Please...the dude was an all-pro including 17 sacks in 12 games one year... Boz did comparatively nothing in comparison... Now, whether he will regain his old form or not is questionable(doubtful in my opinion), but to say his first few years were "decent" is a joke... But it's definitely worth a shot. One thing that is odd about all of this is Chan Gailey's response in the afternoon pres conference. According to Joe Buscaglia, Gailey didn't recall coaching against Merriman when he was at Georgia Tech and Merriman was at Maryland. Gailey thought he was already gone by the time he took over at GT, although their respective tenures overlapped from 2002-05, and Merriman was pretty effective against the Yellow Jackets. "a couple decent years". Try all pro every year from your rookie year until a major knee injury you try to play through (dumbly) instead of getting surgery early, and some other related injuries coming back from that. He is 26, and when he gets healthy will be very good for some team. I doubt that will be this year and that the team will be the Bills, but right now he is better than what we have, and if he does well we can trade him to a contender or just enjoy the part year performance. Marcus Jones and Jason Gildon were both brought in for tryouts during training camp but didn't make the roster. They were both touted as being the potential pass rush specialists to push our defense over the top but were bogged down by persistent injuries and were out of the league soon thereafter. A better LB than the current Bills roster is a pretty low bar and since Merrimen must pass a physical before he is cut the answer is YES. The other issue which goes along with the straight player assessment is team building so his personality at least needs to be acceptable (this is why you do not pick-up Moss unless he makes a playoff difference for your team or if having him around interferes with the development of a youngster (unfortunately not a prob for us). 2/ Can your owner and the salary cap of your affod this? Was Merriman that highly-regard at Maryland? I really don't know, but since Gailey has forgotten more football than we can all remember combined, then I wouldn't be surprised if he simply didn't recall coaching against him.
