I hate Marv Levy

I thought Lil Donte was very shaky in coverage as usual. Still extremely inconsistent.

Considering he has sideline to sideline responsibility, shifting between SS and FS behind the likes of Stroud and 4 bartenders at LB, I think you are being hard on him.

I hate him for everything he did to this franchise. He was out-coached in all four Super Bowl games. He hired the undead to be the HC. Watching Ngata destroy the Jets offensive line and remembering how poorly and dirty Whitner played yesterday makes my head feel like it is going to explode. Don't tell me he was a figure head. He was in charge. The fact that he is now no where to be seen suggests he probably had the beginning stages of dementia and is probably gumming his food right now. Remember when Ralph had to tell him he couldn't be the GM and head coach. All the failed FA signings and wasted draft picks on trading up to get players no one wanted in the first place. I truly believe his name should be taken down off the wall until the Bills make the playoffs again. His tenure needs to be exorcised just like the Bartman ball needed to be blown up. His name should be pulled off the wall followed by a moment of silence and a joyous rebirth.

Look, the word "hate" is a little strong and I agree with everyone who points out that the blame is entirely with the owner. Other than an amazingly talented team put together by Bill Polian and maintained by John Butler (and maybe a couple of decent years under Chuck Knox), this franchise has been a joke since the AFL-NFL merger.

That all being said, and this pains me to say it, was Marv really that good as a coach? I give him all the credit for motivating his teams to come back from the Super Bowl losses to make another run. I remember how discouraging it felt after each loss and how resilient those teams were to battle back to the big dance. Nonetheless, it always seemed as though his criteria to be a coach was based on his endless repertoire of military history quotes. In all my years as a fan I never remember him discussing the Xs and Os or just about anything from the game itself. Plus, he had an offensive wiz in Ted Marchibroda as his OC and a quarterback who could run the offense. And yes, he was wildly outcoached in all four Super Bowls.

I grew up with Marv Levy and idolized the guy, but after his disastrous tenure as GM I don't think it's unfair to take a second look at his entire career with the team.

Marv was a mediocre coach. He had a great offensive coordinator in Marchibroda, and a lousy defensive coordinator in Corey. He had the benefit of a virtual all star team during his tenure but he couldn't win the big one. His greatest talent seems to have been assuaging egos. As a GM he sucked royally. His reaches with Whitner and McCargo have proven not justified. He gave big money to Derrick Dockery and Langston Walker( a couple of wastes), extended Kelsay for big money(another waste), drafted Edwards, drafted Lynch( after spouting about how he only wanted "character" guys, and worst of all, hired Jauron(who further stunk up this franchise). I don't hate him, but I don't praise him either, Hall of Famer, or not.

If that really is you Marv (Hey, ya never know!), please excuse this idiotic post. You may have made some mistakes as gm, but you were a great coach. No one will ever bring a team to 4 straight superbowls. We would have won the first one if not for a handfull of plays(can't just blame norwood imo) So please excuse this guy for being an azz as he is just a passionate bills fan who wants to win.

Thanks for the support guys. Look, I told Jimbo not to run it on that last possession 3rd down vs the Giants in SB25! He didn't listen to me while in the K-Gun and it cost us because it was a 47 yarder for Scott. Not a chip shot boys! Damn, we shoulda won it.

Fixed. He's consistently Lil Donte which means he's still taking bad angles, jumping on piles after the player is down, getting beat in coverage, pounding his chest after he makes a tackle 15 yards downfield and tackling with his head down. The only thing that he was missing from his M.O. was an on field Tweet.

Levy really set this franchise behind when he became GM. Picked a horrible head coach and his draft classes were failures. It all started when he picked a saftey as the 6th overall pick...please. :wallbash:

If what you say is true, then the real blame belongs to RW. Levy didn't just show up one day unannounced and move into an office; Wilson hired him.

What evidence do you have that he was a figurehead? Most people think RW is a cheap bastard. Why would he pay Levy to just be a figurehead. He obviously picked the HC. Why would he not have had final say over other areas. Maybe DJ's authority grew over time but Marv is the one to blame for this mess.

Here's more evidence that Marv was nothing but a figurehead........Mark Gaughan write all this in his Friday Q&A, and Marv is not even mentioned once. Modrak was making the picks during that time:

Question: Given the alarming number of high draft picks who have become busts or average at best, many Bills fans have asked how Tom Modrak keeps his job evaluating college players and influencing the draft. No one seems to have the answer. Do you? Bob Shedlock, Scio.

