porter and thomas likely to be cut

Recommended Posts

i really like Porter, and I think he has something to prove. But I wonder what the relationship between him and George Edwards is, since he is really unhappy with Miami because he wasn't getting playing time, and felt he deserved it.

What does he have to prove?

Porter has two seasons left in the tank, and next year, at least statistically, will prove to be one of is best b/c he wants to show the Fins and the entire NFL that he's still an elite player. He's definitely an energizer and would bring some nastiness to our defense; however, with all of that said, I find it highly unlikely he'll land in Buffalo. My guess is that he'll wind up with a contender that already has a decent defense.

Why only 2 seasons left? Does he have an expiration date stamped on his forehead? Why do you say this? He's still fairly young.

pft is reporting both joey porter and adulius thomas are going to be cut soon. i think both would bring the attitude we are looking for the defense to have..

If the Pats are cutting Thomas, it's because he's past his prime. Haven't we learned that yet with Milloy and Bledsoe? Let's build with the draft.

yea, my point is i want our defense to have an edge, an identity. for once i would like to see a team from buffalo have the nastiness, toughness, that goes with the town. the sabres are pussies, the bills have no identity. just once i would like to hear the rest of football acknowledge the toughness of the bills in some form.

two good seasons... he's going to be 33 when the season begins. And after 35, I find it hard to believe he's going to be posting good sack numbers b/c he will probably be lacking the speed.

Milloy was still a decent safety when we acquired him. Just because the Pats cut a guy doesn't mean they can't still be more productive than what we currently have on our roster. Would you not take Adam Vinatieri after they cut him? How about Seymour after they traded him? The Pats make a lot of ballsy roster decisions that sometimes result in good players getting the axe.

Man, time flies. I didn't realize he's been around this long.

those guys and wilfork will give us a sick 34 and let us draft TE/WR and LT in the first 2 (obv LT being top slot). that would be huge. porter and maybin/aaron shoble on the outside, and thomas and poz in the middle, w williams and stroud at DE and vince in the gut would be just beastly

Yeah, Milloy was decent. So was Bledsoe. But not as good as what the Pats replaced them with. Using your logic, we'll always be less then the Pats. I'm just saying let's build without the Pats strategic cuts. They'll likely have little milage left and cost us too much when we should be building with young legs.

I am sure there is a reason Joey Porter was riding the bench last year. Perhaps his notoriously bad attitude and me first perspective? George Edwards was his linebackers coach - no chance he ends up in Buffalo and that is a good thing. I would be more inclined to take a chance on Thomas as a reserve/pass rush specialist in the 3-4 alignment. He only started 11 games last year and only had 34 total tackles and 3 sacks - clearly no longer a dominent force or every down player. It would make sense for the Patriots to cut him given the big contract he signed. For a reasonable price he would bring some veteran leadership and knowledge of the 3-4 defense.

Very good point.

However if we switch to 3-4 defense, having a veteran or 2 that is used to playing in 3-4 could cut down the learning curve for rest of team on the switch. Its not an easy defense to master if haven't played in it before, so having someone like Thomas could benefit the players around him

Dang, I though you were talking about the dude that intercepted that pass yesterday and Pierre Thomas! Pick them both up.

I might take Joey Porter though. Won a SB. Edgy. The week prior to SB XL he said Jeremy Stevens was soft and I'll be darned if he wasn't right. Let him play a lot.

Porter was out played in Miami by Channing Crowder, and he doesn't like being the #2 LB on the team.I think he could make an impact to the extent of what Takeo did when he was on the team. As for Thomas i dont know much about him, I would rather save the money and get someone in the draft.
