe a bit. They added a career coach and named him a scout.

Breaking your chops some.

 thanks. Next time instead of listing only his current position and his previous one I'll make sure to get the entire resume in there.

Actually, it was more of a dig at the FO--are there no more actual scouts they could hire?

Typically in the old days, most of the time teams hired experienced coaches to be their scouts, as over their careers they'd seen what it takes to be a solid insert-position-here. Not a big deal. If you look at most scouts experience, prior to being scouts they were coaches for a while.

Good. With Young's ties to the old Big 12, Bills will look at those players differently

and draft more.

Aren't most scouts these days still former coaches? Is there an NFL scout school/major?

Oh sure I remember this guy. Not the brightest guy in the world, in fact pretty poor high school student. Always used to get into trouble with his friend Cockroach. One of the more notable things he did was when his girlfriend Justine dumped him, he sang her an impassioned version of a song he wrote for her, appropriately titled, "Justine." Sounds like he's made a good career for himself.

Be that as it may, our scouting has been crappy for years. Wouldn't you want all scouts who have some experience and success as.....scouts?

Depends. What did we have before? Were they all or mostly former coaches? Or were they career personnel guys?

Some (particularly the ESPN variety) are former college players turned analyst/scout, but yeah it's still the case...

I don't know that the espn variety qualify as scouts.

In theory, all coaches are scouting their own players, and opponents weekly. Different lifestyle with travel, less teaching but not thaaaaat different.

I disagree based on the fact that we got so much talent out of late draft rounds and undrafted players. I think the evaluation of the scouting information and subsequent actions in higher drafts rounds have been crap.