Answer: Modrak's influence has significantly diminished with the hiring of Buddy Nix as general manager. Assistant GM Doug Whaley oversees all pro scouting and assists Nix in the overall football operation. Nix pulls the names off the draft board. Nix also hired long-time associate Darrell Moody as the Bills' scout in the Southeast, the most important region of the country. Modrak still holds the title of vice president of college scouting and still scouts nationwide.

Bills owner Ralph Wilson likes and respects Modrak and essentially has given him a pass on the Bills' bottom-line results. Former GM Tom Donahoe was the man pulling the names off the draft board from 2001 through 2005, and Wilson holds him largely responsible for the results from that period. After that, Modrak pulled the names off the board, but he wasn't as much of a "definitive voice," if you will, that Donahoe was and Nix is. Former coach Dick Jauron, for instance, was the deciding voice on the Aaron Maybin pick.

There's no question the Bills underestimated Marshawn Lynch's off-field red flags before the draft. The scouting department whiffed on James Hardy. Why Donte Whitner (a productive player) over Haloti Ngata (a great player)? I can't blame that one on Modrak. Jauron and his staff did not want Ngata and insisted he did not fit the scheme. It doesn't help the scouting record, either, when you have five different head coaches over 11 seasons. Bottom line: It's entirely Wilson's fault that he didn't have a definitive football personnel chief succeed Donahoe.

I love Marv like I love one of my own grandparents. You should be smacked repeatedly for not appreciating all of the joy he was in part responsible for bringing us in the late 80s' / early to mid 90s'. Why don't you go kick you dog for a while instead of posting asinine commentary.

I have two cats.

I love my grandparents as well but wouldn't want them in charge of their own finances let along a multi-million dollar company.

Unless CJ turns out to be the living incarnation of Gayle Sayers, his first draft was a failure. It failed to address any and all of the most pressing needs this team had. BPA will be proven yet again as a failed philosopy.

BPA a failed philosophy?

Sure lets reach for needs so we can get the next John McCargo.

Marv's legacy includes coaching for over 50 years, going to 4 SBs, graduating Harvard, NFL Hofer, and being one of the classiest individuals ever in pro football.

The original poster's legacy includes making jokes about Tony Dungy's son committing suicide. I hate you and you're a piece of trash who adds nothing.

the even wilder part of the whitner pick was there were only 5 safeties taken in the draft that year and the best one that was taken was the last one that was taken in the 6TH round by Bill Polian when he picked Antoine Bethea for the colts. If there are only 5 of one particular position worth taking in the draft why the hell would you go for one so early when it was obvious that the safety class couldn't have been that great that year. The Bethea pick shows they could have waited.

The Marv apologists all said that the Bills absolutely needed a safety, in particular Lil Donte, and they couldn't trade down either because the Lions/Ravens/Rams/[insert team] were going to draft him.

Really? No wonder he hasn't replied to any of my posts that have facts in them that Marv wasn't making the calls.

Unfortunately, Marv was not a "fine" coach. He was a overrated babysitter for a sickly talented team that Bill Polian put together. He was outcoached in all 4 Super Bowls and he made absolutely horrible descisions as a GM. He has some of the worst stats of coaches in the HOF. The other coaches that have not made it have rediculously high winning percentages. Marv doesn't have either. I'm not coming back to this post to justify what I wrote so don't bother to argue with me about it. Have fun with your beloved coach and GM and remember everytime we play horrible, or everytime Whitner misses a tackle, or everytime Poz gets injured, or everytime Lynch runs down another pedestrian, or everytime Trance Checkwards starts a football game, it's all because of your beloved Marv Levy.

Most retarded post of the year 1-A. Too bad you won't be around to collect your accolades.

Blame the frickin guy who hired him.... and then again the same guy refused to hire a real GM after Marv Levy stepped down and let skeletor run rampant doing anything he wanted, like cutting O linemen and firing the OC two weeks before the opener

Unless I'm wrong the owner ASKED Marv Levy for help fully knowing he was never a GM in the NFL! What would you do when someone asks you to help them out? Marv really wanted to coach again but that wasn't allowed, I think he did his best considering

so take your miss placed hate and go kick your dog as usual

Everything currently wrong with this team stops at the very top and always has.... he fired Bill Polian! fired John Butler! fired Wade Phillips! refused to pay Chuck Knox!

This is typical of Buffalo Bills fans that are so delusional that they blame everyone but the guy solely responsible...

Butler was just the recipient of Polians well built team. Wade will be getting fired again soon. (He has a good football last name and otherwise looks clueless out there) Polian... oh my. We'd be on our second franchise QB after Kelly by now.

Let's not forget, Wade also has a lovely daughter...

Aside from that, a quick note to the original poster of this thread...
